Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

A former coworker (and fellow weird concert-goer) started a company that does custom mouthpieces, mainly for sax so far. Really high-tech/science stuff (she has a PhD in instrumental acoustics). It seems to be working (both the company and the mouthpieces)

Anyone out there remember Marian McPartland's radio show Piano Jazz on NPR? She invited artists to come to her broadcast to chat, spin records, and occasionally jam. Music For a Free World is covering some historic territory here.

Cecil Taylor appeared on her show back in '94. They didn't play together, but she gamely accompanied (on piano) his reading of a poem. You get that "anything could happen" thrill listening to Music For a Free World.
