This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello!
Avatar 6:55pm Flash Strap:

hello explorers, what a perfect spring evening this, let's pump some music into it
Avatar 6:55pm Flash Strap:

hi there chresti!
Avatar 7:02pm hyde:

hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Dolphy in my birthyear...
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! Hi Rev Rab!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

god, i love this performance
Avatar 7:07pm Little Danny:

Hey Evan, hey all
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Hey LD!
Avatar 7:07pm northguineahills:

I need more Dolphy! Existing on grad levels of sleep I was getting almost 20 years ago, but not by choice, circadian rhythms have been tre effed.
Avatar 7:08pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH! buddy i hope you get some restorative sleep soon
Avatar 7:10pm Flash Strap:

bass clarinet sounds so good, never better than when Dolphy is handling one
Avatar 7:12pm Little Danny:

I was just about to comment about how much I love Dolphy's bass clarinet
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

@LD: my man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Staggering talent. Died @ 36.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

this whole Charlie Rouse album is just so celebratory, exploding with color
Avatar 7:15pm Little Danny:

It must be a fearsome instrument to play. I can't imagine any other reason why it isn't heard more often in jazz
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

looks like it would be a lot to wrangle and stay nimble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Surprising to me how alike & unlike sax & clarinet are.
Sax is quite easy - but there is a squeak threshold to even get started w/ clarinet...
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

David Murray also plays a mean bass clarinet
Avatar 7:17pm Flash Strap:

as much as anything, i always come back to this McPartland LP because it has s u c h an appealing cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm passiflora:

need this, great title
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

@hyde: yes he does
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:18pm chresti:

A box of pastels
Avatar 7:19pm Little Danny:

Any albums come to mind for Murray's bass clarinet playing, hyde? I genuinely love the instrument
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

hello and warm welcome passiflora!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm chresti:

Me too@LD
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

i know he did a whole album of bass clarinet ballads
  7:22pm Dean:

Bass clarinet features on the Dark Star and Trane tributes, too, but I forget on which tracks.
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean!
  7:23pm Dean:

I played bass clarinet in junior high, after the then-graduated 8th grade bass clarinetist vacated the seat. I'd been playing tenor sax and clarinet. I was equally dreadful on all three reeds.
Avatar 7:24pm hyde:

@LD yeah, there's the album Flash mentions. There's also a great India Navigation record called "Children" that has a couple, if I remember right. And the David Murray Octet plays Trane record has some...
Avatar 7:24pm Little Danny:

Whoa, Dean. An album of Grateful Dead covers. I'm not sure I'll ever be man enough
Avatar 7:25pm Little Danny:

@hyde: thank you! Now googling
  7:25pm Dean:

I swear, when I brought the instrument home the first time, it felt bigger than me.

That Dead covers album might be Murray's best seller, for obvious reasons.
  7:26pm noahb:

speaking of unusual instruments
*Bob freakin' Brookmeyer on valve trombone here*
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

I've never heard it
Avatar 7:27pm Little Danny:

But you kept the bass clarinet, right Dean? Please please please
Avatar 7:27pm Flash Strap:

Hi there Noah B! yeah, man, exactly
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

generally a very nice, very playful take on Flamingo, I think
Avatar 7:30pm Little Danny:

Great segue outta Stan Getz!
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

thanks brother, i hoped it'd be nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So - Quincy Jones ripped this for Austin Powers - or covered it ??
  7:31pm Dean:

Couldn't keep the bass clarinet, because it was the junior high school's, on loan. The only instrument that I owned was the clarinet. It needs serious therapy these days. Ironically, there's a reed and brass repair shop around the corner from me.

The Dark Star album is good, maybe not Murray's best. I suppose half the fun is hearing the Dead through Murray, but if you didn't know the Dead tunes you'd nevertheless enjoy the Murray big ensemble sound.
Avatar 7:32pm Flash Strap:

Quincy's version came out in 1962, they're just doing the world's best cover of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Gotcha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm passiflora:

:O
Avatar 7:36pm northguineahills:

Ok, I dig Collage!
Avatar 7:37pm northguineahills:

and Rev Rabbit beat me to it....
Avatar 7:39pm Little Danny:

Bizarrely, Lasha is pronounced Law-Shay, accent on the second syllable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Appreciate that you'll trouble to dialogue w/ me here to School me. A thing to value, yerknow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm chresti:

much schoolin' to be had here
Avatar 7:44pm northguineahills:

If it helps, Estonian pronunciation is like the love child of Latvian and Finnish.... (probably doesn't help)
Avatar 7:45pm TDK60:

Hello Roomies..
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

who got schooled, by whom?
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Hi TDK!
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

@NGH: very helpful, but in an un-usable way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm fleep:

98% greetings, intrepid folks and Evan
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

hello father fleep!
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

the saxophones are always fantastic on these records
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So kewl. Tight but not uptight...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm chresti:

@Flash, you are the schooler, we are the schooled
Avatar 7:54pm hyde:

this is all totally new to me
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

this first record hews slightly conventional, relatively speaking; their second record really has a fully formed, unique voice and is full of surprises
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

i am just a fellow student who has been given a classroom of my own for some reason
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

Extremely Butch Cassidy sounding here
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

now we're in the second album, for me this record is a true mind-blower
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm chresti:

You're the music monitor
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

I think this madrigal style is maybe the indicator of Runo-Song, very circular
Avatar 8:04pm coelacanth∅:

hello Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

hello and welcome Coelacanth!
Avatar 8:09pm Flash Strap:

when this track emerges on the album, all my hairs are up, a complete moment of startlement and wonder
Avatar 8:09pm Little Danny:

Wow, this is Collage track is incredible!
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

the way that vocal is recorded, linking the folk tradition to a "past" sound, it's incredible
Avatar 8:12pm Little Danny:

Yeah. Really, really neat. This track too! Man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm chresti:

wow, great!
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

this groove almost like a Turkish psych sound
Avatar 8:15pm Little Danny:

There were some other groups from the '60s/'70s Eastern Bloc who also did a cool interpretation of Bossa Nova and the Brazilian vocal harmony sound. Funny phenomenon.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

i may have a few of them cued up for later, depending. something i'd like to know more about
Avatar 8:19pm Little Danny:

Novi Singers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm passiflora:

love the vocals on this laula
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

@LD: No and I checked I think everything i have cued up for later is instrumental
Avatar 8:22pm northguineahills:

yeah, there is a Novi Singers vibe to them....
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

oh wow, i gotta get some Novi Singers records, those look great
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

never heard them, i don't think
Avatar 8:23pm northguineahills:

I forgot this was Soviet era, was wondering why the record label was in Cyrillic, when Estonian uses the Latin alphabet.
Avatar 8:27pm northguineahills:

smooth Eesti sounds!

(I might be napping out in a bit).
Avatar 8:33pm Little Danny:

Man, killer groove on "Raunchy Rita"
Avatar 8:36pm Franco Twinkie:

Hiya Flash. I've taken another sick day to hang with the Thursday crowd.
Avatar 8:37pm Flash Strap:

Franco! sorry you're sick but pleased to count you in our number
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

@LD: it's a real sledgehammer
Avatar 8:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Thanks, I'm gonna try and do some paperwork whilst I groove.
Avatar 8:41pm Flash Strap:

Frank Foster on sax, everybody
Avatar 8:42pm Little Danny:

Foster also recorded "Raunchy Rita" as a soloist in that time. Similarly unstoppable groove
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

is that on Fearless? I need to dig that one up
Avatar 8:45pm Little Danny:

Dunno. I just have the 45 edit
Avatar 8:46pm Flash Strap:

awesome
Avatar 8:47pm hyde:

good stuff
Avatar 8:48pm geezerette:

Avatar 8:55pm geezerette:

Howdy Danny!
Hiya Hyyyyyyyyde!
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

ah, hate to lose ya C., happy hopping
Avatar 8:56pm geezerette:

Bye Coel!
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Tony Williams Lifetime material doesn't always connect with me, sometimes really not at all (tho i can appreciate it) – but certain tracks are just all-time cosmic revelations, and this obviously is one
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Comes a Time, from Ego, also – nothing sounds like that
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

i've never played this track on the show, and tonight i'm taking the liberty
Avatar 9:02pm geezerette:

New to me, Dizzy did psychedelicly tinged music around same time. Can't remember where aside frome Hubley cartoons. Digging!
Avatar 9:03pm Flash Strap:

i think you introduced me to that cartoon, G. - still need to give it a proper watching! really glad of the reminder, i've been sort of saving it
Avatar 9:04pm geezerette:

Oh, great!
Avatar 9:05pm geezerette:

This track has camels in it!
Avatar 9:05pm Little Danny:

Fun factoid: Georgia Hubley, founding member of and drummer for Yo La Tengo, is John Hubley's daughter
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

@G: it looks so incredible. by the way, last week's movie of the week on the Criterion channel blew my mind & is definitely up your alley: Karel Zeman's Baron Munchausen, highest possible recommendation
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

@LD: wild, i had no idea
Avatar 9:06pm geezerette:

Wow, Danny, that's wonderful!
Avatar 9:07pm geezerette:

Evan, I saw that! Totally blew me away!
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

me too, me too
Avatar 9:08pm geezerette:

OMG this is insane! :D
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

total musical eruption
Avatar 9:14pm Flash Strap:

on this beautiful track: Dolphy on bass clarinet and Richard Davis on bass, in rapturous duet
Avatar 9:16pm geezerette:

This is one of the best digs I've ever been on, so much treasure.
Avatar 9:18pm hyde:

apparently Pharaoh Sanders fell down and broke his hip :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm melinda:

hi peoples
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

bad news, hyde! take my strength, Pharoah
Avatar 9:20pm Flash Strap:

hi Melinda!
Avatar 9:21pm hyde:

yay, melinda!
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

@G: smilin' about it
Avatar 9:21pm geezerette:

Hyde, when? Damn.
  9:22pm passiflora:

Avatar 9:22pm geezerette:

Hey Melinda!
Avatar 9:24pm hyde:

@geez i guess it was a few days ago.
Avatar 9:28pm Flash Strap:

that sucks, always worry about hips
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm chresti:

Avatar 9:31pm geezerette:

Evan, segue to Kenton Blew me off my chair!

Hyde, fingers crossed Mr. Sanders heals quickly.

Darin, holy moly!
Avatar 9:32pm hyde:

i need to fade away. good night all, thanks Flash!
Avatar 9:33pm geezerette:

See you, Hyde. :)
  9:38pm Dean:

"Khalid of Space" was working a theme from a popular classical music piece I can't place. Something Holst Planets-ish, but perhaps Russian. Anybody know it?
Avatar 9:39pm geezerette:

I thought it was Caravan.
Avatar 9:40pm geezerette:

...freely interpreted.
  9:41pm Dean:

Oooh, maybe it was, geezerette! I wonder, then, what classical work the allusion invoked for me... (My favorite version of "Caravan," by the way, pays it no respect whatsoever. It is LA punk band Claw Hammer's take.)
Avatar 9:42pm Franco Twinkie:

As we are whisked away on a cloud, good night Flash.
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

good night Hyde! good night Franco, good night all you wonderful explorers
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

though we do have another 15 minutes of music, so it's slowly that i wish you goodnight

Don't say I didn't warn you.
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

Marc Ribot also does an absolutely murderous punkish Caravan
Avatar 9:50pm Franco Twinkie:

I want to eat at this restoraunt. You think house band is still there?
Avatar 9:51pm geezerette:

Thanks guys, love that tune in many versions.
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

i'd settle for just getting to hear the rest of that mysterious release, honestly
Avatar 9:52pm Flash Strap:

I decided to just toss this little beauty in, beautiful estonian pop
  9:52pm Dean:

Claw Hammer is one of those bands that a-l-m-o-s-t made it. A pity they didn't, but owing to that fact I got to see them at a bunch of small venues. They did a mean cover of Devo's first album, too, but their original work was also striking.
Avatar 9:53pm Franco Twinkie:

I'll bet it's a buffet with mysterious shiny things floating in grey sauce.
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

absolutely
  9:56pm Dean:

Could be this place, maybe? They feature live music late at night. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g298484-d13398847-Reviews-Love_Fish_Magadan-Moscow_Central_Russia.html
Avatar 9:56pm geezerette:

Dean, nothing's better than a small club.
Avatar 9:56pm Flash Strap:

Uno Loop is a good name
Avatar 9:56pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I went to a party at one of the guys houses who was in Claw Hammer. I was invited by a guy I new who lived in Prague. Why, I'm not sure.
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

@Dean, you know, it probably is
  9:59pm Dean:

When I was married, now going on 19 years ago, my brother served as best man. In preparation for the requisite speech, he asked me who my heroes were. I remember two of the three: Franz Schubert and Chris Bagarozzi (he of Claw Hammer).
Avatar 9:59pm geezerette:

Thanks Evan, superb show. :)
