Had a Fabio archive on before this, in which you and Fab raided Clay's record bag, finding among other things Queen's first record and Kiss's Love Gun. Clay had had a record duel planned.

Sorry I missed the FXO tribute. He was one of my personal favorites. I'm even more saddened at his loss than I was by X-Ray's, and I was pretty darn saddened by X-Ray's

I've been going on YouTube and checking out all of the Judy Garland clips that Frank used to use for intros, including the version of Get Happy from Little Voice.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:23pm
Julie:

I spent more time hanging out with Frank than I did X-Ray, which I regret (Not enough X-Ray, not enough Frank either). Although I knew X-rays show much better because since I knew Frank he was on so early
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:26pm
Julie:

it is nice that they left us so much. If we want to hear their voices we can. Who knew how important those archives would become
  1:26pm
John from Florham Park:

I really wish the djs on the regular stream would talk more about the web only shows, as a matter of fact what do people here think of WFMU going totally online so that they don’t have to deal with the fcc
  1:27pm
John from Florham Park:

@Julie amen to that
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:27pm
Julie:

it's too hard to stream in your car though, for me anyway
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
Julie:

WPLJ is going away, which is astounding to me, though I don't think it's been iistenable for years.. but in the 70s and 80s lots of PLJ in my house
  1:29pm
John from Florham Park:

@Julie I know just a pipe dream of mine
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
listener james from westwood:

I don't think FMU has any real sense of how many people listen terrestrially. It's tough to imagine how many folks might lose contact if it went all stream.

Yeah, that PLJ news was a stunner. Same period on my side for its being a music staple. (Didn't start listening to FMU until '92.)
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:30pm
Julie:

It does make a difference unfortunately. I heard it's been harder getting bands to do SoundCheck at WNYC now that that show is web only.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
listener james from westwood:

I could see them selling a transmitter/frequency before completely losing the NYC signal. Not needed for the JM listeners above the border anymore. But I'd hate to see any further retreat. I was sick enough when they sold the parking lot.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Phillippe Bastille:

That VU was soooo nice
  1:33pm
John from Florham Park:

@Julie I listened to PLJ when I was in 8th grade in 1979 graduated from WABC:)
  1:35pm
John from Florham Park:

@Listener James I think they do from all the phone calls and pledges they send out and they got a lot of emails too
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
Julie:

yeah I was a little kid. WPLJ and was there a 99X? Then later WLIR.
  1:36pm
John from Florham Park:

@Listener James what does JM mean?
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:36pm

@Phillippe It always blows my mind that voice is Lou Reed
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:37pm

Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 1:58pm

I worry about playing too much 60s stuff, don't wanna sound like WCBS
  1:59pm
Mark R:

"I Think of You" is somehow appropriate on this gloomy Thursday (Almost as dark out as when your old show used to be on!)
  1:59pm
John from Florham Park:

Good point julie
  2:00pm
Mark R:

I think if you play a bunch of 60s stuff one week, that's your prerogative. I'm sure it all evens out in the end.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:00pm

hiya Mark! Good to see you. I thought I saw you're doing some radio soon.

Yes, filling in for Mr. Conklin next Sunday at midnight.

I'm always confused by this band, thinking they are from the 60s or 70s and they are contemporary
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:02pm
Julie:

Terrific!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey Julie and everyone. Don't worry about sounding too "Oldies". Listeners like me will take care of the "demographics"! Thanks for the FXO tribute.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:08pm
listener james from westwood:

Nothin' wrong with 60s stuff! Or the deepest bits of the 70s, for that matter. It all fits. I dig when we go from old Floyd to, say, ONJ and then Psyche Corp. Nowhere else on the dial would we get this. Nowhere else on FMU, either!
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:10pm
Julie:

I love being able to mix things up like that. I really need to explore the 50s more, I never really go there.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 2:11pm

  2:13pm

I can imagine Clay's 80s patter:
Clay: "Do ya play a lot of that Dead or Alive, Jule? Peter Burns holdin' it down. 'You spin me right 'round, Julie, right round, like a record player right round round round!' So sad he passed so young. Fifty-seven!"
Julie: "I—"

WPLJ ( formerly WABC-FM) was my gateway to FM. In the early 70s, it was commercial AND freeform, something that is an oxymoron in today's radio world. And it beat the pants off of WNEW, thanks to Scelsa et al.
