By the way, if you find yourself getting interested in heavy metal and its vast subgenres, you can consider it =all about= maximalism. ;-)

@scraps: yes for sure and the zombies too!! also metal is such a blind spot for me but you are right that it is very maximalist!! i will rectify this blind spot of mine

I ran into Dave Hill on someone else's podcast talking about the difference between black metal and death metal and it was fascinating as well as rad
Avatar 3:27am
BronwynB:

i would have no idea what the differences are, but my college boyfriend was the host of the metal show on our radio station (i did the "outsider music" show which was basically "wfmu jr") and he knew all those different genres, though he preferred to stick to something which i think was called grindcore?
Avatar 3:30am

When I finally got into metal, a little, I searched for very complicated music. Meshuggah, for instance. Technical thrash metal, djent (it’s a genre), etc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36am

When I want metal I have the luxury of going to the Oakland Metro Operahouse. Zoe B has been known to go on a metal jag ("This is the Zoe B Show. We can handle it")

Hello, not-sleepers. I like how the Elektroland colors blend with the playlist background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48am
diciassette:

I have always liked how the green and pink are the same hue and confuses the motion detector in your brain because it doesn't see the edges.
Avatar 3:48am
BronwynB:

@scraps: interestingly enough the title of his original straight play version (for TV) was "I, Don Quixote" because the producers didn't like the title "Man of La Mancha"- they thought people wouldn't get that it was a Don Quixote play.

There's also this: "I, Don Quixote has almost exactly the same plot and even much of the same dialogue as Man of La Mancha. Even the famous opening two lines of La Mancha's hit song The Impossible Dream appeared in this teleplay. According to a recently published academic book chapter by Cervantes scholar Howard Mancing, these lines and a few others were originally written as part of a preface for the now-forgotten 1908 play "Don Quixote" by Paul Kester. Wasserman, however, always claimed that the lines were his own, despite the allegation that they appeared in print six years before he was born. "
Avatar 3:53am
BronwynB:

@ken: it's the exact same color!!! i love it :D
Avatar 3:55am
BronwynB:

@diciassette: TIL that hue is not just a synonym for "color"!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56am

Wrong word! I knew it..

Maybe I meant luminosity

hey everyone!

it's Sunday 6 pm where I am and I staying home, listening, waiting for the laundry to finish and playing the Hellboy board game.
Avatar 4:05am
BronwynB:

no i think you were right! i looked up "hue" and apparently it means a color's relative lightness and the pink and green on the playlist seem to be about the same in that regard
Avatar 4:05am
Scraps:

Oh yeah Betty Davis, mm hmm, bam wham
Avatar 4:06am
BronwynB:

hey elwyn :D i did not know there was a hellboy board game, that sounds pretty great
  4:09am

@Bronwyn: it started as an officially licensed Kickstarter that got funded in August and the first wave of items got sent out a month ago and then that hit retail. i have the KS version.

Huh, didn’t know the Dream Syndicate were back.

Those last three songs, “neo-psychedelia” and Paisley Underground, convinced me even further that “psychedelia” is just Pop. (Nothing wrong with that, if it’s good!)

diciassette, I didn’t know you were correcting us! I thought you were maybe speculating. If anyone else was still thinking Lena Horne died recently, no, she died nine years ago. May 9, 2010.

I've only seen Yo La Tengo once. I'd love to see them again, but their shows are just too expensive here

Lena Horne's passing is noted on the LA Times web site in the "Most Read" category. I didn't notice the date was 2010. Sorry for the confusion.

That's surprising to me, fred! But after trying to buy Stereolab tickets maybe it shouldn't be.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24am

elwyn, you're in Australia! I was just noticing that Nic Dalton was in the Hotspots ("Perth Mint" was the clue). I am jealous that you've been to Philly.
  5:30am
elwyn:

the only Bonnie Prince William film I saw was Old Joy because YLT was doing a Q&A afterwards because they did the soundtrack.

Nic Dalton sometimes seems omnipresent. I have loved bands he was involved in such as Fuzzy. He's also in a band that makes music aimed at children in recent years. should be on Double Dip Recess more.
