Hi Otis!
Hi Jan!

Hello!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Mr Recent Birthday Boy :-)
Did you have a fun day?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:03pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ween! My goodness ... takes me back :-)
Avatar 3:04pm
Otis Fodder:

It was sweet, yea, thanks! The fun day turned into a couple of days, paying hommage to the half-century with an abundance of food, booze and pals.
Avatar 3:05pm
Otis Fodder:

The Autoroute image today is a highway in Quebec. This is the 30th show. I counted all by my myself!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

We're seven months old on the 26th :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:07pm
joe:

I was lucky enough to see Ween play one of their first NYC shows and I think it might have been one of their first shows outside of the Trenton NJ area.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Rich in Washington:

Gonna drive down the street to pick up a Pakistani lamb biryani, but will be listening on my mo-bile deevice.
Avatar 3:08pm
Otis Fodder:

Cool Joe! Caught them in 2000 in Seattle and 2007 in Toronto. The White Pepper 2000 show in Seattle was killer. They played PF Echoes in full at the end.
Avatar 3:08pm
Mr Fab:

Yo O!
Tipsy need to record a LOT more often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
joe:

Oh my god I just looked up the date of that show and it was almost 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Tipsy :-) The lead chap was on EML wasn't he? I seem to remember him posting a few times and being a lovely person :-)
Avatar 3:09pm
Otis Fodder:

Ween 30 years ago, that's so cool. That's like God Ween Satan/Pod period.
Avatar 3:10pm
Mr Fab:

I know that feeling joe, seems to happen more and more lately. it all seems like, well, not 'yesterday.' But not 30 frikken years ago!

Smokin' Cigarettes and watchin' Captain Kangaroo!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm

Yeah they were opening for the Dead Milkmen at Wetlands. If you are courious turns out the show is on Youtube. I'll post a link on the FB board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I refuse, point blank, to believe that ANY of this happened earlier than about five years ago tops.
Avatar 3:11pm
Otis Fodder:

I just picked up LL Cool J "Bigger and Deffer" on vinyl. 32 years ago?!?!? Whaaaaa.
Avatar 3:12pm
Otis Fodder:

@GG - You are correct. It's all 5 years ago. Sometimes 6, but mostly 5. There with ya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm
joe:

Everything is just 5 years ago. I like that.
Avatar 3:13pm
recordrouletteclub:

Otis! That LL Cool J LP has a cool track at the end with some Doo-Wop samples on it!! Neat LP.
Avatar 3:13pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, the line about Capt Kangaroo made me like "Flowers on the Wall" when I was but a wee lad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I watched some Captain kangaroo when I was small (five years ago ...) but my main jam was The Friendly Giant. Possibly solely a Canadian or PNW thing but I loved him. Such a gentle show :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm
chresti:

And everything that happened 5 years ago was 2 years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@chresti - high five! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I used to code to Kraftwerk - fitted the proper headspace :-)
Avatar 3:17pm
Otis Fodder:

Oh, Kraftwerk to work by. Perfect example. I'm playing a song today. ;)
Avatar 3:17pm
Mr Fab:

Well, it's weird because 30 years ago the culture wasn't much different than it is today. But look how the culture changed from 1950 to 1980. Head-spinning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
chresti:

I watched Captain Kangaroo, never while smoking cigarettes.
GG :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Oh God - 1950 and 1980 are like two different universes. I mean ... 1963 and 1967 are like two universes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm

Yes we do!!! We all love this! Keep talking! :-)

His ballads are great.

Wow it's the Disneyland Singers doing songs from a CTW show. This is so ahead of it's time in regards to crossover. Totally mind blown.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm

The Short Circus did the original! I'm sure you all have the Electric Company Album, because of the Tom Lehrer Songs on it.
  3:47pm
Martinibomb:

I had that record too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm

I discovered Tom Lehrer thanks to The Electric Company.

  3:53pm
Martinibomb:

@Otis when that CQ album came out I called Norton and they sent me a bunch of swag/free stuff and I threw a big Italian/mario bava party at a venue downtow. I plastered the whole placein white plastic and then put up black lights every where .. totally freaky best event I ever did
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm

Le Tigre does mind your own business
  3:53pm
RiW:

mind Your own business was by Chicks on Speed, I believe
  3:54pm
RiW:

pigface also covered it around 2000
  3:54pm
Martinibomb:

I thought mind yoru own business was Delta 5?
Avatar 3:54pm
Otis Fodder:

Did Chicks on Speed do it too? Cool. Might be later. Original was 1979 by Delta 5.
  3:55pm
Martinibomb:

Delta 5 in 1979 with Mind your own business great song!
Avatar 3:55pm
Otis Fodder:

@MB - Cool on that CQ party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
joe:

@Martinibomb that's the version I'm familier with until the Pigface cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
joe:

The Delta 5 version that is
  3:56pm
Martinibomb:

@Joe I actually have not heard the pigface cover so I gotta go listen to that now
Avatar 3:57pm
Otis Fodder:

Gonna check out the Pigface cover too, thanks Joe!
  3:57pm
Martinibomb:

My wife only heard the Delta 5 a year ago and she's completely obsessed with that song. It's possibly her favorite song of all time.
  3:58pm
Martinibomb:

Someone at her work asked her what her favorite kind of music is and she said, "Post-punk" and they were like, "Whats that? never heard of it." hah

Oops- Chicks on Speed (thought it was Le Tigre, same thing, just about) around late nineties, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

YES!!! I was over the other side of the room and shouted "Is that R Dean Taylor?!" Happy face.
Avatar 4:03pm
Otis Fodder:

@christi - Le Tigre's first album is so good. Yea, both bands are tops.
Avatar 4:03pm
Otis Fodder:

@GG - YES! Amazing album that can still be had for like 2 bucks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm

Delta 5! Of course. It was Chicks on Speed who guested on their version on a Pigface album. I am all mixed up. That hot biryani scrambled my brainpan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm

I love "Get off the internet"
Avatar 4:04pm

chresti: I was just this second reading an amusing tweet from Mark!
Avatar 4:09pm
Mr Fab:

MB, rather than "post-punk" she could say New Wave. But then they'd think she means stuff like Duran Duran. Or "alternative." But then they think she's into grunge...
Avatar 4:09pm
Mr Fab:

Weird hearing Chet Baker sing in a non-jazz context
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I need to look out for the CQ soundtrack after hearing these tracks - gorgeous :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
joe:

I read an article years ago about the top 50 "Dirtiest" album covers of all time. I think the Ohio Players has 9 on there LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@joe - there's an also an interview somewhere with the model about the whole process and how she ended up glued solid for hours! Apparently the honey and the hot studio lights created a basic solid toffee. They spent something like three very careful hours ungluing her so as not to damage her skin. Ouch! Astounding cover image there. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Rich in Washington:

The Ohio Players, Love Rollercoaster urban legend scared me as a little kid, because they kept playing the song on the radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Rich - not heard that! Do tell.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
joe:

You know I've never check I wonder if it was the same photographer on all those albums becuase whom ever it was they had a really lighting eye.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

@Rich in Washington. I remember the first time I heard that I remember thinking it was so weird was assoicated with the Ohio Players.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Rich in Washington:

That scream was some poor girl being murdered in the studio! Not just some stock recording of roller coaster riders after all! My cousin's best friend's teacher's pastor said it and everything, so it HAS to be true!
Avatar 4:30pm
Otis Fodder:

Oh Rich, I don't know about this urban legend. Gotta look it up. Early to mid 70s Ohio Players are so good. Pleasure with Funky Worm alone, my god.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
joe:

I would love to see a Rock & Roll Babylon book of some sort. It would have to be very low key though as you would get sued to hell and back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Kat in Chicago:

Duane on the main stream plays a Psychemagik rework of David Crosby's "Orleans", called "Valley of Paradise," that is just gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Rich in Washington:

I just remember being horrified that they kept playing it on the radio. No doubt my fears were stoked by my older siblings who took delight in screwing with each other's heads.
Avatar 4:32pm
Otis Fodder:

Oh wow, thanks Kat. I'll check out Duane's archives. I listen to Duane and Irwin in Archives a bunch catching up on that Wed action.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
Rich in Washington:

I love this LP.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Kat in Chicago:

here ya go, Otis psychemagik.bandcamp.com... I listen to Duane and Irwin live when work isn't too obnoxious. Sheena archives are often my doing-house-stuff-on-the-weekends soundtrack, but I'm off work today. Oh good lord this is an excessive version of "Time of the Season"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm at my usual halfway point so going to say goodnight to all you lovely people - catching up with the rest of Fun Friday tomorrow when I do some cooking. Thank you Otis!! You've set such a fabulous mellow groove today :-) Talk to you all later! :-)

'Switched-On Rock' and 'Moog Power'; - albums I bought used for no more than $2-3, then probly sold cuz I couldn't resist the siren song of wildly inflated records prices of recent eyars

Similar genre-jumping: I was pleased to discover that the Wollman skating rink in NYC played hip hop to skate to. I wonder if they still do.
Avatar 4:45pm

And like the barn.... I will go roller skating if there is a rink playing Guy Lafleur. Maybe I should DJ a rink again (my first DJ gig, age 16).

Oh I get to hang out with Devon from Morricone island this Sunday. Any interest in meeting up with us Rich?

I got to Dj a roller skating rink a comple times and loved it! Super fun. I did the thing I loved when I was a kid the "Stop Game" where the Dj stops the record and anybody left moving has to clear the rink. Love that game

That "I Will Survive" was amazing, even if I am still traumatized by having to square dance with my class mates in grade school who were absolutely disgusted with the idea of having to actually touch me. Having said that, I do prize my square-dance "Tiny Bubbles" record.

Kraftwerk were all over KROQ when "Computer World " came out. When they'd play LA it was in huge venues like the hollywood Bowl. Living here def gave me a skewed perspective

Some friend in High School gave me an 8-track of Autobahn (that his dad no longer wanted) because I told him I had an 8 track player and I played that tape to death. I still expect that ka-THUNK, switching tracks sound right in the middle of the title track when I listen to it to this day.

I remember seeing Kraftwerk LPs in Musicland as a teenager but they were expensive imports which NEVER went on sale.

Thank you. I play Computer Love on my Autoharp a lot.

Martinibomb:

yeah it's hard for me to imagine a world without kraftwerk now. I mean they might be my fave band or very close. but for the first 20 years of my life I never got to hear them.

Martinibomb:

When I first moved to Portland and had a graveyard job this coworker from Chicago who was really into music was like, "You've never heard of Kraftwerk?" And totally took pity on me.. schooled me on all that stuff and beyond

I love Computer World. I know there's this Kraut snobbery thing that tends to look down on their 70s, Emil Schult inspired era, but I love it.

Oh wow didn't realize this was the beach boys! is this a Brian Track?

If you can find it, that Kraftwerk and the Electronic Revolution documentary is quite good. Really long, but very good.

Otis Fodder:

@MB - Just looked it up: ""Here Comes the Night" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love for the American rock band The Beach Boys. It was originally released on their 1967 album, Wild Honey. In 1979, the song was re-recorded and released on their 1979 album, L.A. (Light Album), as a disco song lasting nearly eleven minutes."

  5:02pm
Martinibomb:

It's kind of a minimal techno version of the original
Avatar 5:03pm
Don-O:

I'm guessing Mike Love is aching to do this version on tour....
Avatar 5:04pm
Don-O:

Well, this is the instrumental version, so you don't have to suffer along with Brian.

this is more influenced by contemporary hip hop from the way the beats are programmed so that's funny to me as someone who always goes at it from the late80s/90s side
