Greetings and thanks for being here, Kurt
  10:06pm
Dean:

"complete bull"? You might want to rephrase the, coelacanth∅.
Avatar 10:07pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

haha, complete bull. i'm good with that.
good evening, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
coelacanth∅:

haha, wish i'd realised that before posting i would've put a ... before "complete bull"

in france, they call that a "banister moment," coel.

ah i see. thanks Kurt!
Avatar 10:14pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

this might be my favorite of ashley's operas. certainly his most sonically abstract, anyway.
Avatar 10:14pm
northguineahills:

@Kurt: So, an example of "The jerk store called and they are out of you?" (Constanza joke is old, as am I).
Avatar 10:14pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

coel, yeah, see the link i posted. the idea is, you've left the party, you're walking down the stairs (apartments are sooo parisian) and you think of the _perfect_ thing you should have said.
  10:15pm
Dean:

During law school I hosted a listening party at our apartment during which we listened to Improvement in its entirety.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
coelacanth∅:

yes i think this must be my favorite Robert Ashley track
(to be honest the only thing i've heard of his -so far- that i don't turn the radio off for!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
coelacanth∅:

...but i actually like this!
Avatar 10:17pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

ngh, exactly re: jerk store
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
coelacanth∅:

Kurt, my Life, it seems, is just an infinitely repeating banister moment
Avatar 10:18pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

and watch for the new version of 'improvement' to be released sometime soon. i don't know when, but i'll be advancing a track next tuesday afternoon, filling in for pseu. really fantastic.
  10:19pm
Dean:

Ooooh, good to know! Will advise a friend of mine for whom Improvement was the gateway drug to a full-on Ashley addiction.
Avatar 10:20pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

it's a recording from the recent run at the kitchen, which was so good. the cd will be on lovely music, ltd.

I somehow got lucky and found Ashley's "Perfect Lives" vinyl box set in a junk store in Bed-Stuy. A live recording....
Avatar 10:22pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

"perfect lives" is also my favorite ashley.
most ashleys are my favorite ashley.
  10:23pm

Jeff G. played a track from Perfect Lives last Sunday, I believe.

Doug Schulkind:

This was so much better than Ashley's earlier opera, Mylanta: Acts of Porcelain.

Hey-O! You've been great. I'll be here all week.
Avatar 10:24pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

doug, i'm laughing and i wish i weren't.

@Doug: Should we try the veal, and tip the waitress? (and there goes the budum shh....)
  10:27pm
Dean:

Doug is operating as the latest among the long line of revisionists that began with PDQ Bach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm
Doug Schulkind:

Sounded a bit like "Let's Do the Time Warp Again" in there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm

goodnight TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
coelacanth∅:

i had trouble letting Maggie go too, but in the end she made it easy.
  10:34pm
Dean:

And the intro to this Marquess of Kensington resembles Nilsson's "One," which I listened to as performed by Three Dog Night just before tuning in here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm
coelacanth∅:

i might well not be able to access the internet where i'm going so in case of that i thank you now Kurt. Thank you Kurt.

If you haven't already heard it, run -- don't walk! -- to acquire this recent release by pianist Eric Lu: http://www.genuin.de/en/03_k.php?k=733 Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, gorgeously performed and recorded.

i went through all my jarman solo albums after he died in january. i have had good feelings about them but hadn't heard them in a long time and was surprised how little i remembered on the later ones. really wonderful music in there.
  11:42pm
Dean:

You know, Roscoe is playing at Victo this week. I heard him not long ago with Tyshawn, who is also playing at Victo this year, in a home in Berkeley. The performance was beautiful. But what struck me most was time I spent chatting with a woman who showed up with her son, a high school student. Turns out she is Lester Bowie's widow.
Avatar 11:43pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

oh wow!
  11:44pm
