The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Agreed, Bob. Talking nostalgically about rock in songs takes me out of it. To me it's still alive, I don't need to reflect on it.

Yes, Bob. THAT is weird...and your own cross to bear.

I'm guessing S.F. Sorrow is NOT your favorite rock opera, and neither is Tommy.

At work, one of my co-worker's Pandora stations gets priority over WFMU until she leaves. Nevertheless, when The Dixie Cups or Harry Belafonte come on, everybody (yes, me too) jumps up and down and sings along. Actually, I'm probably the worst.

The Charlatans were the first hippie band. Maybe neck and neck with Rising Sons. Real psychedelia is very different from what I think of as psychesploitation.

I have plenty of affection for psychesploitation. There are so many great records. What amuses me is the "did they or didn't they?" (dose) question. I think there are a lot of "fake" psyche records made by people that were...*expanded*...but did the pastiche because there was a buck in it.

How do you attempt recreate a psychedelic experience sonically if you don't know what that experience is? If you're not "experienced" then you're trying to create what you imagine it to be at best, and aping mannerisms, at worst. Those mannerisms became a vocabulary.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
coelacanth∅:

it often sounds like psych -especially when it's lyrics are actually about mind-altering substances, or the experience, is disgenuine, created for money, or to be hip; but having tried the drugs certainly is not necessary to make great, genuine psyche.
(shocking blue being a good example, in my opinion)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
Uncle Michael:

How so, CC?
Avatar 9:56pm
bigplanetnoise:

She's only rock n roll...

(but then, i think there's a difference between "psyche" music and "trippy" music)

but then genuine acid heads create an album called Easter Everywhere and remind everyone what acid rock should sound like
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm

Well, coel, there's psychedelia and then there's "psyche" as a musical genre. One can make the latter without psychedelic experience. I'd argue that you can't make the former without it.
