Hello Doug.
Stand up and raise a glass to....

Avatar 7:55am ausmanx:

hey brian, and doug, do love topic although they can be a bit po=faced at times and i tend to think that folk tradition should be more fun! we should also raise a glass to Dr John... gris gris one of the great records of all time, i reckon...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:03am Brian in UK:

What-ho ausmanx, heavy precipitation here, just had four days of visitors, so in recovery mode.
If you start out as a communist based idea the laughs might be a bit thin on the ground.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am Doug Schulkind:

Topic has played a key role in the universe, and they should be toasted. On Dr. John was a universe unto himself.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:06am Brian in UK:

I am sure that this gif has featured on FMU previously.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13am Doug Schulkind:

A similar one surely has, though this particular GIF I created myself last evening. Keep your eyes open for a variation. Coming soon to a playlist near you.
Avatar 8:13am ausmanx:

communists can be very funny indeed!
  8:49am Jeff Conklin:

If Topic released only those Anne Briggs, Dick Gaughan and Nic Jones records they’d still be legends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of legends: Mr. Conklin is here!
  8:54am Jeff Conklin:

Shows sounding perfect this morning. Thanks, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57am Doug Schulkind:

  9:00am Jeff Conklin:

Ha just realized it was a bit early. Still nice to get some Ornette before the second cup of coffee.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Doug Schulkind:

I hate myself for having to fade out Ornette. That's breaking a natural law of the universe.

Missed Gina's show last week, we went to see Fairport Convention (acoustic, apart from 5 string electric bass). Excellent sound and content.
There was also an 8 string acoustic guitar. Do not see many in captivity.
Avatar 9:12am ausmanx:

why does anyone bother scheduling circket there, brian? it just gets rained off. speaking of acoustic guitar, i have kazuo imai in my living room this wednesday. he asked for an inexpensive one, so god knows what he plans to do to it!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

One week from today is the 16th anniv. of Knepper's death.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of jazz, I learned recently that MC5 lead singer Rob Tyner (née Derminer) took the last name in tribute to then Coltrane pianist McCoy Tyner.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Jeff Golick:

Well, Knepper's Death isn't nearly as fun to say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Knepper's Death was (say it with me) the name of my first band in high school.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:43am Brian in UK:

Whereas Nipper was the name of the dog on HMVs logo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Uncle Michael:

And RCA's...which was first?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Our Lord and Savior is on bass clarinet here.
  10:44am Listener Gregory:

Knepper is the musician that Charles Mingus punched in the mouth on the bandstand. Mingus also sent a package of heroin to Knepper's house and then alerted the narks that it was coming. Yet, by all accounts he was a very quiet, nice guy.
  10:44am Marie:

  10:46am Marie:

"Jazz Cigarette"--great name for a band
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47am Brian in UK:

Think HMV was in the Twenties.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Hopey Sockmonkey:

And it's never too early
  10:48am Funky16Corners:

I love the story about Mingus briefly joining Ellington’s band, and getting into a knife fight with Juan Tizol. Duke took him aside and said he had to let him go. “Juan is an old problem. You’re a new problem. I don’t need any new problems.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am David D:

I was referring to the music by the way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Good to see you, David D! Happy to see you, Hopey Sockmonkey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Jeff Golick:

I don't know this Lee Morgan record! Jeez, '66 with Jackie and Mobley!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:49am Brian in UK:

Could call it Jazz Fag but we call cigarettes, fags as in rhyming slang Harry Rag = Fag. I believe that it has a different meaning on your side.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

(Though the cover is very "Liberty-years Blue Note," not Reid Miles.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

Recorded in '66, but not released until much later. 1969 or maybe even early '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Uncle Michael:

Reid Miles and Saul Bass were related...even if they weren't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

No one could turn it around like Billy Higgins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

I'm just staring into space, smiling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

No one had a more fitting nickname. Smiling Billy Higgins. Always with the grin, that beautiful brother!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

(I am not, however, Billy Higgins.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Few people are, Jeff Golick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Doug Schulkind:

Bennie Maupin, on loan from Elton John, on tenor sax here. That is a lie. Not the he's on tenor part. The other part.

There's something fishy about that comment, Listener Gregory.
  11:16am Listener Gregory:

It's a bit cheesy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

Groovemonger!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Jeff Golick:

I dunno, it makes me eel good.
  11:19am Listener Gregory:

I don't know if "Ebong Water Monger" is going to look good on Doug's resumé.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

(Oops, I think I confused my mongers with my congers.)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am Brian in UK:

We used to have costermongers and ironmongers years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

You make me feel mighty eel!
  11:23am Dean:

The entry for "monger," the noun, in OED is fascinating. In fact, derogatory usages emerged in the 16th century. This illustration from Robert Burns in 1786 is too good to ignore: "Send Willie the monger to hell with a smack." It wasn't until the 20th century that the word was deployed as a verb, e.g., this from Anthony Burgess: "Not even Hedda Hopper could monger scandal in her regard."
  11:24am Listener Gregory:

According to my dictionary, "monger" means both someone who sells a particular product and someone who engages in a disreputable activity (like gossip monger or warmonger). Strange that the neutral meaning turned into something derogatory.

There's no "peace monger" or "justice monger." I guess they're not for sale.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

GTDS listeners are a edumacated bunch!
  11:27am Dean:

Maybe not so strange when you consider that the neutral activity -- participating in a market as a provider of goods -- has also taken on derogatory shadings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am chresti:

nice transition there
  11:29am Dean:

Ha! A great illustration from 1548: "Foule priestes.., and holy water mongers, daylye peruertinge the ignoraunt people."

I only regret that I have but two GIFs of the MC5 to give for the listeners.
