Meet Mdou Moctar, the scorching visionary Tuareg rock guitarist! You may know Moctar from his star turn in the first-ever Tuareg-language dramatic movie, a desert-rocking adaptation of Purple Rain. Now he has a blistering new album, Ilana: The Creator (Sahel Sounds), which NPR Music calls "perhaps the most fiery psych-rock of the 21st century". Hear Moctar chat with Rob tonight and then come to WFMU's Monty Hall Wednesday night June 26th to see Mdou Moctar and his super-charged band blow your mind!

Interview
(1:25:43 Pop-up)
Moctar explains that there's no word for "purple" in the Tamasheq (Tuareg) language so the Tuareg adaptation of Purple Rain's title translates literally to "Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It"

Mdou Moctar:
Interview
(1:32:44 Pop-up)
Moctar talks about the variations in the nature of his earlier recordings, and then introduces the title cut of the new album, which talks about the struggles of the Tuareg people. He's very critical of the French colonial and post-colonial relationship.

"Effacer" basically means to wipe out or destroy - I didn't quite catch that in the interview! He's critical in this song of French colonialists (and others), as he sees it, taking advantage of less powerful people.

In this song Moctar is singing to his mom about his experience of the world in his musical travels, compared to life at home. Also he mentions during the interview that at his merch table on tour you can buy Tuareg jewelry and the proceeds from that are going toward a school construction project back home.
