No, it's true I am a simpleton when it comes to this experimental stuff, but I always give it a try.

Avatar 8:30pm
northguineahills:

Nice Bartok!
  8:34pm
mzzmz:

I've listened many conductors' of this piece. Reiner was the best having the great drive. incredible that he commissioned it then got it completely.
Avatar 8:36pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

mzz, i didn't realize it was his commission! interesting.
  8:36pm
mzzmz:

some modern recordings have painfully obvious pasting at some sections. this 1958 recording was live as it should. pretty amazing.
Avatar 8:39pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

yeah, i've long loved it, although to be honest it's been ages since i've listened to it. something just struck me this week to play it.
  8:41pm
mzzmz:

whhops Reiner wasn't the once commsisioned it. my bad.
Avatar 8:42pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

haha, no worries.
Avatar 8:54pm
northguineahills:

Du Yun, new to me!
Avatar 8:55pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

yeah, she's pretty great.
  9:02pm
Dean:

This is a sorely needed breath of fresh air. I wish I'd tuned in earlier. The BoaC folks are channeling latter day King Crimson.
Avatar 9:03pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

dean, jah, i was thinking this had a crimson hue too.
Avatar 9:05pm
TDK60:

How do, was just over in the blues show...
  9:05pm
Dean:

And I don't even like latter day KC, but this is a refreshing piece. Kinda fun that it's a "capriccio" of mourning.
Avatar 9:07pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

welcome over to the other side, tdk.

dean, written after the death of a friend and inspired by bach's "capriccio on the departure of a beloved brother" according to the notes - a piece i'm not familiar with by that name.
  9:09pm
Dean:

Nor I. Have to look that one up. Among my most favorite pieces is Buxtehude's Klaglied for his departed father. It is *not* a capriccio.
  9:12pm
Dean:

Here's the marvelous Tureck performing that Bach "Capriccio": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIxxnEkOjf0

How have I not heard this before?
Avatar 9:13pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i listened to my whole box set of every single goddamned extant bach composition so presumably i've heard it, but i can't remember them all...
  9:14pm
Dean:

There are Bach compositions, "Bach" compositions, and Bach "compositions." That's a hard corpus to nail down.
Avatar 9:14pm
TDK60:

there's a box set of /all/ of Bach? How many boxes?
  9:15pm
Dean:

Didn't Telefunken try something like that one hell of a long time ago?
Avatar 9:16pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

dean, indeed.

tdk, it's 155 discs in a box that can't support the weight.
Avatar 9:17pm
TDK60:

..even Bach is finite (but doesn't seem so!)..
Avatar 9:18pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

the same label -- brilliant classics -- has a mozart set that's even bigger. but then you're stuck with mozart.
  9:21pm
Dean:

Ah, Brilliant. I just acquired a 26CD box of recorder music. "Hey, everybody! I'm having a party! Wait 'til you hear what I'm playing."

"...stuck with Mozart." One day, Kurt, you'll come to appreciate him. Really, Mozart gets a very bad rap these (and in earlier) days. Listen to him.
Avatar 9:22pm
northguineahills:

Still doesn't hold a torch of John Zorn and co's 500 disc set from mostly live sets in China in 90s (mostly w/ Yamataka Eye). I only saw it advertised in the Wire once 20 years ago....
Avatar 9:23pm
northguineahills:

cthulhulu knows what they included for that much material....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
chresti:

I don't think I'd mind a party with recorder music
  9:25pm
Dean:

Come on over, chresti! It's marvelous. Starts with solo stuff by, naturally, Van Eyck, moves into some German and Italian stuff, Vivaldi (admittedly, a hard sell, due to market saturation), but nothing "modern," sadly.
Avatar 9:27pm
northguineahills:

I have a bunch of recorders, but over the years, they seem to break (I sometimes get percussive w/ my instruments live).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
chresti:

The only recorder music I remember hearing was of a elementary school recorder band, I think, could of been a high school band
  9:34pm
Dean:

I have a few recorders and a good deal of recorder music. I once traveled to Europe to traipse around with Rene Clemencic's Consort. His "Et Ses Flutes" LP is an essential record for recorder admirers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm
chresti:

wow, sounds like fun!
Avatar 9:37pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

dean, i've listened, i have.

i love telemann's recorder music, tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
chresti:

This is lovely, thanks Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm
SeanG:

tune in, turn on, drop out, locked in
  9:42pm
Dean:

I adore Telemann, my favorite "boring" composer. A DJ in LA, Jim Svejda used to devote shows to Telemann's music precisely because he can't stand it. I loved those shows, because I in fact love Telemann, played well or badly, and because Svejda was unrelentingly critical, which was fun.

But Mozart deserves ongoing attention. Dark, dark stuff, beautiful, touching, scary, mind-bending...I don't often listen to his work, but just enough to recall how moving and gorgeous it remains.
Avatar 9:45pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

maybe one day one of us will change our minds about mozart, dean. or maybe not.
  9:46pm
Dean:

Heh, I've changed my mind about Mozart many times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47pm
spodiodi:

ah yes
Avatar 9:52pm
TDK60:

..even the Purple one is finite. good night to DJ KG and all the miniatures..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56pm
SeanG:

crash ensemble sounded real good, thanks kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm
spodiodi:

Thanks, Kurt!
