Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

Usually you create these pages well in advance. I found your other show on mixcloud and added it to my queue. I also followed your little used account there.
Avatar 9:59pm geezerette:

Avatar 9:59pm Little Danny:

Oh man, thanks Matt! Yeah I forgot to get tonight's show's page up and running in advance
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

take her away Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm Alex In Illinois:

Oooops! I meant Cool Blue Flame!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm JtotheK:

Salutations Danny and everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm fleep:

Greetings Danny & Blueberries.
Avatar 10:01pm Little Danny:

Greetings everyone! Always with the little skips in sound over here. Sorry! And gimme a sec...
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:

I could not love this song more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm Alex In Illinois:

I got Wednesday mixed up with Thursday for a minute. I should have just typed: "See you all at Danny's".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm chresti:

Hi Cool blue flames and Little Danny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’m thoroughly confused by what you typed about this track
  10:02pm Doug Schulkind:

Cool Blue Danny!
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

@Matt: in regard to the skips?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm JtotheK:

Venus, nice Bananarama cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm fleep:

Anyone else getting glitches?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Matt from New Orleans:

The artist is Bill Osborn and it features a guitar solo by Doug Allen?
Avatar 10:05pm geezerette:

Not glitchy here, Fleep.
Avatar 10:05pm Little Danny:

Yes, I'm carefully unplugging and plugging all my cables. This seems to happen sometimes, though usually works itself out fairly quickly. It's hella annoying tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm doctorjazz:

There's another show? How do you find it? (Oh, Hi)
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm chresti:

Haha Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm fleep:

Smooth now, must have been lumps in the internet again
Avatar 10:09pm geezerette:

Internet needs a strainer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10pm Matt from New Orleans:

Doc the info is here on Danny’s Instagram.
Avatar 10:10pm Little Danny:

Okay. Cool.

Hello friends old and new!!! Matt, Geez, Flash, Alex, Jason, Fleep, Chresti, Doc, Coel! And that weirdo Doug Schulkind!
Avatar 10:12pm Little Danny:

It's absolutely a gremlin somewhere in my machines, Fleep, alas
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

@doc: yes I have a Wednesday night show at this same time on our local NPR affiliate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Matt. Found the radio home page, have to find the show, should be able to track it down, though.
Avatar 10:14pm Little Danny:

Occasionally there's some overlap between the consecutive nights, but I try to keep it to a minimum. Also this show is way more fun.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm doctorjazz:

Hurt!!! Great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm Matt from New Orleans:

Because there’s feedback from the peanut gallery?
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

His guitar playing is stunning, timeless.
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

@Matt: Yes! But also this show lets me indulge myself more
Avatar 10:17pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm doctorjazz:

I remember learning this Hurt tune on guitar years back...not actually hard to get the notes down, but could never capture that snap and feel...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Matt from New Orleans:

The program director at the npr station has more feedback about show content?
Avatar 10:21pm Little Danny:

@Matt: actually and thankfully no. But nonetheless I just don't get as freeform with it.
Avatar 10:21pm northguineahills:

Everything is A-Okeh over here (and early spelling of okay).
Avatar 10:23pm Little Danny:

Amazingly relevant spelling, NGH. Hi bud.
Avatar 10:24pm Little Danny:

Wow, I'm sure I knew you were a guitar player, doc, but that's impressive nonetheless
Avatar 10:24pm geezerette:

Lotsa twang tonight. :)
Avatar 10:26pm Little Danny:

Indirectly inspired by Flash's show, geez! It's gonna get evener surfier in my next set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm Matt from New Orleans:

Got ya. It’s weird to me that Sony Legacy never bothered to release the Mississippi John Hurt Okeh recordings and instead licenses them out. I was able listen to many of the original acetates when my friend used to work at Sony Legacy.
  10:30pm Dean:

This VU inspired by Uncle Michael's 300th show theme?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm doctorjazz:

Musta been some day...
Avatar 10:32pm Little Danny:

Nope! Didn't know of that, Dean. Hullo friend
  10:33pm Dean:

Ha! Mere coincidence, then. The entire playlist, not counting the obligatory "Albatross," consisted of songs called "One of These Days."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm doctorjazz:

Cale must be doing most of the note playing, Reed the feedback (Can't picture Reed being able to play that many notes)
  10:40pm Dean:

I'm hearing Borbetomagus and Hijokaidan at Victo in what's now playing, sax and guitar. Doesn't match the playlist. Something amiss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm doctorjazz:

(Sometimes my phone seems to be out of sync (behind) with what's playing...I'm hearing one tune while the playlist is on to something else)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm doctorjazz:

Now no talking, must be inn the stream
Avatar 10:41pm northguineahills:

This Big Chenier kills! (and new to me), nice Sharrock vibe!
Avatar 10:41pm geezerette:

Same here.
Avatar 10:42pm geezerette:

...bummer stream...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm doctorjazz:

Is that what's on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

i think it switched to the stream in a seamless serendipitous segue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm doctorjazz:

Stream? My guess,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

... (i didn't hear any big chenier)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’ve been hearing discordant music for quite some time here
  10:44pm Dean:

Can't say for sure, but it does sound like Borbetomagus and Hijokaidan's Ends Burning. That vein, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm doctorjazz:

(Danny is supposed to be announcing, must be the stream)
  10:44pm Dean:

In any event, not "Music behind DJ."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm coelacanth∅:

...(not sure i heard the la la blues. i was washing a knife. what i heard was vu into this, which works!)
Avatar 10:45pm geezerette:

Discordant here too.
  10:45pm Dean:

Rather, Both Noises End Burning: https://www.discogs.com/Borbetomagus-Hijokaidan-Both-Noises-End-Burning/master/6503
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm doctorjazz:

All praise Doug's hard drive!

Masayuki Takayanagi New Direction Unit - My Friend, Blood Shaking My Heart
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm doctorjazz:

It was quite a nice segue, agree witl Coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm fleep:

Drummer playlist onlineradiobox.com...
  10:48pm Dean:

I had a psychic experience at the late Weirdo Records in Cambridge, Mass., involving that record. I'd been looking for it here on the West Coast, was in Boston for an event, and headed to Cambridge to go to Weirdo. As I approached the store, my nose twitched and I thought, "I'm going to find Both Noises End Burning here." And I did.
Avatar 10:50pm northguineahills:

@Dean: I have that album, I should have recognized it.!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm coelacanth∅:

but, where's Danny? does he even know he's not on?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm fleep:

Did we lose Danny, too?
  10:50pm Dean:

Not saying that was it, NGH. The noise we heard reminds me of it.
Avatar 10:51pm Little Danny:

  10:52pm Dean:

So was Fuck the group or the song?
Avatar 10:52pm Little Danny:

Sorry 'bout that y'all!!! Did it cut out during my extra-rambly mic break?
Avatar 10:52pm geezerette:

Can't get back! I'll try again later.
  10:52pm Dean:

Definitely was not Slowdive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Matt from New Orleans:

Way before
  10:53pm Dean:

Never made it to the mic break. Cut out as VU was concluding, I'm guessing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Matt from New Orleans:

It cut off about a minute into VU according to that page fleep posted
Avatar 10:54pm northguineahills:

Well, this is definitely Slowdive (I have this on flexi)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm doctorjazz:

Never heard Mic break
Avatar 10:54pm northguineahills:

There is a band, of course, called fuck.....
Avatar 10:55pm Little Danny:

Huh. That really stinks. Sorry again, y'all. It was a doozy of a snoozy mic break. Lots of me pausing to remember things.
  10:55pm Dean:

Yes, now Slowdive after a pop-up refresh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Matt from New Orleans:

We heard the entirety of that Japanese track which was really cool but crazy intense. It runs 19:44.
Avatar 10:56pm Little Danny:

Also I yelled at y'all for not clicky-staring the Nathan Abshire. Now I understand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm chresti:

it's on now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm Matt from New Orleans:

Danny’s show is back on
Avatar 10:58pm Little Danny:

I called out several of you by name. Doc, Matt, NGH
Avatar 10:59pm northguineahills:

Wildhoney, new to me for some reason (as I've been a shoegaze junky since my teens).
Avatar 11:01pm Little Danny:

though that track is the highlight of their first album IMO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll listen to those missed 20+ min in the archive
Avatar 11:06pm northguineahills:

I have a quadrillion things on my plate tomorrow, so, I should crash soon (if I can sleep). If I'm not back, thanks LD!...
Avatar 11:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Just in time for the surfadelic jamboree! Hey Danny.
  11:09pm Dean:

Used to listen to this BF4 album all the time c.1970.
Avatar 11:10pm Franco Twinkie:

I get the feeling I picked a good time to go to the farmers market. Lights out for awhile?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11pm fleep:

The yellow masks dropped down and there was turbulence but we came through
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Matt from New Orleans:

I’ve never seen Belong booked at a venue here. The only spot that might book them is zeitgeist. Apparently they’re based here.
Avatar 11:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Ha! Just drove by the old KRLA studio, Which was in a bungalow at The Huntington Sheridan on El Molino. My way home from said farmers market.
Avatar 11:15pm northguineahills:

Speaking of yellow masks, I wish we had the American equivalent of gillets jaunes…… (I'm sick of this shit, thanks for the music).
Avatar 11:15pm Kris Holmes:

Fairly certain I need to get myself a copy of that Syl Foreman
Avatar 11:16pm Little Danny:

Dang right you do. Hey Kris!
Avatar 11:17pm Franco Twinkie:

A Standells like sound. Powered by Vox.
Avatar 11:17pm geezerette:

Back! Hippy pop!
Avatar 11:17pm Little Danny:

Didn't know that about Belong, Matt. Not sure if they're still an ongoing concern FWIW
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Matt from New Orleans:

Is the Syl Forman song called before I leave you?
  11:18pm Dean:

Was KROQ at one time in or near Pasadena, too? I recall visiting at least once.
Avatar 11:19pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, it was right down the street from my house.
  11:21pm Dean:

I'm thinking Jed the Fish was on air at the time, '79 or so? We were promoting our stupid shitty single. Later, Rodney Bingenheimer made it to Van Nuys to hear us play.
Avatar 11:21pm Little Danny:

Dang, yes, thanks Matt!
Avatar 11:22pm geezerette:

Rodney! & The GTOs.
Avatar 11:22pm Franco Twinkie:

That's great! You got a nod from Rodney.
Avatar 11:23pm Franco Twinkie:

Geeze! Get in there with the pop stars! Want some of my Tab?
  11:24pm Dean:

I was working with Flipside. They knew him well. Before one of our shows at the Masque Brendan introduced us, unenthusiastically, as "the ultimate in embarrassment rock."
Avatar 11:24pm geezerette:

Ha! Franco. :)
Avatar 11:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Brendan could be a real grouch.
Avatar 11:26pm geezerette:

Dean, sounds like a jerk. Of course, Punk...
  11:27pm Dean:

Not at all a jerk, nor a grouch in my experience. He did the best he could. Besides, we embraced the epithet.
Avatar 11:27pm Kris Holmes:

Ahhhhhhh it’s my song. Dan you have this 45 filed? Dang!!!
Avatar 11:29pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, Chresti and I were over at Stan's house, Brendan was in the kitchen and I didn't even recognize him. His hair was white and he was wearing old man glasses. He died soon after.
Avatar 11:29pm Kris Holmes:

When Joe wrote this he was trying to write a song that sounded like More Today Than Yesterday! Makes sense!
Avatar 11:29pm Little Danny:

Heh. I knew this'd draw you back here Kris. I have a whipped copy filed. You heard an MP3
Avatar 11:31pm Kris Holmes:

Flea Market dude had a copy for $3000 & a guy flew over from the UK to buy it off him at Bussey’s last summer!
  11:31pm Dean:

That LA punk thing was a supernova. I'm sorry we lost so many greats way too early.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Matt from New Orleans:

Bronzeville is a neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
Avatar 11:35pm geezerette:

Dean, there was a cult of self-destruction, never understood that aspect, but what a creative time. So much energy and a lot of brilliant people.
  11:39pm Dean:

I agree with your second sentence, geezerette. As for the first, well, that's not an issue, at least not in America, exclusive to LA punk.
Avatar 11:43pm geezerette:

Dean, thought about that while typing. Not saying it was exclusive to punk, but there really was peer pressure to take extreme physical risks. Part of the aesthetic.
Avatar 11:46pm geezerette:

Best thing to me was the anti-corporate attitude.
Avatar 11:46pm Franco Twinkie:

I have a young friend (He's only fifty!) He got into the scene when hardcore was an aspect of the de-evolution of punk in LA. He says he made lots of bad choices in shows to go to. I never went to that stuff in the OC. or the south bay. I was far removed from the stupidity by then.
Avatar 11:47pm Little Danny:

Okay, thanks Matt! At least I remembered THAT correctly
Avatar 11:50pm geezerette:

Franco, yeah, surf punks, skate punks; kind of a gang thing in some places.
  11:50pm Dean:

Not in my (nervously managed) experience. No different to me than ordinary high school stupidity. Darby, sure. But Alice Bag? Tomata? Others? Not so much.

I most appreciated the tributes to apathy. Not caring is such a crucial value.

To my mind, punk was long gone by the time hardcore emerged in OC.
Avatar 11:52pm geezerette:

Well, generations...Seattle in 90s not unrelated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm chresti:

Do the batman baby! Whatta show, LD, thanks!
  11:53pm Dean:

Holy crap, Chick Corea and Milford Graves on this Montego Joe!
Avatar 11:53pm geezerette:

Danny, great show, stream issues and all!
  11:53pm Dean:

Oh, yeah. Seattle. Forgot about them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm chresti:

They were older@Dean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Matt from New Orleans:

I saw Montego Joe playing with someone in NY in the 90s but can’t recall the bandleader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm chresti:

(Bag, Tomata)
Avatar 11:56pm Franco Twinkie:

I could have cared less. There were so many types, variations, mutations and new strains of wild music. But I was older than a lot of the kids...
Avatar 11:56pm geezerette:

Chresti, good point!
Avatar 11:56pm Little Danny:

Thank you flammeurs!
Avatar 11:57pm Franco Twinkie:

Tomata was a great guy! Humble and funny.
  11:58pm Dean:

Not sure what age has to do with it. Old and young alike can be self-destructive.
Avatar 11:58pm geezerette:

Ha! & he did plenty!
  11:59pm Dean:

ISWYDT, geezerette.
Avatar 12:00am Franco Twinkie:

True that, but regarding the topic, there was a lot of general dopeyness that WAS specific to age.
Avatar 12:00am Franco Twinkie:

Night Danny!
Avatar 12:02am geezerette:

More to say, no time!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am chresti:

The younger ones, teens, are generally more reckless
  12:04am Dean:

Fingers in my ears. I won't hear that about the youngsters.

Have you noticed lately our Senate, our President? Our CEOs? Our higher education administrators? They're not reckless?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am chresti:

The crazy older ones often started young, to the point of no return, in some cases.
Avatar 12:06am Franco Twinkie:

Dean, just shut up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:06am coelacanth∅:

Thanks Danny
  12:07am Dean:

Alas, they weren't self-destructive enough.

Yeah, you're right, Franco. Done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07am chresti:

I'm referring to la punks
Avatar 12:07am geezerette:

Oh, Dean, that's a looooong conversation. Click the duck meanwhile.
  12:08am Dean:

Swoon. Nobody has ever before asked me to click the duck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08am chresti:

They never grew up @Dean
Avatar 12:09am geezerette:

:) ha-ha!
Avatar 12:09am Little Danny:
