Happy Saturday Mayuko, Fred, and James!
I had the pleasure of seeing Chirgilchin with Yuliyana Krivoshapkina a few weeks back. Incredible show.

I saw Matmos this week in a small venue, a good show. And I got to talk briefly with M.C. Schmidt when he noticed my WFMU T-shirt before the show

2 people talked to me on the street yesterday because I was wearing Gary Panter's crazy cat T. One of them was even wearing one herself - Marcel M's shirt. That was funny.

@Mayuko Yuliyana Krivoshapkina in particular did some truly spellbinding, unbelievable stuff with a jaw harp. Vocal emulations of birds, wolves, and horses were all woven into the music.

Mayuko, two people in one day? Crazy! I get comments occasionally but rarely from anyone who knows the station. The bast was when a woman asked me what WFMU meant and then said, "Oh, I was thinking it meant World Full of Mutant Underlings".

Avatar 12:35pm
JosephB:

@Mayuko It's especially hard to go see all that stuff if you are also trying to make art or music. Everything takes time and sometimes there are always way too many things to see or do -- at least in places like NYC or LA.
  12:37pm
JakeGould:

@JosephB: Well the problem nowadays is while NYC has lots of stuff happening, it’s now all spread out all over the place. When Village was a creative center you could just land your ass there and then walk to tons of things. Not like that anymore… One thing in Red Hook… Another thing in Bushwick… Another in Chelsea… Another in another.

I’m first American born and in elementary school—simply based on my weird accent as a kid—they shoved me into a “speech” class because they considered me having an accent to be a learning issue.

Me, a deaf girl, a Hispanic kid with a palsy and the only black kid in my class all had “problems” because we didn’t have correct accents. Needless to say, I go in trouble because I would get angry at how they treated me—and my classmates with accents—as stupid at the time.

@rw @JakeGould In elementary school think I was in just about every "special" class you could put a kid in -- speech therapy, physical therapy, and a general class for learning differences with about five other kids for half the day. It's a weird thing to grow up with people telling you that you need help all the time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm
coelacanth∅:

i also was put in a "special" room. i went to most of the main classes but had to spent an hour/day (?) learning how to read, with 2-3 down syndrome kids and 1-2 others. the teacher, Ms.Piel, was brilliant and after a few questions gave me some literature on musical artists i liked, and determined that i can read just fine.

@Jake That's really ridiculous. Of course you or any kid would get angry and it sure makes me upset. Some American people are not even aware the fact that they were born in the most powerful country in the world and that they speak English with no accent give them tremendous advantage already, compared to the rest of the world in this era of global economy. Which is where the lack of imagination comes from, even amongst kids.

The “gradations” Mayuko spoke of are so interesting. I just mentioned to someone a few hours ago how most Uzbek restaurants have kimchi as a side dish. Not to mention so-called “Korean carrot salad” — not sure how Korean that really is, but it’s tasty. (Of course everything always ends up being about food with me.)

Coel. reading was a real problem for me as well. In the mid-sixties there were constantly articles in the major magazines of the day about UFO's and other unexplainable phenomena. It drove me nuts that I couldn't read the articles. The girl across the street lent me a pile of Archie comics in the summer between the forth and fifth grade. I was determined to learn to read. It worked! The following year when they tested us for aptitude, I was placed in the advanced reading group. I was afraid that they had made a mistake. I was so use to been treated like an idiot. But when they passed out the books, I could read them! However, my problems with school were far from over.
