I would read the heck out of that thesis. Hell, copyediting that would be a dream.

Hey Jeff! Been in since the git-go but puttering around the apartment. Happy as always to hear Spiegel!

fred, is it Stephen Graham's Notes from the Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music? It deals in part with DIY noise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am
Jeff Golick:

@listener james! Do you find copyediting harder when you're interested in the material?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
Jeff Golick:

@Dean! Did the thesis talk bring you here?

@northguineahills!
  9:56am
Dean:

That's one hypothesis, I suppose. But no, in this case correlation is not cause.

Today, us and the other attendees of my Uncle's birthday weekend in Chicago are going,by motor coach, on a 3 or 4 stop pizza tour, led by the 13-time James Beard-award-winning food reporter for the local ABC affiliate. He' a friend of my cousin.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am
fred:

@Dean and james: It's called "Aux marges du bruit. Une étude de la musique noise et du Do it Yourself" by Sarah Benhaim. In French, and highly unlikely to ever be translated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am
listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: In fact the danger there is getting sucked into tangents of fact-checking or Wiki wormholes! The edit might be a bit more attentive but my time spent longer with the effect of less profit on fixed-price jobs.

It's books that are riveting narratives that are really the risk, b/c if the story is compelling (like narrative nonfiction) I'll zoom along faster than is useful for editing or proofing. Proofed a book on the whole Bundy clan mess in the SW that was like that. Had to force myself to go slower while reading!

Hello Sunday folks!
  10:30am
Dean:

Dockstader writes in the 2003 release of the first of three volumes of Aerial that he was listening to short-wave radio for sounds "that occur when there are so many stations on the air, they over-ride each other and something strange emerges from the conflict."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am
Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am
Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that, @Dean. Do you have a link, too?
  10:33am
Dean:

I was reading either The Stranger or The Fall in my parents' kitchen the night we heard the news of the murder of John Lennon.
  10:34am
Dean:

No link, sorry. I transcribed from the liner notes of the first CD in the set. They're among my favorite records.

Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am

We're also reading an "answer song" of a book, called The Mersault Investigation, which is told from the POV of the brother of the murdered Arab of The Stranger.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am

Speaking of Lennon, there's a doc on one of the streaming services now, about the recording of Imagine etc., and it really made me sad all over again about losing him.

When docents lead tours at the MBC, do they pause for a word from their sponsors?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
Uncle Michael:

Yes, and when they have to go to the toilet they hold up a card that says "please stay tuned, we're experiencing technial difficulties".
  10:53am
Dean:

Was listening yesterday to Paul Smoker's Genuine Fables. We lost him just over three years ago.
  10:54am

And when they're forgetful they hold up a card with the Indian head test pattern.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am

(So, Jeff, care to comment again about Attali and Lacan?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am

I wish I could see Bikini Kill. And I just learned that I'll miss Sleater-Kinney: I'll be at a dance show. The downside of having booked 49 tickets for next season (including 10 in November!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am

The closest thing I expect to see to Ron is Marshall Brodeen commemorated in the Chicago Television Gallery. I think TV Magic Cards were marketed across the country.

I remember odd treacly tunes at night's end, but not "High Flight" per se.

@UM maybe they only did it on some Boston channel i used to watch. it's a poem by John Magee that they used to play over visuals of fighter planes soaring thru the stratosphere. it's weird, i can actually recite the thing having seen it on signoff so many times
