Friend of mine taught me the etymology of "helicopter." We tend to assume it's heli + copter. In fact, it's helico + pter. Look it up.

i won crazyass prizes last marathon. 9 vinyl albums (2 double lps: Coltrane and Sun Ra) and 2 cds, + i was psyched for some rad premiums. the shit was stolen (probably by a wfmu volunteer, as the usps folks wouldn't have known what was in there) and the only premium i got is the what was music t.

@coelacanth: dude.. that sucks. You contacted Joe and he said it shipped or what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40am
Marcel M:

Glad at least the best thing made it... heh...heh.....
  12:41am
rw:

coel, maybe there's a separate package on the way. I still haven't received anything but am pretty psyched about the What Was Music T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42am
coelacanth∅:

yeah it shipped. i got an empty box with tape all over it saying "received in damaged condition".
the box is not damaged though. someone took the contents out.
  12:43am
rw:

Ugh. That blows. Sorry, man. Maybe I'll forward some of my swag on to you if it ever arrives!
  12:45am
Dean:

I would love to acquire this Unexamine, but they don't do hardware except for cassettes. I have a cassette player...but I don't use it.
  12:45am
rw:

Weirdest thing is they didn't take that T shirt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45am

Joe might send me the dj premiums - hopefully including the prize warehouse cd by Jeff Mullen (noise & syrup) but there's nothing he can do about the prizes.

shitheads happen.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50am
coelacanth∅:

Marcel i just think that because after leaving the station no one would know what's in there. packages pass through their hands a zillion times/day. they wouldn't target this package unless they knew of the contents.
(even then i doubt the usps employees would ever take a risk like that)
  12:50am
rw:

Damn, coel. Sorry, man. Glad you got the soft stuff and are happy with it!

Speaking of full blast, I heard Brotzmann's Full Blast at a tiny venue in Berkeley some time around '05. Holy goddamn. They were solid, loud, LOUD, utterly on top of it.

they're just dinosaurs with forward-facing eyes
Avatar 1:10am
Hams:

i'll have to go back and hear what you had to say about season 3 of TWIN PEAKS. it was the first output of lynch that i just thoroughly disliked. i was frustrated by the whole thing. i liked the arm wrestling scene and the episode where big ed showed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12am
coelacanth∅:

and some of them are computers with poorer sight than any living thing (as all computers have poorer sight than any living thing...even living things without eyes)
Avatar 1:12am
Hams:

i had an owl about run me off the road one night down in northeast georgia. was flying straight towards me.
Avatar 1:13am
Hams:

..that makes sense then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am
coelacanth∅:

owls are beautiful and awesome; but yeah, not any smarter than any other bird.
they're birdbrains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am
Marcel M:

Yeah Owls have such big eyes that are so powerful that there is not much room left in their heads for a brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am
Marcel M:

I loved it Hams... One of my favorite pieces of art across the board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15am
coelacanth∅:

haha is that what it is?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16am
coelacanth∅:

but crows are smart (relatively) and they have little heads
maybe they're like Einstein and they actually use a bigger % of the brain that's available to them.
Avatar 1:17am
Hams:

ah. yeah, a bunch of folks do. it was weird just really not liking something by lynch, i don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18am
Marcel M:

I went to a falconry place once that had an owl and thats what the person said. She said they go up in trees to hunt, and like, space out and get distracted when they hear a noise and then just stare off for a really long time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am
Marcel M:

so its like impossible when it gets out. She said it will like get ready to jump fly down to them, and then like hear a twig snap, look in another direction, and then just stare off for 10 mins lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am
coelacanth∅:

hahaha!
...birdbrains!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am
Marcel M:

Yeah I think the fact that they are dumb makes them even more adorable and likable... I guess I like dumb stuff tho. Makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am
coelacanth∅:

maybe they're into the edibles
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am
Marcel M:

That would make me like them even more
Avatar 1:22am
Hams:

wow, that's hilarious. that's like me dove hunting as a kid with my dad. i thought owls were known to be really good hunters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am
coelacanth∅:

they are extraordinary hunters. excellent vision and incredible speed. and vewy vewy qwiet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
Marcel M:

Yeah they are great hunters but only that apparently. Like, crows can choose certain things they like, and go after them. And steal from people. With like a preference. Which makes them "smart". But yeah owl vision is crazy. Some birds can see heat trails.. pretty sure owls can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am
Marcel M:

I don't know if I'm making any sense. Apologies if not.
  1:30am
rw:

Hey kids, I gotta go. Not getting much done here. Thanks for the sounds Marcel! Night all! owl!

MM, You're making sense.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am

wow so i didn't know that about heat trails.
that would be infrared, like some reptiles.
they do have advanced night vision (obviously) probably an evolutionary adaptation to decrease competition with the other raptors
Avatar 1:55am
tak:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56am
Marcel M:

"Owls have very large eyes for their size, 2.2 times greater than the average for birds of the same weight,[9] and positioned at the front of the head. The eyes have a field overlap of 50–70%, giving better binocular vision than for diurnal birds of prey (overlap 30–50%).[69] The tawny owl's retina has about 56,000 light-sensitive rods per square millimetre (36 million per square inch); although earlier claims that it could see in the infrared part of the spectrum have been dismissed"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57am
Marcel M:

Ok so not true apparently. But I do know some birds can see shit we can't. What exactly? I don't know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am
coelacanth∅:

maybe it's a matter of what they do with that shit.
like people see shit - like a packed ocean liner heading straight for an enormous iceberg; or a corporate-feeding monster with a gaping mouth and rows of sharkteeth smiling and saying i'm your friend trust me... and somehow still don't see it
whereas an owl might see dinner and, after spacing out for 10 or 20 minutes pondering a tree branch, be like hey that's dinner - whoosh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15am

okay i must depart
