I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

@rw: same here. I have a feeling I'll end up cllicky-starring the whole show
I think Akuphone is a French label based not far from my favorite venue, but I'm likely to be confusing it with another label

We feel the ones that are 6+ magnitude, last night, we could feel the 7.1-it a was a long and gentle moving sensation, like being on water, at first it feels like having a dizzy spell. The epicenter is over a hundred miles from where we are.

Good morning Mayuko! There were 1,272 earthquakes in California in the past 24 hours. And to put a good flavor topping of shit on everything, the air in Los Angeles is toxic with smoke from all the fireworks.

I was wondering what the Blue Stockings show title was about, but with the added clue of Seito I think I get it now

"Bluestocking (青鞜 Seitō) was Japan’s first all-women literary magazine created in 1911 by a group of five women. Haru Raichō Hiratsuka, Yasumochi Yoshiko, Mozume Kazuko, Kiuchi Teiko, and Nakano Hatsuko founded the Japanese Bluestocking Society (青鞜社 Seitō-sha) to promote the equal rights of women through literature and education. The magazine they developed was designed to articulate women’s self-awareness and the gender-based societal limitations they faced, but its promotion of early feminist beliefs through controversial publications caused it to be banned by Japanese kokutai for being “disruptive to society”. Bluestocking was in print only in Japan from 1911–1916 but the response it caused is credited as prompting the pioneering movement of Japanese feminism."

The music compilation Seitō from Akuphone:
"Seitō {青鞜} gathers Japanese female artists from various electronic and experimental music fields.... this collection recorded between 2017 and 2019 exposes the richness of the contemporary Japanese underground music scene. The title refers to a cult feminist magazine printed in Japan in the 1910s... All tracks issued for the first time."

the bluestockings were Victorian intellectuals & aristocrats, too! the name was non-gender-specific at first, but women came to own the term.

From how I was able to feel the Virginia earthquake in, what, 2011, from ~340 miles away, I was all the more worried for folks' safety and sense of calm within similar range and closer to the two CA earthquakes.
Avatar 12:22pm

Yes, Linda is right, that's where the Japanese women from 1911 took the name from for their magazine.

She's doing very well. Let's us know when she's gotta go and she's only 10 weeks old. So far my cat will only investigate from a distance when she's in her crate. As soon as we take her out (on leash) he goes off into another room. Yes, on my toes! Keeping my mind off the fact my daughter is in London for 6 weeks! Nervous dad here.

@Otis @1:06 Nice! The label used the same artwork from the original Seito magazine cover - think that would look great on LP. The flower illustration on today's playlist was made by one of the artists who did the magazine covers.

sad that 99% of people (my guess is in most of the world) think of yoko ono first, if not only, when presented with the idea of female japanese "experimental" artists.

@coel: I don't think so. I don't think most people think of her as an artist (sadly, and to their loss). I think most would draw a blank, with Yayoi Kusama maybe registering, and possibly Ikue Mori on the music side
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm

Also, yeah, I clicked starred the whole show

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm
coelacanth∅:

i know few japanese female artists by name, to be honest, but the first one comes to mind is usually Yoshimi. (but i don't call any of it "experimental". they're not experimenting, in general; they know basically what they're going for. the only experiment is to see how many people care about it.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm

The first time I saw Nisennenmondai was on the Destination Tokyo tour. They got there late because of snow delays, and the opening noise band (Lubriphikatttor) had to play for close to 40 minutes when they usually stop at 15 or so, until they made it to the venue. They didn't have time for a sound check, yet they blew my mind
