Hi Gary. Was Jean-Michel considered a French Pink Floyd/Hawkwind kind of thing? I really missed the moment with him. The band picture makes me think of a Hipgnosis sci-fi mash up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm
Gary:

It's funny because I don't remember any of the hype around Jarre or how I would have even known about him, growing up in a town of <2000 people, but I *do* remember having a similar-to-Pink-Floyd-listening-feeling when I first heard Oxygène

Closer to Tangerine Dream maybe? & 'New Age' as decades went by...Soundtrack?...'Hearts of Space' eventually...

True, but I was ignorant of Tangerine Dream as a kid

Oxygene was a monster hit of an LP. it is def. in the Tangerine Dream mold, but it sold much bigger than any T. Dream, i think. it was kind of the weird electronic record you'd have along with Tubular Bells

This is interesting, like many aspects of French pop culture, Americans seem to be a little hazy about the how, why, what, where. Plastic Bertrand anyone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm

This one more like Chanson (?) ...like Leonard Cohen sort of an incursion of it into our awareness almost...

I remember hearing about Magma when I watched the Jodorowsky's Dune documentary. Apparently Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted them to compose the music for the Harkonnens.

Alejandro Jodorowsky wanted Pink Floyd to compose music for the House Atreides and Magma composing for House Harkonnen.

Magma - their own Language - quite an involved thing...never knew a lot about it!
Avatar 8:11pm

Avatar 8:14pm

Here's the language they used: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Gary:

Oh, right! Zeuhl isn't the language, it's the word for the kind of music!
  8:17pm

Heya Gary et al ... Magma is French and made up a phonetic language. Pretty odd, unless you like prog as much as I do.

I confess sometimes I can't find the groove in rap sung with an accent à la Pepé Le Pew. Somehow, French punk didn't pose that problem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Gary:

Oh man, that is not a problem that I have, Dean :)

Gary, I agree about French punk. But I love the jazz scat stuff. Double Six of Pairs (?), French Rat Race, I find amazing.

Even here I find the French a bit off-putting. The articulation doesn't settle into the music, somehow. Maybe the fit peaked with Marc-Antoine Charpentier?
