Hi Otis!! :-)

DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm starting out heavy today ;-)
Avatar 4:05pm
Otis Fodder:

Wow, I get to listen on a Friday now to you and Don and Rich. Last few weeks I have been out on Friday evenings as shows. Tonight it's all about music, cooking, cleaning and music.
Avatar 4:05pm
Mr Fab:

Freak out in a moon-age daydream. Oh yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Oo! Watcha cooking? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello Mr Fab! :-)
Avatar 4:07pm
Otis Fodder:

Summertime Heavy is perfect right now. It's hot here in Montreal, so much while I was out today we had a 2 hour blackout taking down 3500+ spots.

Tonight will make black beans and rice (southern soul food style), later though, after Rich's show. Going to snack on fruit and cheese in a bit with a glass of white wine.
Avatar 4:08pm
Otis Fodder:

Waiting to cook in a hot kitchen until the sun is just going down past 8pm ET. Cooler that way. Too hot to even think about cooking now. Hot damn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That sounds delicious!!! I had homemade chilli yesterday, so today was rice and a veg assortment for me :-) Radio food ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's been raining all day but we're supposed to get a thunderstorm to really break the humidity. It peaked at 96% today. Gulp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Heavy indeed!
Avatar 4:11pm
Otis Fodder:

If I did it really right, I'd use the crock pot for a few hours after letting my beans soak overnight, like for tomorrow, but I'm going to shortcut it all, I think... or I just might prep for tomorrow's dinner and just do some sort of tapas with what I have in the fridge. Fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

'ello 'opey! ;-)
Avatar 4:12pm

I love making chili in my crock pot. I always let that simmer for the day (or overnight). Oh wow, so good.

Mr Fab:

i was a fan of the space program as a kid - one of my uncles used to be an engineer at an aerospace company, back when that was LA's major industry. I could expound at great length on the technicalities of Apollo. I won't, but I could!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My friend says I cook like I'm DJing. lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm

@Mr Fab - WOW!!! I would have loved to see all that!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:18pm

That does sound fascinating, Mr. Fab! I'm down with science.

I was just thinking that as well, GG! This song is making me feel a bit misty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

I'll admit it, I still get teary eyed whenever I listen to Blackstar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Rich in Washington:

His passing was just days before my 50th birthday. Both those events hit me like a ton of proverbial bricks. I still haven't recovered from Bowie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I was going to play my stylophone on the radio today and then completely forgot. Sigh.

Avatar 4:30pm
Mr Fab:

And here I was thinking "Moonage Daydream"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Rich in Washington:

Me too, Hopey. It was the last record I remember going into some big box retail store and buying a brand new album - and the first in quite some time.
Avatar 4:31pm
Linda Lee:

as far as i can tell, this isn't a Bowie-less world at all. he's still here for us as he always was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Bowie died about two weeks before my best friend - one of our last full conversations was about Bowie. That was a shite year. Ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm

In fact, I was listening to WFMU and learned about it live on the chat board.

@Linda : My school principal when I was 5 - in 1969 - was a 60 something chap by the name of Neil Armstrong and we all worshipped him :-)

And at least we didn't have to worry about chocolate on the ceiling.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Hurrah, the Bonzos!
Avatar 4:57pm
Linda Lee:

what a delightful memory ~ even though you were terrified.
me, i remember the moon walk best. how surreal it was. i saw it as theater, frankly. no conception of what they'd actually done. i was 9.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:58pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think it was the first time I was ever aware that we were all joined in something. That everyone was watching.
Avatar 4:58pm
Linda Lee:

it was just a unique sort of art piece.
Avatar 4:58pm
Linda Lee:

sure. that's right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It looked like a lot of fun too - all that bouncing about :-)
Avatar 4:59pm
Linda Lee:

it really did. didn't particularly want to do it, though. the gear looked heavy & they had no faces!
Avatar 5:01pm
Linda Lee:

where were The Poets from, GG? That's a special accent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Scotland :-) I *think* Glasgow specifically.
Avatar 5:02pm
Mr Fab:

i saw an actual space capsule in a museum and couldn't believe how small and uncomfortable it looked. i was flabbergasted that anyone would willingly allow themselves to be squeezed into this tin can, sit on top of a missile and shoot into the unknown. That is just off-the-scale bravery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:03pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

With all the equipment as well? Wow. That's insane. Why is it so small?
Avatar 5:04pm
Linda Lee:

ooh! paint the moon, the stars and the sun black!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
Rich in Washington:

our science museum growing up, OMSI, used to have a reproduction Gemini capsule that you could sit in. It was fine for little kids, but adult sized people were stuffed in like sardines.
Avatar 5:04pm
Linda Lee:

ah, sure! thought it might be Scotland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm
Rich in Washington:

I still want a space capsule for a music listening station.
Avatar 5:06pm
Linda Lee:

i'd guess the size is just about reducing mass. my idea of hell, frankly :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The British space programme consisted of some very tall ladders. lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Tall ladders and stout hot air balloons ;-)
  5:08pm
Martinibomb:

not just nixon but Kennedy getting killed kinda kicked conspiracy into high gear here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:08pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Actually, yes. Very true!
Avatar 5:09pm
Linda Lee:

in the 50s horror was very much concerned about nuclear power, though. horrible monsters birthed by nuclear blasts. havoc. it was also about conformity & 'the other' invading the sacred communal space.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Bye everybody. Hitting the sack overhere. Catch you at the archives!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Yes! Invasion of the Body Snatchers - the threat of emotionless Russia and Communism, and all that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Linda, very true! Invasion of the Body Snatchers is a prime example.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Both versions of that film still scare the living shit out of me. <shudder>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Night, Jan!!!! Thank you for being here :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Hopey and I have *hive mind* - bwah-ha-ha!!!
Avatar 5:11pm
Linda Lee:

yes, exactly! & sometimes you had a terrible combination of the nuclear havoc & the other invading the community ~ in the 'Night Of The Living Dead'! early 60s, but still the 50s really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Perhaps we're actually pod people, GG. (eek!)
Avatar 5:12pm
Linda Lee:

just checked. it was 1968! shame on me.
Avatar 5:14pm
Mr Fab:

George Romero admitted that each of his zombie films were reflective of the times they were made. "Night of the Living Dead" being influenced by the civil rights movement with it's doomed black leader.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I've mistakenly attributed Shawn Phillips to Joe Meek in the next talky bit. Whoops! :-)
Avatar 5:17pm
Linda Lee:

funny, but i find the hero's race only incidental to the story. i think it's striking that way. his character isn't about being black ~ though the civil rights movement is very much happening behind the film. sure.
Avatar 5:18pm
Linda Lee:

i like this SDG track much better than the popular hits ~ which are still excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The SDG had a lovely little second wind of a later career I think :-)
Avatar 5:20pm

yes they did!

  5:24pm
Martinibomb:

Whenever I think of the space race, whitey on the moon comes to mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's strange to think that there are at least, what - two? three? generations who have no personal connection to the space programme in terms of memories or anything like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Whitey on the Moon is a classic. I think Dave the Spazz played it on his moon tribute show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
Hopey Sockmonkey:

Who knew there were so many moon songs??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I forgot to mention that my daughter loves the McDonalds in Roswell. Pictures of it, I mean. :-)
Avatar 5:27pm
Linda Lee:

ha! no way i'm this good at mult-tasking.
that is sort of wild, about your daughter.
i'm afraid i was never super excited about 'outer space' ~ i was the sort of kid who saw space exploration as irrelevant to our troubles ~ but sure, 'space age' was very much the thing in design, in music, in clothing, in tv, movies. really incredibly fruitful as a concept. not so much the actuality of it, which was rather dry, but the potential!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I remember when I played this now! Someone commented that the guitar sounded like "Come As You Are"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm reading the Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein right now kinda fun one
Avatar 5:30pm
Linda Lee:

fabulous!! it's a shame they vend that stuff out of it.
Avatar 5:30pm
Mr Fab:

Well, we've never stopped going into space, hence your cell phones, GPS, weather tracking etc. It's become somewhat commonplace. But yeah, manned space travel isn't too important anymore. It's just too difficult and dangerous. Unmanned probes get all the glory now. (Go Mars rovers!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I have to confess that the only Heinlein I've ever read is Stranger but I loved that so I really should read more.
Avatar 5:32pm
Linda Lee:

i must say here that "Telstar" is one of the first records I liked. i'm not sure i could even talk yet..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm

I did not just snigger at "unmanned probes". hahahaha. I am five.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Telstar just says "the future" to me like nothing else in music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:33pm

Avatar 5:33pm

Hopey, i checked out how many Moon songs are in the Sheena stream, and think it's about 75 or so. Was quite surprised. i might get in the broadcaster and trigger a bunch of 'em manually this weekend. if ppl aren't sick of moon songs by then...

Avatar 5:35pm

@Rich in Washington ~ yes, it did. otherworldly sounds. what so much popular music went for, too. it was OK to stretch sounds in pop after Telstar.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:35pm

Apologies to non-Brits if I sounded horrifically violent about Cadburys! lol. I could quite happily devour one. There you go.
