Too many giants are leaving us here in New Orleans. I know you pride yourself on only playing 45s but I hope you make an exception for Cardova(unless you have a bootleg 45).
Avatar 9:50pm
Kris Holmes:

I don't think I have Cardova handy......lemme check
Avatar 9:50pm
Kris Holmes:

but yeah too many :-(
Avatar 9:51pm
Kris Holmes:

tonight is several formats
Avatar 9:51pm
Kris Holmes:

Cardova will be played, off original LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Larry played it last night as well before he lost power after the halfway mark after only having had his power restored shortly before he started broadcasting. He managed to finish recording the show on his battery backup but we couldn’t hear it. That’s dedication.

Danny missing your show to go to the festival was a good choice

I’ve recovered from the hectic weekend.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Little Danny:

Hadn't realized there was Art Neville involvement on it
Avatar 10:22pm
geezerette:

so HOT...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s for a movie of the same name with Jayne Mansfield
Avatar 10:23pm
Kris Holmes:

That's him singing "She can't help it, the girl can't help it"
Avatar 10:24pm
geezerette:

Anyone who hasn't seen title sequence of the movie should try to, incredible. (GCHI)
Avatar 10:26pm
Kris Holmes:

You can really hear where Aaron learned his melismas from
Avatar 10:29pm
geezerette:

These are so damn good! Much more aware of Aaron, so thanks for playing these wonderful recordings, Kris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’ll respectfully disagree with you about Brian’s guitar playing in the Funky Meters but I wasn’t at your show.
Avatar 10:38pm
Kris Holmes:

It was seriously a bit much. I don't know if it was that Brian guy.
Avatar 10:38pm
Kris Holmes:

Would have been roughly 10 years back
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Most likely it was him. Was he a middle aged Caucasian dude?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Little Danny:

Cool version of "Bo Diddley"! New one to me.
Avatar 10:40pm
Kris Holmes:

yes, as a guitarist & a huge Meters fan I guess I was expecting the guitarist to not put so much of himself into the classics, but whatever, I am glad I saw them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
Little Danny:

Presumably the Meters behind Art here?
Avatar 10:41pm
Kris Holmes:

Yep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Hey! Just oozed back in the house.I LOVE The Meters, but Aaron is the only member of the Neville dynasty I've seen live. With George Clinton and The Black Eyed Peas no less.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Little Danny:

Always casually hoped any of those early Josie LPs would land in my lap. Still nothing.
Avatar 10:43pm
Kris Holmes:

I saw Aaron with Mavis Staples & The Blind Boys of Alabama, probably a better setting?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

Not probably, but most certainly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

I might have to change my name to Liver Splash.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Got confused with the other brothers. The Allmans
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm
Little Danny:

Speaking of the Meters (and Eddie Bo), I would love to know the relationship btwn funky NOLA drummers Ziggy Modeliste and James Black, and who inspired whom
Avatar 10:54pm
Kris Holmes:

Yeah, so many band names, so much stuff to remember. I was pulling records this afternoon for the show & just losing my mind because there is so much!
Avatar 10:54pm
Kris Holmes:

I feel like James Black came earlier
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
chresti:

!!! Funky Belly!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Definitely. He recorded with Nat Adderly in 1962.
Avatar 10:57pm
Kris Holmes:

I wish I could drum like these dudes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Little Danny:

Definitely had more of a professional pedigree, but "Hook & Sling" (the first "funky" James Black session?) and the early Meters records were seemingly contemporaneous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Little Danny:

Y'all are probably right tho. Black was certainly more established at that time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Lover and a friend was a few years earlier. James Black was a serous jazz drummer before moving to r&b
  10:59pm

Tuned! RIP the great Art Neville
Avatar 11:00pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Little Danny:

@Matt: Oh yes. And now I'm flashing on Black's drumming on Yusef Lateef's "Sister Mamie" as well
Avatar 11:01pm
Kris Holmes:

With Kiwi pianist Mike Nock!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm

Avatar 11:56pm

I have not read it. I have a like/hate relationship with David Ritz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
