I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Good afternoon, my radio family fred and james!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm

I once awakened from a nap with FMU in the background and thought my AC was indeed on the fritz!

my headphone cable has been making this sound all week, but I love it :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm

One might also confuse this with sound recorded in an airline cabin. Good afternoon, Mayuko and listenerds.

:googles Rev. Tanimoto:: Oh goodness.

"the bomb was dropped" Interesting use of the passive voice.

The cheer in his voice at "Where were you when the bomb fell?" is jarring!

The music behind the narrative was disturbing

I wonder if that choice not to show their faces was theirs, or something imposed.

how in the world did we have enough technology to design an atom bomb in 1940’s. seems almost impossible

Play Vertigo sponsored by Prell shampoo
  12:24pm
Dave B.:

Was shampoo solid in the past?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm
listener james from westwood:

There is no graceful segue from atomic war survivors to selling shampoo, but she gets a medal for trying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm
coelacanth∅:

i used prell gel - in a tube like toothpaste, for all my teenage years. dried out my hair.
  12:25pm
P-90:

I’m looking forward to some fine Prell product premiums at the next Marathon.
  12:25pm
Dave B.:

I mean why do were they emphasizing the liquidity of Prell?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm
listener james from westwood:

rbrt: It's stunning to think our phones could have done the calculations needed for both the Manhattan Project and Bletchley Park in like half a day.

could of been like a bar of soap?

It wouldn't surprise me if Prell were once solid. You can still buy solid soap designed for hair.

I had a feeling this was Negativland!! (Er, rectangular.)

By odd coincidence, I'll be playing my synthpop Spotify mix while cleaning house after show, which includes, among other hits, OMD's "Enola Gay."

@ljfw: What amazes me is how most of that computing power goes to waste. I'd bet 80% at least of what computers/phones do is useless. And I'm not saying that about uses, just that increasing power lead to sloppy coding
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm
coelacanth∅:

that's why, even though of course people making their way to earth's moon could easily have been faked, it doesn't make sense. i mean, why wouldn't we have the ability to get to the moon by the early 60s? the reason to fake it has to be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

it was a fake reason to fake a fake faked moon landing

chresti and Franco in sf: you must be on the east side, from my place on Potrero Hill i can see a big looming fog bank creeping this way from the ocean, eeeyyyiiikkees!
  12:46pm
P-90:

It’s called “Liquid Prelll” because like many shampoos in those days, it originally came as a gel in a toothpaste-like tube. So “Liquid Prell” was an additional product introduced as a liquid in a bottle.

Is that Terrine aka Claire from Amiens, France?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm
coelacanth∅:

i loved that fog when i was there.
north of sf (north of arcata actually) i slept in my car at a little-used look-out point, and would awaken to the sound of lots & lots -& lots of sea lions making a racket at the bottom of the cliff; but i never saw them. i'd eat then paint my car (had an "art car") until mid-afternoon...still never saw those animals down there.

I really like this Noah Creshevsky track. Of course very appropriate for this stream
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm
fred:

Is this from Brazil?
Avatar 1:33pm
Mayuko:

@coelacanth∅ Japanese wikipedia says Mr. Tanimoto did suffer from the radiation sickness but miraculously recovered. It's pretty incredible since he was so close to the ground zero! Also people sometimes developed atomic bomb illness over very long periods of time, like 10 years 20 years, or even 70 years after the bomb, so some people didn't have visible symptom right after.
Avatar 1:34pm

@fred yup!

45* apparently just backed out of a nuclear treaty with the Russians (surprised?) and plans to develop more new missiles. Who voted for that?
Avatar 1:44pm
Mayuko:

@rbrt "Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised Aug. 5 to review criteria for recognizing whether hibakusha are eligible for special medical allowances. Of the 251,834 people certified as hibakusha as of March 31, the government has recognized only 2,242 as having radiation illnesses. Abe made the promise the day before the 62nd anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing. (Kyodo)" a piece of news from almost 10 years ago.
