Benny Carter holds the record for the oldest jazz musician I've seen that I wasn't sad I went to see him. He was making fabulous music into his 90s, used to catch him often at The West End. (And he was really sweet as well. I was looking at some Fake Books someone was selling outside of the club, and he came up to me and had an encouraging conversation with me. Not that I was a serious musician, but he waa so nice).

I think French is far more gendered than English. You wouldn't have a way out with "cousin", it would be a "cousin/cousine" choise. Then again, we assign gender to everything, so maybe it's been overused into meaninglessness. (Sadly, no)
Avatar 11:13am
Linda Lee:

love it!! :-)
i don't have much bio family either. how nice to consider that potential. in isolation, as i tend to feel now, it's a real lifesaver. but! that means you have to be in a place where you can find your new family. so i should come down out of the mountains!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14am
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

fred: Lantinx folx have been playing with the similarly-gendered Spanish for years and coming up with some creative solutions. My sweetie tells me that Hebrew is even more intensely gendered than French and Spanish.
Avatar 11:14am

Avatar 11:17am
Linda Lee:

there's the kick.. how do ya say these things?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
fred:

@GST: We have something called inclusive writing here where the "cousin" example would be "cousin.e", plural "cousin.e.s". Problem here too is how do you pronounce that?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Linda Lee: apparently in Hebrew the entire grammatic structure is different depending on if you're talking to a male or a female. But we recently met a gender activist who is a native Hebrew speaker, so we're going to find out how to wrangle that.
Avatar 11:17am
Linda Lee:

ho ma gosh!
Avatar 11:18am

how do non-binary people tangle with that one?
constantly, i'd' guess.
Avatar 11:19am

what we have in play is *potential*. that's what keeps us involved in it, yes?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

a wise teacher encouraged folx to listen to our imaginations with "joke mind." The open-minded, "ok, and then what?" that allows us to enjoy a good joke.

Hey, I love the conversation. Don't have much to add, but agree that a light(-hearted) touch is really useful when wading into unknown language waters. Never hurts to ask, nicely, too.

@LL! re intentional family: my brother and sister were adopted. I'm white, my brother is Asian, my sister is black. Done wonders to open my mind, but it also means I'm often labeled a racist

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am

@LL: Especially with Asians (my sister was adopted much later in my early teens), having grown up with my brother means it can get really hard for me to tell whether someone is Asian or white. To a lesser extent, Asian or black or white. I'm by no means color-blind, but it's something I have to work on, because it comes out as denying someone's identity

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am
Jeff Golick:

Bye, @hyde! Happy lunching!
Avatar 11:43am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am

@LL: It's what GST just said: I should respect how people self-identify
Avatar 11:44am
Linda Lee:

yes, right. 'race' doesn't actually exist, biologically. just a convenient precept for 19th century industrialists to use as a wedge between workers who might be allies against exploitation. so here we are, assuming it has a biological basis.
