"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

hi, John and folks. back in the late 80s - early 90s, we'd have called this jazz Fusion, perhaps. i remember being on a Yellowjackets and Spyro Gyra kick back then, catching all the live shows I could find. because live is where these cats shine.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
coelacanth∅:

the term "jazz", before being applied to music, meant "mess", essentially, and was applied to improvisational music because of it's lack of prearranged structure...'sounded "messy" to traditional or classical music listeners. "what is this jazz?"
- so, as jazz is by it's original definition improvisational, isn't "improvisational jazz" redundant?

@coel:don't forget, around the turn of the 20th c, jass was African-American slang in New Orleans for flatulence, Buddy Bolden liked the term and used it to say he played in a jass band.....

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
G:

Many fake stories about the origin of jass/jazz. It's actually been researched better in the last 10-20 years from written citations. It started as a sexual term for sperm or life-force (compare jizz); then became a baseball term for a ball with weird movement that was hard for hitters to hit (jass/jazz ball); and then became a term for improvised music not formally orchestrated and followed strictly

@Ken: People here in New Orleans mention that a fair amount. Maybe the Mormons was not a sexy basketball team name.

@ KRHP, the owner of the team makes that call and he left for Utah in a middle of the night type deal

@ken from hyde park. yeah...especially considering that Utah is one of the least jazzy states. Mormons aren’t really known for their improvising skills, are they? maybe with sod housing and marital arrangements, i guess.
