someone i've known for several years and with whom wfmu has surely been mentioned in conversation many dozens of times was surprised a few months ago when i mentioned that none (or practically none) of whmu's programs are pre-recorded.

David, someone has to be hall monitor, it might as well be you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm
Webhamster Henry:

@coelocanthø - some of the Sheena streams are recorded, but the DJs sit in and hang out on the chatboard. So the DJs are live even if the shows aren't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm
Webhamster Henry:

We were going to have a New Music Fest in the Mine at the end of the month, but the timing didn't work out. Robert Dick was supposed to be one of the artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
coelacanth∅:

Henry i think that's sometimes the case with ichiban. certainly sometimes. and sometimes they're not even hanging around the comments.
someone deleted a few of my posts a few weeks ago on one show when i realised it was pre-recorded and commented about it - like they were intending to fool people and i'd busted them!
pretty silly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

Coel, even the robot programmer lady at WFMU is good. I was driving around the other day listening to a local NPR station that prides itself on it's 'eclectic' music programming, HA! it was anything but eclectic! It sounded like, well, a robot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
fred:

Good afternoon David, Ruth and listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39pm
coelacanth∅:

...and i figure Hearty White is pre-recorded, at least a lot of the time. obviously partially pre-recorded sometimes, at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
coelacanth∅:

robot programmer lady? you mean the owl thing?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:41pm
david w:

I believe the live DJ thing is kind of a FMU gospel. And certainly a priority of Dr. Schulkind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

That voice. I don't know what the hell it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
coelacanth∅:

the night owl. i think it's a male programming that female voice. not sure.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
david w:

fred! hello! I got swept up in this robot lady chat....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
coelacanth∅:

but yeah the music's excellent, but i can't listen to a robot talking; or support the concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:51pm
Franco Twinkie:

Me neither. I hate taking cars or appliances - "Hal. I can't do that."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

Owlsun is programmed by Dave Amels, a/k/a DA the DJ. Every once in a while, he'll update it a little. It can pick up some cues from chat board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
Webhamster Henry:

The name is a kind of parody of "Allison Steele, the Night Bird"
Avatar 4:02pm
Mary Wing:

What's all this about a robot programmer lady?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm

It's the overnights on the Ichiban stream:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm

...and the disturbing facsimile of a human voice comes on frequently, every 3-4 songs.
can't do it.
it represents one of the biggest problems with our world.
Avatar 4:24pm

Ah, interesting. I had no idea that the Ichiban stream had a robot for overnights.

Okay, there are worse things than an automated voice: A leaf blower when it's a hundred degrees outside.
Avatar 4:28pm
Mary Wing:

The dog in the building next to mine that yaps all day while it's owner is at work. That's super disturbing to me; I should record it and play it back in the evening when the owner is home but it would probably drive the dog crazy, heh.

A coworker wanted to customize a pair of pepper robots so that they could engage in rap battles. He was denied funding because of a lack of "positive social impact"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

Have any of you ever heard Shut Up Little Man? I would not be happy if I had neighbors like that.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
david w:

Does fred mean "rapper robots" but spellcheck jumped on it? Or is this a thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
coelacanth∅:

i've had neighbors that ruined significant sized chunks of most days for me. i did record some of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Franco Twinkie:

Ha! I was wondering the same thing, David.
Avatar 4:37pm
Mary Wing:

Pepper robots are a thing, now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
fred:

Pepper is a kind of robot: en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm
coelacanth∅:

and yeah leaf blowers don't even sound good. it's just unpleasant noise doing an almost-always useless task.
at least most lawn mowers' sounds have some substance. (yes i'm serious)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
coelacanth∅:

i had to tell the new groundskeepers at my sister's house not to blow the grass clippings around after mowing.
what a stupid concept.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Franco Twinkie:

Pepper Robots are made by SoftBank. I worked on a SoftBank TV commercial with Cameron Diaz. She is not a robot, but she is very tall.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
david w:

I'd like to have a pepper blower, and a lawn, and a tree... alas...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
coelacanth∅:

i like this about the pepper robot: "available as a research and educational robot for schools, colleges and universities to teach programming and conduct research into human-robot interactions."
that's like having an instruction manual to teach you how to use the instruction manual.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm

Have any of you ever seen the Gumby cartoon called Robot Rumpus? Gumpy just want some help with the yard work, so he enlists the robots, who tear up his yard and wreck the house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm

is Cameron Diaz as cool as i have the impression she is? (which is cool)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm

Cameron is to cool for words.

fred it reminds me of the commonly prescribed drug for asthma several decades ago, theophilin (sp) which relieved the symptoms but adversely affected magnesium absorbtion - increasing the magnesium deficiency that probably resulted in the asthma in the first place. the tablets also had yellow dye in them, a well-known asthma attack trigger.
