That "we can play whatever we want" reference during the transition made me think about almost 50 years ago when I was doing a show (Changes) on WFMU and we were struggling with censorship and a repressive station manager; the opposite of the benevolent Staish, Ken! It was a different kind of struggle and ultimately many of the Freeform hosts like myself and others were either thrown off the station, relegated to "news department" or left in despair or after Upsala College graduation or quitting time.

	♥ 10:34am Ike: @deborah, to be fair, my understanding is that the morning show is the one and only exception, and that all other shows are programmed 100% by their hosts (who are volunteers, unlike Clay who is paid). The idea seems to be to make an "ultimate gateway show" for morning drive time to pull more listeners into WFMU as a whole. I don't think this is a bad premise, but IMHO it needs to be watched carefully so that it doesn't become a bigger creature than what it's servicing.

	10:55am deborah: @Ike. Yes, agreed. As a longtime WFMU listener, follower, and radio geek-journalism prof., I have heard and studied the changes in "Listener Sponsored" and "Public Radio." (I am not going on an academic tangent.) WFMU has not gone the quasi commercial path and perhaps that accounts for its independence. WAKE serves its function; it is a cross between the WFMU oeuvre, with tinges of prior decade morning radio, including the great Herb Oscar Anderson on WABC. It's just sometimes the music doesn't match Clay's persona. Guess demographics and listener analysis will ultimately show results. I know about WFMU volunteers; I was one and hope to return in some capacity.

Let's say I'd never heard the song, or the Eagles. Even so: He looks like a thundering sleazebucket! Look at him! What a factory-wrapped douche! He looks like a slick old slimeball who hits on 20-somethings and tries to get you to buy into a pyramid scheme or a failing Blimpie franchise. Many log in around 9:00 a.m. to complain about Matt/Clay "pre-garbage" talk, and threaten or announce to listen to another station. From ~9:15 to 11:00 a.m., they issue prospective complaints about Felder and threaten to listen to another station. From 11:00 to ~11:10 a.m., they complain in real-time about Felder and announce offerings on alternative stations. From ~11:10 to noon, they retrospectively complain about Felder and crow about superior selections on alternative stations. Save for creative/humorous insults, it seems like an exhausting routine. And I'm saying this as someone who basically has commentboard autism and usually brings nothing to any conversation other than "ME LIKE THIS SONG!"

That "we can play whatever we want" reference during the transition made me think about almost 50 years ago when I was doing a show (Changes) on WFMU and we were struggling with censorship and a repressive station manager; the opposite of the benevolent Staish, Ken! It was a different kind of struggle and ultimately many of the Freeform hosts like myself and others were either thrown off the station, relegated to "news department" or left in despair or after Upsala College graduation or quitting time.

	♥ 10:34am Ike: @deborah, to be fair, my understanding is that the morning show is the one and only exception, and that all other shows are programmed 100% by their hosts (who are volunteers, unlike Clay who is paid). The idea seems to be to make an "ultimate gateway show" for morning drive time to pull more listeners into WFMU as a whole. I don't think this is a bad premise, but IMHO it needs to be watched carefully so that it doesn't become a bigger creature than what it's servicing.

	10:55am deborah: @Ike. Yes, agreed. As a longtime WFMU listener, follower, and radio geek-journalism prof., I have heard and studied the changes in "Listener Sponsored" and "Public Radio." (I am not going on an academic tangent.) WFMU has not gone the quasi commercial path and perhaps that accounts for its independence. WAKE serves its function; it is a cross between the WFMU oeuvre, with tinges of prior decade morning radio, including the great Herb Oscar Anderson on WABC. It's just sometimes the music doesn't match Clay's persona. Guess demographics and listener analysis will ultimately show results. I know about WFMU volunteers; I was one and hope to return in some capacity.

From 11:00 to ~11:10 a.m., they complain in real-time about Felder and announce offerings on alternative stations. From ~11:10 to noon, they retrospectively complain about Felder and crow about superior selections on alternative stations. Save for creative/humorous insults, it seems like an exhausting routine. And I'm saying this as someone who basically has commentboard autism and usually brings nothing to any conversation other than "ME LIKE THIS SONG!"
