I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Welcome, my radio family fred, chresti, james and coel! Good morning, JoeB!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04pm fleep:

Greetings, Mayuko and thank you for putting the planet in the wash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05pm chresti:

Yay Joseph Hammer
Avatar 12:06pm Mayuko:

Play Vertigo is here to make the world a better place, fleep! Thanks for tunin' in!
  12:07pm rbrt:

hi! how’s everyone
Avatar 12:08pm Mayuko:

@chresti his Dynasty Suites is forever my favorite. absolutely beautiful stuff!!!
Avatar 12:09pm Mayuko:

Hi rbrt! great to have you here!!
  12:10pm rw:

Good morning! I don't know Joseph Hammer. I do know JoesephB though... Hey Joe!
  12:11pm rbrt:

this track gets the most musical genres in a mix award
  12:11pm JosephB:

Morning rw!
  12:12pm rw:

Could be that I'm not really awake yet but the music and the earth wash seem to fit nicely together.
Avatar 12:13pm Mayuko:

Good morning rw! Glad to add another Joseph to your Joseph-list!
Avatar 12:14pm northguineahills:

Let's see, there's Jan Hammer, MC Hammer....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Doug Schulkind:

Play Vertigo, rinse, spin, repeat!
Avatar 12:14pm Mayuko:

@rw They supposed to do that!
  12:15pm rbrt:

this is great i’m going to find part one
  12:15pm dropof goldensun:

Greetings Mayuko and Listenerds!
Avatar 12:15pm Mayuko:

@ngh MC Hammer!!!! I should play him sometime.
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

Doug!!! Hallos!!!!!
  12:16pm rw:

I never met a Joe I didn't like. Thank you for the confirmation Mayuko! I heard you're going to Finland!! (Finland, right?)
Avatar 12:16pm Mayuko:

Dropof!!! No one in your lab today?
Avatar 12:17pm fred:

This is wonderful
  12:18pm rw:

Frederick Hammersley
Avatar 12:18pm Mayuko:

@rbrt yeah! It's on Pan's bandcamp.
  12:19pm dropof goldensun:

No. I'm alone in the lab today! Always the best scenario!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm listener james from westwood:

tag yourself I am the high-pitched growly voice going "ba ba ba"
  12:22pm dropof goldensun:

I forgot my password to sign in today and for some reason the email to reset my password is never showing up. Checking spam too. So every time I post a message here it's making me do math?! I suppose to prevent ROBOTS!!! the other strange thing is, it's still letting me use my username without signing in. Does this mean anyone can sign is as anyone else? Very odd.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm fleep:

All of our tiny radios are missing, too. Gremlins from the Kremlin, no doubt.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hello vertigo! Trying to discern whether those are washing machines or old-timey TV sets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Yvang:

@ Ken From Hyde Park: I'd say none of it, rather dryers
Avatar 12:27pm Mayuko:

Yeah, I think I've even seen my impersonator here before. The math is there to give you some brain exercises so that your focus increases as you work in your lab, it's a thoughtful gesture from the station.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm Yvang:

Hello Mayuko and vertigo people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm chresti:

Your right fleep, I suspect it's the fundraiser machine at work. I wonder if submitting artwork earns a radio, maybe only if someone buys it?
Avatar 12:28pm Mayuko:

oh yeah! We're stripped our radios and hearts! We have no hearts any more!!!!
Avatar 12:28pm fred:

@fleep: Yeah, and our pledging history has been wiped from the profiles. I had mixed feelings about these anyway. Maybe it shames a few people into pledging, but I'm not happy with the shaming
  12:29pm rbrt:

cho oyu 8200 meters above sea level. that’s crazy high
Avatar 12:29pm Mayuko:

Hi Ken and Yvang!!! Happy to have you here!!!!!
Avatar 12:29pm northguineahills:

Check out Geir Jenssen's Biosphere project. one of the biosphere albums he remixes Debussy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm chresti:

I think it resets for every fundraiser
  12:31pm dropof goldensun:

Haha! Thanks for that thoughtful gesture, I need it today! It's still pissing off the robots but I'm not sure why? They are better at math than me. Btw, I'm not really alone at the lab, I still have all the Listenerds!
Avatar 12:31pm fred:

@ngh: I saw Lea Bertucci yesterday! I even got a chance to chat briefly with her before and after her set
Avatar 12:31pm Mayuko:

@ngh I love Biosphere! I first heard that project I think on Sam Segal's show.
  12:32pm rbrt:

i’m going to check that biosphere out
Avatar 12:35pm Starwick:

Mayuko , I caught Carl Stone and Akaihirume in Brooklyn the other week! Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

If you've pledged a certain level to Wake 'n' Bake or to Kenzo's shows, you get a special icon that only appears on their playlists. I don't know if other shows have extra goodies like that.
Avatar 12:38pm northguineahills:

oh, cool, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i remember this picnic. not even the ants came. (hi, everyone!)
  12:40pm Rich in Washington:

This is fantastic! listening while cooking breakfast.
Hi everyone!
Avatar 12:40pm Mayuko:

@dropof glad to be your company! we better than robots!
Avatar 12:41pm northguineahills:

@rbrt: Shenzhou is my favorite, but they're all good
Avatar 12:41pm Mayuko:

Hi Starwick! Good for you! It happened on a Saturday, right? I somehow thought it was on Sunday and missed the whole thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm melinda:

hello everyone
Avatar 12:41pm northguineahills:

Peter "Pita" Rehberg, nice guy, great artist and label boss....
  12:42pm Rickwaukee:

Why can't ALL Helicopters sound this nice?
Avatar 12:43pm Mayuko:

@Ken that sounds fun! I wish each show has a unique pledge icon and the whole thing can become like a stamp rally! We alt-stream DJs would be like rare pokemons.
  12:43pm dropof goldensun:

I'm loving this Peter Rehberg!!
Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

Hi Granny spicy tuna! & Thanks for tuning in, Rich!!!
Avatar 12:44pm Mayuko:

Hi melinda!!!
Avatar 12:45pm fred:

@ngh: my after-show talk was to tell her a specific wooden pane at the bottom of the church's pulpit was vibrating a lot and acting as an amplifier (I found out because bass sounds were louder nearby). Very listenerdish of me, but she seemed to like that bit of info
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Ivan:

Hi Mayuko, also really enjoying this Rehberg track
Avatar 12:45pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee Haha! I should have had a helicopter gif on the playlist today!
Avatar 12:46pm Mayuko:

Hey Ivan! Thanks for listening & checking in!
Avatar 12:47pm fred:

Funny, I was talking about Stockhausen's Helikopter with a friend yesterday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47pm melinda:

Love the washing machines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Michael 98145:

... goes well with this track.
Avatar 12:50pm Mayuko:

Glad you guys dig the washing machine! & welcome on board, Michael 98145!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Michael 98145:

g'day, Mayuko!

( here's a show i wish i could see: pioneerworks.org... )
  12:53pm rbrt:

those machines should be in every laundromat
  12:56pm rbrt:

lol opportunity costs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Michael 98145:

love your musings, Ms Mayuko

Avatar 12:57pm fred:

@Michael 98145: You should see them if they come your way, they're great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Michael 98145:

@fred, i really enjoy their recording
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Michael 98145:

Mayuko, there are things that don't make immediate sense to me, either
  1:01pm rbrt:

it’s four
  1:02pm rbrt:

Avatar 1:07pm fred:

For some reason it's been bad for the first hour of David Dichelle's show, but I don't think it happened during yours. Maybe the Daves/Mayukos imbalance is the cause
  1:08pm Rickwaukee:

I remember Taking Heads - 'Fear of Music' did NOT make sense to me. After quite a few listens it finally Blew My Mind. We cling to our identities like security blankets but at what opportunity cost?
Avatar 1:08pm Franco Twinkie:

Car alarm?
  1:09pm Rickwaukee:

oh, I WISH they had titled one of their albums 'TAKING Heads"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Michael 98145:

like a Front 242 track

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm chresti:

if only car alarms sounded like this
  1:10pm rbrt:

oh so weird I read “talking heads” anyway until you pointed it out
Avatar 1:11pm fred:

I think Steve Reich used car alarms in City Life
Avatar 1:11pm Sem:

Ohhhh, love some shimmering entanglement.

Hello, Mayuko, and Vertigo-goers.
  1:11pm Rickwaukee:

more like a washer in spin cycle with balance issues
Avatar 1:13pm Franco Twinkie:

Or bearings on a water pump about to seize.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm chresti:

I thought that too@Rickawaukee
  1:13pm rbrt:

a washer with vertigo
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm chresti:

or a flat tire
Avatar 1:15pm Franco Twinkie:

That would be more of a fwup fwup fwup.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Michael 98145:

@rbt, :) !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Michael 98145:

  1:16pm rbrt:

Avatar 1:19pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee It took me some time to get Talking Heads too but later they became one of the bands I love the most! I like that feeling when it happens.
Avatar 1:20pm Mayuko:

Hi Franco, and my radio family Sem!! Happy to have you guys here!
  1:20pm Rickwaukee:

I was expecting something like the bouncy stuff that I heard them play on SNL but I got ENO'ed
  1:21pm rbrt:

I hated the talking heads because the radio would play like one track over and over and over. Later on I revisited their albums and enjoy it more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm fleep:

what you hated was the radio. they still do that. that's why we're here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Michael 98145:

  1:23pm rbrt:

true fleep
  1:23pm Rickwaukee:

probably 'Take Me To The River' (which isn't even a TH original) or 'Psycho Killer' - yeah, there are tons more to them than what ever got played, even on Alternative Radio
  1:23pm dropof goldensun:

I loved Talking Heads from the very beginning but Fear of Music still blew my mind! I miss them so much!
  1:24pm rw:

Years ago while driving across the country with my friend Marcus and a woman we didn't know, she had been asleep in the back seat and woke up to Music for 18 Musicians on the tape deck. It took several minutes to explain to her that it wasn't the car "making a weird noise, don't you hear it??"
  1:24pm rw:

Fear of Music. Is that the black embossed cover? I think that's my favorite.
Avatar 1:27pm fred:

@rw: listener Ignatatus666 is a cab driver and has WFMU on during his shifts. Some of his fares must have got worried at times
  1:27pm Rickwaukee:

Cool story on RadioLab couple weeks ago about how AC/DC power converters on NYC subways were engineered to make a specific set of notes when they did their job - everyone thinks they're hearing something from 'West Side Story'! haw
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm paul b:

Opportunity cost. That term got thrown around a lot in my school days. I always thought it was best used to think about aggregate decisions - where a nations production curve might lie with different societal values. Like if we dropped a few less GP$ bombs on Afghan farmers we might be able to afford AOC's Green New Deal. But then some would say "right and we'd have the Taliban opening kabab restaurants in Silver Spring". So there is that.

In individual decisions you would have to know too much about the outcomes to make it work.
I've always thought your show brings me to new understandings of myself. You can't put a price on that
  1:37pm rbrt:

I love this dream clock song.
  1:41pm rw:

fred, my kids' friends all have thought that about my house at some point or other. Maybe some of my friends too. From my perspective Ignatatus666 is doing a public service!

rbrt, me too. Actually the whole show. Except the parts I missed. This may be the most zoned-out program I've heard.
Avatar 1:42pm Mayuko:

@paul b yeah, that concept only makes sense in such specific situations where logical thinking is needed. certainly not on Bryce's show, haha!

I just think we never know what we are truly "gaining" and "losing" from anything - to me it feels more a question of will you find meanings in it or not and it's up to me. Every week I do a show and all the artists I play certainly help me understand things and myself better, too! It makes me happy to hear that's how you feel too and thank you for the kind words!!!!
Avatar 1:44pm fred:

@paul b: you might be on to something there. Afghanistan's power structure is complicated, but what if a way to solve it was just saying "who's good enough to beat the others in building the best kebab franchise in Silver Spring?"
  1:46pm rw:

Oh yeah, Bryce's show. His shows are at least this zoned-out.
Avatar 1:49pm fred:

I have to disagree about Bryce's show. I find it very logical. The axioms just happen to be different
  1:49pm rbrt:

plant music! this sounds great
  1:50pm dropof goldensun:

I'm going to try to go to the plant and synths show. Sounds really interesting!
Avatar 1:51pm northguineahills:

Thanks, Mayuko! I'm out salud, folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm chresti:

Mayuko your show is already a special event!
  1:52pm JosephB:

Thanks for another great show, Mayuko! Catch everyone next week.
  1:52pm dropof goldensun:

Is today anything special? A parade is walking by my lab window playing bagpipes.
Avatar 1:52pm fred:

I'll miss most if not all of the show next week: I'll be at a veena concert (I love this instrument)
Thanks for today's show
  1:52pm rbrt:

thank youuuuu Mayuko
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:53pm melinda:

@Rick I heard that one, it was funny. @Mayuko thanks for the sounds!
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

Perfect ending!
  1:53pm Rickwaukee:

How they get all that water to come out of that screen???? and one guy gets a little splashed in the face???
  1:53pm rw:

Thank you Mayuko! I missed the part about opportunity cost. You keeping the cat?? (I guess I can hit the archive for the answer). Have a good weekend everyone!!
  1:53pm dropof goldensun:

Duran Duran! hahaha! Nice! I need the video now!
Avatar 1:53pm northguineahills:

nice use of opportunity cost!
Avatar 1:54pm fred:

@dropof goldensun: Today's Techno Parade in Paris, but that doesn't fit
Avatar 1:54pm fred:

Does anyone remember Duran Duran Duran?
Avatar 1:54pm Mayuko:

@Rickwaukee THAT forever been my question for 3 decades! Also even now I still have no idea what the heck Simon is singing about?!
  1:55pm Barnaby:

Thanks Mayuko!
  1:55pm dropof goldensun:

@fred - No, not all! Besides, I'm in New Jersey! haha
  1:55pm rw:

One more thought... are we happy there were no technical glitches today?
Avatar 1:55pm Mayuko:

But I LOOOOVE this song!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm chresti:

Thanks Mayuko!
  1:55pm dropof goldensun:

Mayuko, obviously!
Avatar 1:56pm Mayuko:

@fred Duran Duran Duran is the only name I approve among those parody band names.
Avatar 1:56pm northguineahills:

@rw: Mayuko used watching the Reflex video hundreds of times when she was a kid as an example of opportunity cost....
  1:56pm dropof goldensun:

Thanks Mayuko! Great show as usual!
Avatar 1:56pm Mayuko:

Hi Barnaby!!! Thank you for listening!!!
  1:57pm dropof goldensun:

It's not a bad song but I do have a slight problem with the why eye eye eye part!
Avatar 1:57pm Mayuko:

Dropof! What do you mean! That's the most exciting part of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Doug Schulkind:

Music For a Free World with Dave Sewelson is up next on the Drummer Stream. Dave's special surprised guest is trumpeter Arnold Hammerschlag!

@ngh I've become that adult who exploit all the precious things! sob!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm melinda:

Triple Duran reminds me of that Vaselines song about how they hated the 80s.
  1:59pm dropof goldensun:

Hahaha! Ok. Who am I I I I to criticize!
Avatar 2:02pm Mayuko:

Thanks again everyone for listening, it was great to have you all here with me! See you all next week!!
