Pardon the racist comment. I got it from Pete Townshend, in my defense.

Deadhaters should tune out right now.

Woodsist was awesome, great vibe. Wet Tuna are the best band on the planet
  10:08pm

Awwww Hunter! I knew you’d open with a tribute to our man. Thanks Jeff

Hey Jeff, looking forward to an evening of Hunter

I don't think this is noodling, this is dancing on the edge of the universe
  10:15pm
The Butterman:

I saw Hunter at Irving Plaza and Patti Smith joined him and hocked a lougie right on stage. I was outraged at the time. Maybe it was ‘97 ish
Avatar 10:16pm
Jeff Conklin:

Wow, butterman. How was the show otherwise
Avatar 10:16pm

I only smoke weed once a year.. was thinking this might be a good night to 'light up' .. then Dark Star came on the radio and I feel quite high enough!

Also, all should feel free to leave comments about Hunter's impact on your life, experiences seeing him, etc..

Yes, Jeff
  10:20pm
The Butterman:

Jeff, otherwise the show was an epic, special, rare treat. To see an artist who had such a remarkable relationship with the Jerry was a once in a lifetime experience for me.

noodling is Phil ‘n Friends starting a show with a mindless jam > Blues For Allah. It’s closer to soundcheck than anything else

Hunter’s tunes mean the world to me.?Especialky Terrapin Station. “His Job Is To Shed Light/Not To Master” Are you kidding? What a song. This past summer, my wife and I saw Dead and Co (save your Dead and Slow/Dead and Bro comments), and I was really hoping to hear Terrapin. My wife was pregnant with our now one month old son, so she said, “rub my belly for good luck!” Sure enough, first set, first song, Terrapin Station. You can’t make this stuff up.
  10:27pm

That’s beautiful, Chris

just tuning in, thanks for this Jeff
  10:31pm
The Butterman:

Chris, I musta sung Terrapin hundreds of times to my son as a baby/toddler and beyond as he fell asleep.
Avatar 10:31pm

Well, felt like this needed to be done for RH and also for those whove been missing the Dead sets due to the more streamlined hours...

Holy crap this Eyes of the World kills!
  10:35pm

the scope of these lyrics... almost an existential anthem. so bold, and powerful, yet still humble in a way. showcases the confidence he had as a writer

MONEYBAG$:

you can't lose with '73 dead
  10:40pm
The Butterman:

I love a Jerry band show when Hunter joins him for a couple of songs, Promentory Rider, where Jerry dies sweet and fun background vocals. 1980 maybe.
  10:40pm
Carmichael:

Box of Rain is my Hunter song.
  10:41pm
tfunk:

Butterman, yeah I think that’s 02/20/80 Keane College. Very good show
  10:41pm
phat:

I should write an essay, "how I learned to stop worrying and love the Dead. "
  10:42pm
Woodland Will:

Wake up to find out you are the Eyes of the world could have been the only lyrics to the song and it would still be genius! And man, 73 dead is absolute nectar and it was the year hunter wrote ‘stella blue’

I've been reading an important account of the development of English Romantic poetic theory and practice, M.H. Abrams' The Mirror and the Lamp. You're touching on themes Abrams emphasizes, which leads me to recognize an essential component of Romanticism on the work of the Dead.

^in the work

Speaking of radio shows, KPFK's Thursday Lunch was my regular fix back in the...'80s? '90s? Whenever, it was a terrific program.

The way that Robert Hunter integrated botanical and natural mystical references into these songs is so infinitely inspiring. Such a great balance of joy, spirituality, blessing searching seeking and never afraid to dig deep even if it’s not always typically pretty. His lyricism songs and collaborations have brought tears of wonder to my eyes countless times. We are all so lucky to have been able to live in this world with such a brilliant generous human.
