hi one and all. what a lovely place 'nowhere' has turned out to be!
  12:28am
rw:

How-dee! I have a copy of that La Monte Young CD. It's LONG. You couldn't have played the whole thing. I mean, unless there was some kind of time shift I wasn't aware of. Thinking about it, I remember my ex-wife hated that CD.

i'm often tempted to do a show where i just play 3 hour-long pieces
  12:33am

Hmmm... the pledge thingy seems not to be working. I'll get you next week. How many 3 hour long works can you fit into a three hour show?
Avatar 12:36am
sv:

no worries, rw - i'm thinking i can get in at least one
  12:39am
greatb:

any recent FMU DJs do 3-hour stretches? would be cool to see what pieces they chose
Avatar 12:40am

not that i'm aware of but truly anything is possible here

Hey man, hope you’re having a good night
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41am

it's not uncommon for Bryce to play hour-long pieces
-maybe longer, but they're interrupted by the legal id.
Avatar 12:41am
sv:

hey blame, thanks for joining us!
  12:41am
greatb:

i guess the only drawback would be having to turn it down to work in the station ID
Avatar 12:42am
sv:

the longest piece i've played in full was around 30 minutes or so i think
  12:42am
rw:

I can't think of any three hour works off the top of my head, though I'm sure there are plenty.
  12:42am
greatb:

john cage comes to mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43am
coelacanth∅:

probably Jeff Mullen. definitely Stan has played tracks that exceeded an hour...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43am

nurse with wound has a piece that extends over a few cds. ("salt")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:44am
coelacanth∅:

Cecil Taylor and Miles Davis...
  12:44am
rw:

I saw Philip Glass do Music in Twelve Parts. It came in at around four hours I think. There was a dinner break intermission.
  12:45am
greatb:

Yeah been going through Stan's recent archives... he had one that was around 80-90 minutes in June/July
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:47am
coelacanth∅:

speaking of ...Stan played the entire necks track that Dan Bodah used to use for bed music ("clearwater"? -something like that)
which is over an hour. i don't think he interrupted it for the id either.

greatb do you remember the artist?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54am

soliloquy for lilith by nurse with wound is almost 107 minutes long. when it was released it got tons of airplay on fmu. i wonder if anyone played the whole thing
  12:55am
greatb:

would have to look more closely coela. what does come to mind is a 53 minute Lee Ranaldo piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57am
coelacanth∅:

i might go look for that. i don't miss not being able to sleep more than 2 hours/day; but i do miss Stan's show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am
coelacanth∅:

i could probably listen to this Steve Reich piece for over an hour
Avatar 1:01am
sv:

fuckin gorgeous, just had my head done in by that
  1:01am
greatb:

yeah i've missed Stan the last couple of weeks
  1:03am
rw:

There's a Steve Reich performance scheduled for Disney Hall in LA next year. I was thinking about buying tickets but the works aren't my favorite. Still seats available but most of the good ones are gone. I sure hope I'm not making a big mistake.
Avatar 1:04am
sv:

i'd really love to see works of his performed, only ever listened to recordings
  1:04am
greatb:

yeah it's definitely worth it coela. it's in the June 21, 2019 Stan
  1:07am
rw:

sv, you're not helping. I can get two okay seats together or a good seat by itself. I should get the two, right? I'll find someone who'd want to go by June. Not cheap but not expensive either.
  1:07am
greatb:

met a dude who's seen "Music for 18 Musicians" like 24 times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07am

we all have our own tastes, but there are some Reich pieces i wouldn't care to sit through.
(and of course many that i'd love to)

...thanks greatb. bookmarked.
  1:08am
greatb:

yeah I probably wouldn't sit through a live rendition of "It's Gonna Rain" (though it'd be cool)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08am
coelacanth∅:

...but of course there's no way to know if this will be your last opportunity to see Steve Reich.
  1:11am
rw:

Double Sextet, Runner and the premier of a new work. I would totally sit through It's Gonna Rain! I don't think I've seen Music for 18, but it's a favorite. I'm sure I've listened to the record hundreds of times. I used to have a tape of it in the car.

he probably wont.

my mom keeps bees. she says it's a lot of work.
  2:04am

she took a class... they helped her get set up with the materials & stuff. part of the fee. maybe you could find a group like that, or just some random beekeeper in your neighborhood...

I am moving back to New Mexico where I grew up, and now that I am looking it seems like through the state beekeeping association I could find some guidance. I have never been to fearful of bee stings and the idea of having jars of fresh honey and relationship with a hive I think could suit me... just brain storming the future and bes are important part of the future it seems. Thanks for the input everyone!

Also. I am loving this track.
  2:11am
rw:

Z, you should do it! If you don't like it I'm sure there's a way out. We had some neighbors with bee hives. I think my son's allergic so as long as you don't live next door to me.
  2:11am
johnzo:

yup. you'd be doing the lord's work. er... Gaia's. and one hive can produce a surprising amount if honey too apparently.

The only thing about the property my family has is its near the mountains and bears could be a concern.. Ill have to ask some folks with more knowledge about how worried to be about bigger hungry animals going after the honey.
  2:14am
johnzo:

I know my mom has a fence around hers... I wanna say it's electric but I may be imagining that. Im not sure if it's for bears or other critters... tho I did get within about 20 feet of a bear not far from her house once(it ran away from me)
  2:15am
rw:

A bunch of bees formed a basketball sized mass at work a few years ago. Evidently they were migrating and the queen got tired so they all swarmed around her for protection while she rested. It looked insane when they took off again. The whole courtyard was filled with bees! Somewhere I may have a photo...
Avatar 2:16am
Z-pulpa:

rw, whoa that is amazing you got to be a witness!
  2:16am
johnzo:

one time I saw a beekeeper remove a swarm of bees from one of those grills they have at public parks... it was fascinating. he used smoke.
  2:16am
greatb:

then the worker bees form a union and the queen gets a revolving door wall street gig
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16am
coelacanth∅:

i've been up to my chest, surrounded by blooming mint with hundreds (at least) of bees all around me and not gotten stung while working at a normal pace -pulling weeds and such.
i did get a warning once (in several years) because i'd inadvertently been rough with them. i just stepped back and came back to that spot later that day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17am
coelacanth∅:

far out rw!
  2:17am
greatb:

what form of warning?
  2:19am
johnzo:

yea I had a similar experience cleaning up trash on my block... they were swarming around a bottle of barbecue sauce or something. I was able to take trash from all around them without getting stung somehow... just gotta be careful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21am
coelacanth∅:

a couple of them flew around my face. maybe they were just checking me out but they never did that before, and i know i was being rough. i pulled some weeds that were tough and when i got 'em i whacked the mint pretty hard.
  2:22am
Zetti:

Consider mason bee keeping, no honey but they are best pollinators.
  2:22am
johnzo:

then I tried to show some friends this cool Wasp nest... which Ive been close to many times before... but this time one of them fell out of the nest, then got angry and stung my friend...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23am
coelacanth∅:

swarming around barbecue sauce sounds more like something yellowjackets would do
  2:23am
johnzo:

also... bee talk aside, Ive been digging this set as well
  2:24am

honestly yea, it could well have been yellowjackets

Im in MI... I never saw one before last summer & I lived in Vermont for several years but idk...
"The genus Agapostemon is a common group of Western Hemisphere sweat bees, most of which are known as metallic green sweat bees for their color. They are members of the family of bees known as Halictidae. Like other sweat bees, they are attracted to human sweat, and they use the salt from the sweat for nutrition."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29am

wow those green bees like cool as hell!
... it might be the "green orchid bee", not native to this continent and invasive.

hornets are nasty too... lotta 'tude in northeast bees
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32am

yellowjackets are wasps, and though i see many species of wasps on the flowers i rarely see yellowjackets on them. they like sugar, and meat.
  2:32am

especially when it gets time for the county fairs and the fried dough
  2:32am

idk coel, could have been, it's hard to tell but I think the green orchid bees are a bit bigger? this one was real tiny
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33am

all those other wasps seem as docile as the bees, by my experience. the only ones i have a problem with are the yellowjackets and the white-faced hornets.

it was a big paper nest? -on a tree branch or in the eves of a house? (that's what the hornets do. yellowjackets dig holes)
