By the time I started hanging out at Max’s, none of those groups played there anymore. But Jayne herself was there a lot, and she was great!

I would have loved to go to Max's Kansas City but it closed when I was 10. In my dreams I am in the back room, chatting with Gerard Malanga, sipping whiskey sours and leaving Debbie Harry a nice tip.

good evening, EFD and everyone!
tuned in a bit late, but so enjoying what i am hearing (and yup! still have a bunch of NY Rocker issues :) )
@ Kat in Chicago -- YES!!! "Fan Mail" is one of my favorite Blondie songs too!
@ the chicken of the trees -- i was thinking of Julia too! only met her within the last year or so, such a fascinating person (and funny too!)

were the NY Rocker offices located in an old, abandoned school building on Eighth Street, just east of Avenue B? i remember going there with the "ex" and walking through Tomkins Square Park (on a Sunday morning, i think?!?) . . . TOTALLY spooky, the park was empty and the atmosphere was all misty, foggy . . . we were both still in school (!979? '80? "81?) (and living in New Jersey, hah!) and he was delivering artwork to the Rocker . . . the building was FREEZING (maybe no heat?) but the place was totally buzzing with all this amazing ENERGY . . .
what a fantastic, precious time in NYC . . . !
  11:28pm

The Fast seemed to be playing all the time around town, especially CBGB and Max's.

I have such an imaginary picture of that scene from your description, slugluv, although I didn't see 8th and B myself till the mid-90s. Wow.

slugluv1313:

ahh EFD these tunes are like the soundtrack to every party i went to back then :)
Avatar 11:35pm
slugluv1313:

@ Phillippe Bastille -- The Fast were an incredible "power pop" band (for lack of a better description) -- pretty sure you can find them on youtube, etc.
  11:36pm
Jett:

@Phillippe I remember a track by The Fast "Boys Will Be Boys" and a few years later an album that the cover was a parody of The Who Sell Out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

Kickstarter sounds like a great idea if y'all could get the word out. I'd buy in.

Avatar 11:46pm
slugluv1313:

thank-you, Kat! even though i was in NJ (Douglass/Rutgers U. -- i was like the lone "punk" among all the jocks and preppies, hah!) i managed to go to NYC as much as i could -- it really was an amazing time, i consider myself lucky that i got to participate, even if it was just going to Max's, CBGB's, etc.
which reminds me! Max's had cocktails named after bands -- the Blondie, Cherry Vanilla, Tuff Darts, etc. . . . the SUICIDE was like EVERY high proof liquor in one long tall glass (and yeah, the "ex" insisted on drinking this, hah!) . . . Julia Gorton mentioned this when i met her, she said she had found the Max's drink menu online -- but it may actually have one somewhere (yeah, i am one of those goofballs who saves ticket stubs too, hah!)
