Hello divine horse!
  9:19pm
Chris:

Haha Kanye West certainly does have so eccentricities that are troubling.

I didn’t know Allen Ginsburg made music. How interesting.

I have made the Milton Friedman choir my college’s theme song (except nobody knows this)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm
Sam Segal:

Holy Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm
Sam Segal:

@Chris: That Minton Friedman choir song is just eerie enough to be the perfect college fight song! Allen Ginsberg didn't make a ton of music but the stuff he did put out is fantastic.
  9:26pm
Dean:

Sequentia, "Plebs Domini," the apotheosis of religious music. I promise. It is stunning.

Sam Segal:

Thanks, Dean! I'll check it out.
  9:27pm
Chris:

Yeah that was a fabulous song. I think he spent a lot of his later years in the Pacific Northwest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

I don't know what to make of this Kanye Business. To say I'm skeptical of him elevating himself to such an exalted position is besides the point. He's a nut of out sized proportions, which I guess is perfect for todays mixed up and frightening America. Ultimately who cares? No one I talk to. Bah! more baloney for a world that gorges on all kinds of junk food.
  9:31pm
Dean:

My take is Kanye is pretty much untalented, which is OK. Same goes for Puff Daddy, a bunch of those guys. Good on them for trying, but I'm not impressed.
  9:32pm
Chris:

Thanks for the Beck recommendation Franco. I didn’t know he had such a distinct sound. Was rocking out to it last week.

Thanks for the entertainment Sam. I gotta run can’t study and enjoy the show together.

Happy Halloween!

Sam Segal:

I came of age during peak Kanye hype, and I will never not see him as one of the greats, but I have no way of knowing whether that's completely deluded or not. Hell, it probably is. But I am okay with that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

You're welcome Chris.

I remember when a coworker gave me Kanye's College Dropout to listen to. It check off all of the boxes of what should be good poppy hiphop, but it didn't do anything for me...
  9:35pm
Dean:

Yes. It is deluded.

For that matter, Beck. Really? Granted, I avoided his work, nevertheless I heard it because somebody played it. He did what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm
Sam Segal:

@NGH, may I suggest trying some of his more idiosyncratic work? Yeezus or 808s & Heartbreak. Both masterpieces to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well Dean, One mans baloney is another fellows Zankou Chicken.

You can't get more tautological than that.

Speaking of the same damn thing, Dean. Chresti just gave me a gluten free rice cracker that tasted just like a communion wafer, and I liked it! Unlike the real deal, which I would hold in my mouth until I could spit it under the pew, I swallowed It!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm
chresti:

Beck has some good dance numbers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
Sam Segal:

I always loved this ballad by Beck called "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime." Only thing of his I ever really got into. Speaking of religion, Beck's one of indie rock's favorite Scientologists!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm
chresti:

Haven't heard much Kanye music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy would be the best place to start, Chresti.

Do you think that most famous musicians have large heads? Or maybe it's small bodies?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Franco Twinkie:

Sam, That is probably true, which makes you wonder, buT unlike Kanye West, he keeps his goddamned mouth shut about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Sam Segal:

A Scientology turn for Kanye certainly seems within the realm of possibility.

@Chestri your lucky you do not listen to Kanye music I for one think he sucks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm

Folks, I understand not liking Kanye West's music. I do. If his music weren't so good, I'd be right there with you! John, hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm

I don't agree @John from FP
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Franco Twinkie:

Regarding Carlos Santana and his spiritual preoccupations, Way,way back in the way back, a friend of mine worked at this place in San Francisco that sold and serviced old jukeboxes. Carlos came in and bought a particularly classy box for his beloved collection of 45's. When it was delivered to Chez Santana, one of his religious minders fell on the floor at begged him to return this worldly appliance to the heathens who sold it to him. Carlos blithely ignored him I was told.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm
Sam Segal:

Oh man, that's a hell of an anecdote, Franco. Way to have some backbone, Santana!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
Franco Twinkie:

He wears some funny hats, but the dude is a stone rocker!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm
coelacanth∅:

what sort of religion or spiritual idea does Carlos Santana relate to that one of his "religious minders" might freak out over a beautiful old piece of history and function in the form of a jukebox?
  10:29pm
Dean:

In short, I blame Steely Dan. They opened the door to mediocrity, by which I mean, inter alia, Kanye and most lazy-ass male rappers, Sea & Cake, Tortoise, bands that assume their precious observations are sufficient...bland music that says much but doesn't do much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

You got me on that one, Coel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Sam Segal:

Kanye did flip a great Steely Dan sample, but that's the first time I've heard him brought up in the same breath as Tortoise. Talk about a dream collaboration!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm

Dean, you crack me up! Once again you're just lobbing spit balls from the back of the class room, and you don't care who you hit just as long as you get someone to react. I admire your persistence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm

hahaha
  10:40pm
Dean:

You're right, Franco, except for the fact that I'm aiming quite precisely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm

i used to be a pretty good shot with the spitballs...except i thought it was gross so i chose my targets with purpose.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm

@dean, “the royal scam”.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm

I don't think I ever heard the rapping Tortoise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm
Franco Twinkie:

I would just mouth off until some one laughed. It worked about 12% of the time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm
coelacanth∅:

what is this "tortoise"? and do i actually need to know?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
coelacanth∅:

12% is not very good, Franco
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
chresti:

Some vapid rapper?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm
chresti:

A vapid rapper named Tortoise, that is?
Avatar 10:48pm
still b/p:

Vapid Rapper...now, that's a superhero from which outfit, Marvel or DC?
  10:49pm
Dean:

Royal Scam, yep. That's the only SD album I own, and I play it now and then, knowing that it will haunt me. "Kid Charlemagne," in particular, gives me endless nightmares.

Tortoise is one of those dull Chicago bands that makes me weep every time I have to go to Chicago. Other than Provo, UT, it's the most boring town in America.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
coelacanth∅:

or a lame pop act with a hint of "jazz"? either way i think i'm all set.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm

i have several steely dan albums. but the only ones that have gotten played more than once in the last 35 years are pretzel logic and parts of can't buy a thrill.

Alice, Alice, who the f*ck is Alice!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

Carm just some chick that all the young girls love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Sam Segal:

Alice doesn't live here anymore, Carm!
  10:56pm
Dean:

That's Steely Dan for you. Some of this, or maybe all? Or maybe some? They should have quit while they were ahead...except they were never ahead.
Avatar 10:57pm
still b/p:

But ya gots to play Katy Lied while driving to sing along with Dr. Wu....right?
  10:58pm
Carmichael:

If you’ve heard the Smokie song Living Next Door to Alice, that’s the popular pub refrain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm
Sam Segal:

Doesn't get much better than Dr. Wu down the 405, SBP (to be clear, I am not speaking from experience),
Avatar 11:02pm
still b/p:

405 all smoky hot just now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth∅:

when steely dan was "relevant"(?) -the 70s- they were a group that young music lovers could listen to and whereby claim some level of sophistication beyond what was standard fare for most of the other high school students. partly because of the production, arrangements and execution; not necessarily so much the compositions themselves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth∅:

i'm not suggesting they actually *were* more sophisticated than, say black sabbath or marshall tucker band; though i'm not saying they weren't...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm
coelacanth∅:

(-led zeppelin or grateful dead, etc.)
  11:07pm
Carmichael:

@coel, they weren’t ...
  11:15pm
Dean:

coelacanth, you are exactly right, except that I question whether their production, arrangements, or execution actually amounted to much. I believe the band wanted to excel at boredom, and they most certainly did.
Avatar 11:16pm

I saw someone online poo-pooing Prince's music as mediocre pop music, today. I think I sprained my brain reading it....
  11:18pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Sam Segal:

Blasphemy, NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Sam Segal:

Dean, I had a feeling you might be heading in that direction...no comment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
coelacanth∅:

i always got a bit bored when someone would put a steely dan album on, back in the day. i really liked some songs though. i enjoyed it when we were stoned.
i do think the production was good; and they were no more boring than the 'dead in the 70s, which also required the effects of cannabis for enjoyment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
coelacanth∅:

...but my comment at 11.03 is based on it's relation to other music teenagers in the 70s were mostly listening to.
i was also listening to prog, which is obviously more sophisticated (in general) but i wouldn't compare it to that. my use of the word "sophisticated" (@11.03) should not be taken as my opinion or my terminology.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm
Franco Twinkie:

Okay, I just had a hot shower and I'm ready to kick a dead dog. I think I booted all my Steely Dan records in the late 70's so I could pay the rent. But unlike a lot of stuff I should have kept, I don't miss them. To me, they were like a carton of sour milk - It's not going to turn into cheese if you keep it around, It's just going to continue to stink.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

yeah i probably wont be keeping my steely dan albums if i get around to parting company with my records before i die. some of them are near mint too, as i didn't play them much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
coelacanth∅:

(even though i don't think they all totally stink)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Franco Twinkie:

No they don't, but music stops been meaningful. I liked a lot of bands that don't mean a goddamned thing to me anymore.
