Hullo. Gershwin so interesting.

@LarryLurex: The station is mainly good ol’ rock and roll! So the non-rock shows tend to be unjust fully ignored.

This show is great!

...in my ignorance classify Saint-Saëns as some kind of Moses of Ambient - so an eye-opener here...
Thx for curating such magnificent selections !

Dean:

WFMU really needs to expand classical programming along the lines, but others, too, that Bethany pursues.

Enjoyed hearing the Schnittke "Concerto Grosso", a lovely preview for a program of concerti grossi that my local town orchestra will be performing at the end of January.

Ken From Hyde Park:

After last week with Scott Williams, I don't know what constitutes classical music anymore. I need more education on the subject.
  8:50pm
Dean:

(In fact, I'm not even listening at the moment, because I'm playing some hella good gospel on my main system. But the program here warrants listener support!)

If your question is, "What is classical music?," then start with Monteverdi.

Thanks Bethany!

can you pick a performance of beethoven's violin concerto for next week, with or without piano?

Frank Verplanck:

Agree with Dean, some more classical on WFMU couldn't hurt. I very much enjoy programs by people who know a lot about a style of music and can share it. I really like when they can explain what is notable about a piece. There was a guy, years ago, I think on WBAI (could be mistaken there) who would go so far as to play the same passage by different performers, and point out what was significant in each interpretation.
  9:01pm
Eugene R.:

@Frank Verplanck - Yes, that is/was James Irsay on WBAI, "Morning Irsay", Fridays 10 am - 12 pm (at least until the coup overthrew the local programming).
Avatar 9:03pm
Frank Verplanck:

"the coup"?! at BAI coups were a regular thing! Thanks Eugene R.
  9:21pm
Dean:

Frank, yes! Comparative listening is an amazing experience! Emerson v. Bartok, v. Alban Berg (etc.) renditions of Bartok's SQs can be so instructive, but most importantly, they're all enjoyable.
