Favoriting November 15, 2019: The Flange & Frigate #055 - Some Other Guys

There were, of course, more than four people born in Liverpool who started a popular beat combo in those halcyon days of the Sixties, and on today's Flange & Frigate with DJ GeorgyGirl we celebrate them and the Scouse city by the sea. Featuring artists like The Searchers, The Merseys, The Swinging Blue Jeans, Tommy Quickly, Gerry & The Pacemakers, and more! Oh - and we do talk about the other OTHER guys as well. Be rude not to.

4 pm to 6 pm (EST)/9 pm to 11 pm (GMT)

Time to get yer Scouse in in just over five minutes! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Here we go! :-)
Avatar 4:02pm
Linda Lee:

hello! Scouse?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Jan Turkenburg:

Yes Merseybeat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Linda! Hi Jan! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Scouse or Scouser is the nickname for people from Liverpool :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

And also their accent ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm
chresti:

Hi GG and peeps!
Avatar 4:04pm
Linda Lee:

aha! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi chresti! :-)
Avatar 4:06pm
Mr Fab:

Hey GG! Kicking things off with a Bo Diddley cover makes me happy. Question: isn't 'scouse' referring to Manchester?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Mr Fab! Manchester is Mancunian :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

If you called someone from Manchester a Scouser they might kick you! You wouldn't want that! :-)
Avatar 4:11pm
Linda Lee:

is 'tip of my tongue' not loaded with 'i saw her standing there'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There's always tons of extra police when Liverpool play Manchester United at football - not a lot of love between the two cities!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - there's quite a lot of Beatley bits ;-)
Avatar 4:12pm
Mr Fab:

Ha, got it. "Randy Scouse Git," on of my fave Monkees songs, has nothing to do with Liverpool, near as I can tell.
Avatar 4:12pm
Linda Lee:

what year was the Tommy Quickly? i'm guessing it was first.
Avatar 4:13pm
Linda Lee:

i hear Paul's shoutin' vocal in this "Bony Moronie' too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - yep, it dies :-) There was a show called "Til Death Us Do Part" - "All in the Family" was the US take on it. And the son-in-law was a Liverpudlian, so the dad character used to call him a "randy scouse git". Mickey Dolenz thought it sounded cool ... which is why they ended up calling it "Alternate Title" ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Interestingly - the actor who played the son-in-law was Prime Minister Tony Blair's father in law in real life! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

DOES not dies!!!! Can't type this evening ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Georgie! I was sitting in the kitchen drawing a monster face, but I don't know if that's gonna work now that your on. Computer is in the living room, so now I am as well.
Avatar 4:15pm
Linda Lee:

it's great to hear the sound that bred the beatles! they didn't really just fall out of the moon the way it appeared to the americans!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Franco! :-)
Avatar 4:17pm
recordrouletteclub:

Sounding great GEORGY!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm

Hey Danny!! :-)
Avatar 4:18pm
recordrouletteclub:

Why, hello!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
Franco Twinkie:

Over here in the 60's, everyone used Castrol in their dirt bikes.
Avatar 4:19pm
Mr Fab:

Linda, I heard (and maybe GG can confirm this) that Liverpudlians were hipper then Londoners thanks to an American military presence that brought all the new records to the scousers before even those snobs down south could get 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Castrol was HUGE back in the day. Are they still a company?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - I get to that later on in the show ;-)
Avatar 4:20pm
Linda Lee:

they are, GG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Linda - aha! I always remember the ads back in the day :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
Franco Twinkie:

Still around. Red, white and green - black lettering.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That kind of slanted lettering. Wonderful. I do love a good font face :-)
Avatar 4:25pm
Linda Lee:

was there anywhere really safe from the US miiltary presence? it does seem that the good stuff spread around awfully fast.
the rollin' stones covered 'fortune teller'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Fortune Teller - also a big track for The 'oo :-)
Avatar 4:27pm
Linda Lee:

what i did here in the Dominos' 'fortune teller' is how very much Brian brought to the band. it's almost incalculable.
Avatar 4:27pm
recordrouletteclub:

Wow! This "Lies" track is great!! Never heard this one..Thanks GG!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I trust you're all in Cuban heels today? ;-)
Avatar 4:27pm
Mr Fab:

I forget where Brian Eno grew up, but he says that the nearby US base's radio station was very influential to his upbringing. Lotsa stuff he didn't hear on the BBC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Merseybeat, Tiki, Exotica, Lounge .... all traced back to the forces moving around the globe!
Avatar 4:29pm
Mr Fab:

i do in fact have a super snazzy pair of cuban heels aka beatle boots! Mrs Fab got 'em for me for christmas couple years ago. Love 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - perfect!!! :-)
Avatar 4:30pm
Linda Lee:

what a beautiful, beautiful thing.
i wore my last pair of beatle boots in the 70s, alas!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I do think that a chap looks rather good in a slight heel, I have to say. Straightens the back :-)
Avatar 4:31pm
Linda Lee:

pushes the butt out too!
Avatar 4:31pm
Linda Lee:

let's face it. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There's that, too! ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Same thing with cowboy boots! :-)
Avatar 4:31pm
Linda Lee:

gosh, isn't it true! :-D
Avatar 4:32pm
Linda Lee:

i like the overall mod look a bit more, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ironically, this Newtowns song sounds like The Byrds - who, of course wanted to sound like The Beatles ;-)
Avatar 4:33pm
Linda Lee:

yes, it does! really true!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think Mod style was a definite watershed moment for male British fashion.
Avatar 4:34pm
Linda Lee:

& then world fashion, i'd say. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Except I don't actually talk about skiffle in a little bit because I forgot ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The picture I posted on the Sheena Facebook group a while ago of me on the stairs of The Cavern was taken about a minute after I stopped crying. lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

I love these commercials for British products. When my sister and I saw Ferry Cross The Mersey in 1965, we were fasinated by the breakfast cereal Gerry Marsden was eating in his gloomy grey kitchen.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm

@Franco - the one thing I didn't do in Liverpool was go on the ferry because I have NO sea legs :-)
@MB - it flies by!
@Linda - I don't know! Probably :-)
Avatar 4:41pm

I think this is one of the best of the Merseybeat wave songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:05pm

'bennies' were big with the beatniks in the '50s, so no surprise 'go pills' (as they called 'em in the military) would move into the rockin '60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Weren't all the diet pills in the 60s pretty much speed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:30pm
ParUbi:

Amphetamines, right?
Avatar 5:30pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, House of Bamboo is usually played in an exotic style, but that was straight-up rockin. Nice!
