These probably aren't new and I just missed them, but I noticed two Ken Burns Country related show on the PBS sched. for this weekend. One being a BTS type documentary and the other some manner of artists celebrate the show special.

I miss the world of variety entertainment. Like a TV show with a political interview, then some animals doing things, then some music, then some celebrity talking deep and them maybe a magician.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
steveo:

I'll admit to forgetting what day it was, and thus being pleasantly surprised to find this show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm
mariano:

At first I thought I heard "He's a mean mean mime."
  8:34pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: Not too many mimes in NYC nowadays. Seems like it’s just people painted in silver standing still or some Chinese artists dressed like monkeys and doing an act.

google detective:

Ron Mason is a talented and successful songwriter and lyricist. He was a contract writer for Beechwood Music, a division of Capitol Records from 1965 through 1972. During his time with Beechwood Music his material was recorded by performers such as Wanda Jackson, Roy Rogers, Molly Bee, Wynn Stewart, and Bobby Austin among others.

Along with his other writing accomplishments, Ron wrote all the lyrics and co-wrote the music for a complete one hour musical production for choir and soloists.

Ron was also a full time musician, bandleader, and recording artist. His home base was in Southern California but he performed limited touring in Phoenix, Arizona and Las Vegas, Nevada. Ron worked with such nationally recognized artists as Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Wynn Stewart, Glen Campbell, Charlie Pride, Willie Nelson, and many more. Among career accomplishments; Ron sang in the Paramount Pictures movie "Downhill Racer" starring Robert Redford.

Currently Ron lives and works in North East Ohio where he continues to write and record original material.

Yup, can do that or at home. Thanks, google!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
mariano:

@JakeGould: Wow, you're right, can't think of any time in the last 20 years I've seen a mime out in public either in NYC or elsewhere. Howie Mandel used to do a hilarious bit in the 80s called "the death of a mime."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm
ultradamno:

Did Barbara Eden tell off the phonies every week on the TV series version of this?
  8:47pm
JakeGould:

@mariano: I work near Union Square and spend breaks around there and I can tell you that street performers are really not that great nowadays. I mean there are tons of “Free Hugs” people out there and missionaries. Only a few musicians every now and then thanks to NYU and the New School being nearby. No mimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm
steveo:

Not a mime, but sometimes I think about asking the naked cowboy how much to do a rendition of Michael Jackson''s Billie Jean
  8:48pm
JakeGould:

If there somehow were a street performer version of Mummenschanz I might be cool about that. Because I feel anxiety when I see Mummenschanz in an enclosed space. If you want to kill me that is how you do it…

Ken From Hyde Park:

When a nearby mall was just opened, there was a glass enclosure that did not yet have any mannequins installed. I popped inside and took a pose. A bit later, some woman shopper stared and came up close to see what was going on.

@JakeGould: I like it when there's the grand piano player in Washington Sq Park.

There are subway posters up right now for a Mummenschanz reunion tour and I can't think of anything worse.
  8:53pm
P-90:

Not seeing anything online about a singer named Bobbie Dee...
  8:53pm
JakeGould:

@steveo: Regarding “Billie Jean” on 59th Street in the N/R line in Brooklyn there is this really good duo (teens or twenties) who do decent pop hits on a guitar and synth. Also, at the Atlantic Avenue station on the N/R line there is an extremely good xylophone player and this guy who is definitely not Japanese but sings classic J-pop hits for some reason. Also, you can get the occasional Mariachi bands on the N/R line and even low rent magicians with dank-ass rabbits and doves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
ultradamno:

Weren't Mummenschanz the ones with the plastic tubes and crap? Prop comedians of the mime world.
  8:55pm
The Butterman:

JakeGould, coincidentally I just got 2 Mummenchance tickets and need someone to go with me. Available?
  8:55pm
JakeGould:

@ultradamno: They would be dressed in black and do like a cross between modern art, modern dance and prop comedy with things like toilet paper on their heads.

I remember going to see them as a kid and basically blacking out and blocking the whole experience and robotically saying “Yes!” when the adults who took me asked me if I liked it.
  8:56pm
P-90:

These Ron Mason Benefit performances are all very good.
  8:57pm
JakeGould:

@TheButterman: There is this homeless guy named “Matt” in Union Square who looks like a homeless Adam Driver. Always has a new pitch each day he asks for money. Take him out to see Mummenschanz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
ultradamno:

So they couldn't decide if they were bad mimes or bad puppeteers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
Becky:

They were also vaguely involved in the Star Wars Christmas Special. Which is not an endorsement.
  8:58pm
JakeGould:

I am not saying Mummenschanz is bad. Just that if I am trapped in a black box theater with Mummenschanz I —not anyone else — will just black out to repress the pain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
steveo:

Thanks to Becky & all the mystery artists,, see you next time

Well, I will say this to clear the Mummenschanz air…
