Five tasty hours of Give the Drummer Some today as I'm filling in for Underwater Theme Park. Meghan will be back next week. Until then, pass me a thigh and turn it up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05am ParUbi:

Good morning, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, ParyUbi! How u bi?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08am ParUbi:

We're good. Had a wonderful night with our first Pittsburgh friends last night. Beef daube and good music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09am Doug Schulkind:

Don't want to hear you cussing on Sunday, ParUbi. Unless you really have to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:10am ParUbi:

Yeah, none of us likes Turkey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11am ParUbi:

Not with Erdogan in power, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12am Doug Schulkind:

Hopefully you had plenty of Greece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15am ParUbi:

I had the Bouzoukee - The Music Of Greece (Nonesuch explorer) disk out, but that it might be too heavy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16am Doug Schulkind:

Everything in the Nonesuch Explorer series was pretty heavy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21am Webhamster Henry:

I'm usually not up at this hour, but I went to bed early! G'Morning, Squirrel Hill!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22am ParUbi:

We ended up with music from 60s Hong Kong. Good morning, WH Henry!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22am Doug Schulkind:

Who said Squirrels and Webhamsters couldn't get along?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22am Webhamster Henry:

AM radio would be a lot more pleasant if the Xian stations played this kind of gospel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23am Doug Schulkind:

It would be nice if Xian stations promoted actual Xian values.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25am Doug Schulkind:

"Love comes trickling down" does not exactly conjur a proper Xian image.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30am Doug Schulkind:

On the other hand, Jesus surely was the first to utter the immortal words, "Clanka a Lanka."
Avatar 7:45am annie:

i'm stuck over on another radio station...she stops at 9, i'll join in then.. :)
Avatar 7:47am annie:

a great thanksgiving-style movie was on this week. "Tender Mercies".... sigh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47am Doug Schulkind:

You have free will, annie. (Obviously my mind control efforts are a failure.)
  7:50am bigplanetnoise:

Good morning. Hey... wait. What time is it? Is there any coffee left?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51am Doug Schulkind:

Lemme microwave last night's Sanka. Will that do, bigplanetnoise?
  7:52am bigplanetnoise:

Why, yes. Sank you very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am Doug Schulkind:

After all, this is a full-service radio show.
  7:54am bigplanetnoise:

Check the wipers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56am Doug Schulkind:

Going in to buy a grape Nehi while the gas station attendant checks your fluids. Ah, those were the days.
  7:58am bigplanetnoise:

Thx. Now I’ll have grape Nehi on my mind all day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00am Doug Schulkind:

You've always been very suggestive, bigplanetnoise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01am Stanley:

They've certainly given the drummer some in that photo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02am Webhamster Henry:

What's this? The Bollywood version of Once Upon A Time In The West?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am Doug Schulkind:

Let me fill up your plate, Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03am Stanley:

Give thanks for an extended show!
Hey Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09am Webhamster Henry:

I'd suggest you folks check out Acid Jazz Hands' archives.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15am Doug Schulkind:

Yay, hooray, it's Ramblin' Ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am ParUbi:

Really enjoying this set. Daughter came in to put on Christmas music, switched it back as soon as she left the room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19am ParUbi:

I never get to listen to your show because I teach Friday mornings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22am Doug Schulkind:

Some people have their priorities all out of whack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am Doug Schulkind:

@ParUbi
Now if you assigned listening to the show to your students, that would solve everything. Just saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28am Webhamster Henry:

A WFMU curriculum would be .... educational!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:30am doctorjazz:

Give the Drummer A Drumstick!
Hi all! (Deciding if I want to deal with long lines on the child to spend too much money on Record Store Day...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am ParUbi:

Hahah, fair enough.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, doctorjazz! I believe that staying home to listen to GTDS qualifies as observing Record Store Day.
  8:32am JtotheK:

Good Morning! Doug, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34am Doug Schulkind:

Whadda ya say, JtotheK?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35am Sem:

Morning greets, Doug, and hello, right some good Drummer stream listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome welcome, Sem!
  8:38am bigplanetnoise:

I love this set so much.
  8:38am JtotheK:

I say: about to settle in with a cup of coffee and leftovers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44am Doug Schulkind:

You're a lover, not a fighter, bigplanetnoise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47am Sem:

"Castro and his Bearded Friends" was never considered as a name for a certain band at a certain point in my life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am Doug Schulkind:

Heh heh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48am Doug Schulkind:

And Congress wanted to ban gangsta rap?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49am Webhamster Henry:

Texas Ax Murderer.
  8:50am JtotheK:

Hmmm. I have that Hugh Lewis 45, but with a different flip — “It’s Dynamite To Be Egg Beater” from his album “Recreational Team-Based Activities” ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am Doug Schulkind:

I believe that particular ax murderer was from Virginia, Webhamster Henry. KNOW YOUR HISTORY!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am Doug Schulkind:

Trigger warning with the next song. It depicts awful, disgusting toxic masculinity gone amok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Webhamster Henry:

I've gotta brush up on my accent discrimination.

Did you know that if you leave a comment on an "old" playlist (that is, for a program that has already occurred), the DJ will get that comment sent to them in an email, letting them know?

Pretty cool little known feature of the WFMU playlist system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Gina Bacon:

Yes! I love it when comments pop up on past shows! Never too late..
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:33am Brian in UK:

Well you are welcome to this election of hucksters, chancers and liars over here. And those are the good ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Doug Schulkind:

The alto sax on this Sonny Boy Williams number is the great Jamaican player Joe Harriott (who we'll hear from in a bit). See if you can guess who the GUITARIST is. This was recorded in London.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

Was this Marmalade label the English one run by Giorgio Gomelsky?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:36am Brian in UK:

No, not Eric Clapton.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

That is correct, Brian in UK. Giorgio produced that Sonny Boy album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

Not Eric Clapton, but you are in the vicinity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Sem:

Well, let's face it, Slim's the King Bee.
  9:38am Jeff g.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Glad you made it. The Kenzo playlist system does weird things when you create a new episode that overlays an existing episode. Obv. I screwed something up.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:43am dutchtheo:

James Patrick Page, yes i knew about commenting but iforgot, and this tablet. Is really slowww
Swag For Life Member 9:44am WR:

I may be overlooking it, but seems no one has mentioned that the WFMU home page link to comments for this show leads to a parallel empty board. Sat in there for a while wondering if the yesterday problem with the GTD stream was yet unresolved, since Doug GTD show can sound like the GTD stream. Finally looking for info on the stream found my way here. All ya'll are here so after writing this I tried again for the 4th time and now the WFMU homepage link does come here. Twilight Zone morning here...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

You got that right, Sir. That was Mr. Jimmy Page doing some rather uninspired noodling with Sonny Boy Williamson.

Yeah, not sure how to fix that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Sem:

Good day, squire BiUK. When I was doing overnights at a university radio station, I was up to my eyeballs in the station managers' blues collection. An education in the blues @ 33&1/3 rpm.

I thought it was just grogginess, but my comment appeared on another playlist page dated today, and then disappeared.
Swag For Life Member 9:54am WR:

Yes, Listener Robert, beware the rogue comment board.
  9:55am Listener Robert:

I must've gone wherever WR went. OK, I'll reproduce it here from memory:

Groggy here. Was up in the middle of the night with post-Thanksgiving heartburn. Then dreamed about a bizarre political deal involving a still-alive Harry Truman. Then got woken up by my friend Bob's custom devotional Christian mix CD.

Happy Billy Strayhorn's birthday, everyone! Sweet Pea would have been 104.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

Fellow Jamaicans Shakespeare (Shake) Keane (trumpet) and Coleridge Goode (bass) on this date with Joe Harriott.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

Joe Harriot Quintet, never heard this track (I should create some shortcut for that last phrase, seen to say it often on these boards), really like it. Not quite "Free Form", but very cool.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

It does get more "free" as it progresses, really like it (have to look for it...a better way to spend Record Store Day).
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:20am Brian in UK:

@doctorjazz, a true music fan is not afraid to say 'Never heard of that before'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
Also look for Harriott's lp titled Abstract, from 1963. Amazing stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

A very South African lilt to this track.
Swag For Life Member 10:23am WR:

I think many of us are the type of music fan looking forward to hearing music they never before.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am ParUbi:

@WR- Ab-so-lutely
Avatar 10:25am fleep:

Here for the newness greetings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

It is the very openness of mind and ear that draws the WFMU community into a massive collective bear hug.

Speaking of bear hugs, BIG BEAR HUG to you, stream daddy fleep!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Stanley:

'ear, 'ear, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Stanley:

Brian! Spencer! How are you both?
Swag For Life Member 10:32am WR:

Haha, from the first few notes of the Roach Quartet tune, while watching for the playlist to update, I was thinking, that drummer is sure aggressive...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Gina Bacon:

Love the Heath Brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Gina Bacon:

Yay! Thanks, Doug!!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:38am Brian in UK:

Stanley, we are home alone. Lili is congregating with daughters, Xmas shopping.
I see that Portobello won 2020 Urbanism Award for Great Neighbourhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

I saw all three Heath Brothers together in the early '80s. What a family!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Y'all don't forget, two big soul sets will close out the final hour of today's Give the Drummer Some. Sixty minutes of the "Jody" phenomenon in song. Don't miss it! (I promise, no one will steal your girlfriend while you listen.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am chresti:

Morning drums and some!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Oh HEY, chresti!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:46am doctorjazz:

Roach is one of those performers who I saw play past when he should have quit, sad show (thought I was actually glad to have caught it, oddly enough).
I'd say Abdullah Ibrahim is the artist I've seen live the most often (including a fine set a few months ago at The Jazz Standard, and also the first date I had with my wife). Dizzy Gillespie is not far behind; he also was playing really often in NY in the 70s and 80s, in a great band with John Faddis).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Hey radio lovers, over on the Mothership at 3pm, DJ Monica will be filling in for Sheila B and Sophisticated Boom Boom!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Saw the Heath Brothers as well, it was a great band indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Max lived with dementia for quite some time at the end. It was excruciating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

And now, music from a grown man named Bongos.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:54am doctorjazz:

Saw a fine CURRENT band last weekend at The Jazz Standard, Harmony (Bill Frisell, Hank Roberts, Petra Haden, and Luke Bergman), beautiful music (don't go expecting to Rock n Roll though, very soft). Petra sings beautifully (I don't think the recordings of her I have capture what a great singer she is... they focus more on how unusual she is).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am coelacanth∅:

i have to catch a bus
Thanks Doug!
tchau
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Sem:

I'm thinking the Icelandic name police would not go for "Bongos" as a childs' name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

@coelacanth∅
As I used to tell all my Little Leaguers, use two hands!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am coelacanth∅:

this isn't a small bus either i might even use 3 hands
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

I've got to hand it to you, coelacanth∅.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Stanley:

Hi Brian. Portobello has seriously been affected by hipsterisation with the subsequent hike in house prices, Airbnb, holiday lettings etc. But at least you can now get a sourdough sweet Potato & zucchini fritter and smoked vegan applewood cheese bagel.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06am dutchtheo:

@ Sem, Bongosdottir sounds fine though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

This Johnny Taylor track may considered the father of all Jody songs. (The next tune is another Johnnie Taylor sung from Jody's point of view!!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:14am Brian in UK:

Geater likes a bracketed song title. Me too.

Where did Sem's comment go?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

Which comment? Nothing seems amiss on this end.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:22am dutchtheo:

I get me some scrolleritis, what a great voices last tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Jody: "I'm just doing my job."

Now THAT is some big cajones right there.

It takes me a wee while to get warmed up, Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Doug. It's almost Zzzzzzzero hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

Yes indeedy, Ken From Hyde Park!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Bill Mac is up next with Zzzzzzzzero Hour, filling in for Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time.

Avatar 11:49am Bill Mac:

What an education, Doug. Never thought there were ANY songs about Jody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

That's what Jody wanted you to think, Bill.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

I got some leftovers with my name on them, coming right up. Will enjoy them whilst I glug down some Zzzzzzero Hour!
