Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
December 1, 2019: He Would Like to Buy You Flowers
Good evening! Just popping in with a quick "hello", before I escort my Schnauzer on a walk. Hope to be tuning in via my phone, in transit. Missed out on hearing Serge, but this Night Orchid is sa-weet!
Thank you, sir! BTW, Marni Nixon = local television icon for those of us who grew up in the Pacific Northwest of the 70s/early 80s...Hostess of KOMO-TV's "Boomerang" children's show out of Seattle.
Hey DJ Gaylord Fields. I saw you walking the mean streets of Jersey City last week when i was making a delivery into NYC. Took a lot of restraint not to yell out to you. It was a moment i will not soon forget.
@mb: If it was early in the day, I appreciate your restraint. I'm not a morning person at all. Any other time, I'm more demonstrably happy to say hello to a listener.
My favorite Randy California story is that Hendrix wanted to recruit Randy for his band, but Randy's mom felt that might not be best for a high school sophomore.
That is very quotable!
...Was fortunate enuff an older sibling spoonfed me masses of music & culture - & clued me early that African-Americans had usually done things earlier - & I had better pay attention to all forms. When I borrowed Coltrane Quartet from the Library - I remember the revelation - & excitement this was like Rawk but completely different too...the joy of discovery of the endless well of Jazz has never left me...
Hey Gaylord, do you have any more info on this Sagittarius track? That combination of words is Google-proof when it comes to looking up the song. Thanks!
@mb @9:05, I was just searching to see how bad the weather has been north of NYC. In the city was just bit of icy sleet snow midday and rain since then. The rain has been heavy enough that I assume substantial snow inland and north, glad the power came back on for you, hope no further loss tonight / tomorrow.
Thanks @coela - found that, and didn't see any mention of Pisces. Then I saw your post and looked again and it's in a Japanese reissue of one of their albums, so thanks for making me look again!
@Michael98145: Small word Jazz for probly too much !
Just Blues for people who play too well ! :D
Otoh it is the AfroAmerican Classical Music - & they are the serious Musicians & deference makes sense.... One of those things there's always more to learn...which is magnificent.
BBoys track - unbelievable. Heard 'Sail On Sailor' & thot a sea voyage good metaphor their whole enterprise & intent. 'Lonely Sea' one station on the chart of it...

@ TDK60 -- yes! just so sad, he never got the recognition he so totally deserved
slugluv it's one of their best songs -this coming from a former beach boys "hater".
i like the demo version by Gina V.D'Orio better though!
Ken Freedman has a copy of it. (and io jacked it off the radio years ago)
