at first i thought they were all that windmill through different stages of dilapidation, rebuiding and dilapidation

- or at least a worthy pun...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Sem:

Hiya, fred.
Well, The Nickle Boys was neither an allegory nor a polemic, not a whimper nor a bang. Workman-like. Not a Capotesque non-fiction novel. Solidly told, but a true story w/ that kind of visceral detail has a power a writer needn't embellish. In sum, glad I read it in order to compare and contrast with the rest of Whitehead's work.
What else have you read lately?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Stanley:

I remember because it was only for 5th and 6th formers and I was only in the 3rd
Same for David Bowie a year earlier (believe it or not)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
coelacanth∅:

-and that was just about the time everyone was to understand that fairies wear boots
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Stanley:

I was old enough to see Howard Jones in his first band, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Stanley:

For a few short years a bunch of sixth formers had a lot of freedom, aided by a few hip teachers. We even had a film club, which showed, amongst others, the Lindsay Anderson film 'If'.
Copies of Oz magazine went round, too.
It all came to an end, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
fred:

@Sem: I'm about halfway through Lowry's "Hear Us O Lord..." but I'm afraid the strike will put a stop to my reading as I'll have to walk everywhere, and I don't think I'm able to read and walk at the same time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Cmurtha:

Oh, I am loving this synth part, which is saying something, because I was already over the very Bollywood singing part
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm

Now this is what I'd call the WFMU Norwegian Wood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44pm
Stanley:

The Easy Star Allstars do a great version of the Sgt Pepper album. A permanent fixture in my car.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
coelacanth∅:

it seems to me that last week it was mostly Paul's songs -and not mostly his better ones!
to be honest i couldn't take it and turned away!
so far today we've got 2 of George's and of 2 John's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
David Dichelle:

Stanley, that is true - great full album cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
Sem:

@fred, Lowry! I see the problem, his sentences are so dense reading and walking make you an accident waiting to happen.
Have a first (and only) edition of his collected letters. How he could turn out such brilliance in his usual besotted state is truly a miracle of human adaptability.
One man's opinion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
fred:

@Sem: After that, maybe Selby's The Room, but more likely is a book about Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's early works (in depth interviews, looks very interesting, but sadly in French)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
Sem:

The Room! Cripes, hope you're finding some humour to read, to leaven all the heavyness.

well when i came back last week i'd just missed revolution 9 which i wasn't happy about!
i still have to check the archive.
and some others - here comes the sun; come together...
i take it back there were some good John AND good Paul songs in there; i just didn't like the cheese treatment...but i may have left too soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:55pm

...and hey jude is one of my least favorite beatles songs; but i like this version.
