	4:30pm Sem: Hiya, fred. Well, The Nickle Boys was neither an allegory nor a polemic, not a whimper nor a bang. Workman-like. Not a Capotesque non-fiction novel. Solidly told, but a true story w/ that kind of visceral detail has a power a writer needn't embellish. In sum, glad I read it in order to compare and contrast with the rest of Whitehead's work. What else have you read lately?

	4:39pm Stanley: For a few short years a bunch of sixth formers had a lot of freedom, aided by a few hip teachers. We even had a film club, which showed, amongst others, the Lindsay Anderson film 'If'. Copies of Oz magazine went round, too. It all came to an end, though.

How he could turn out such brilliance in his usual besotted state is truly a miracle of human adaptability. One man's opinion.
