Good morning. folks! Thanks for tuning in...Massacre was my introduction to the guitar assault of Fred Frith way back when...

I think my intro to Frith came through Eno.

Hey Scraps - always loved the 3 tracks leading into each other...Hey rw!
  12:12am rw:

I could never tell which tracks were which on that LP.

Metabolist's =Stagmanaut= is another excellent 1981 album. ;-)

TomDash! Nice to hear you're back on as a regular show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15am TomDash:

After 3 club DJ nights out this past week of post-punk, dance punk (Chandra show) and 70s punks, glam, garage (two Spits shows) I needed to switch gears heavy for my FMU show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am TomDash:

thanks rw, so psyched...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:16am coelacanth∅))):

rw mine must've been via Eno as well (@12.06)
  12:19am rw:

So far I've crossed off six of nine things on my "to do" list for today. Not bad. I might even get one more done before the day's over!

Coel, I was trying to remember what Frith I discovered from there. Could have been I bought the Guitar Solos LP. Those Eno records introduced me to SO MANY great artists back then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19am Scяaps:

I really don't remember what my intro to Frith was. Eno, Art Bears, Ralph records..... it's all muddled now

you guys talking about Robert Fripp? I got to see him with the league of crafty guitarists one time that was pretty damn cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23am Scяaps:

Fred Frith
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25am Scяaps:

Thirty years ago my roommate/friend were always arguing Frith vs Fripp
  12:25am rw:

cc, It's a bit of a blur but that could have been my experience too.

Frith and Fripp seem to get mixed up a lot! choggie, that sounds like a damn cool show.
  12:26am rw:

I fall on the side of Frith.
  12:26am choggie:

oh, never heard of mr. Firth
  12:28am rw:

choggie, Fred Frith was the guitarist on the opening track (Massacre). That LP (Killing Time) is fucking amazing if you ever get a chance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28am coelacanth∅))):

i know more of Fripp's output so it's not a fair assessment. i really dig 'em both though.
very different
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30am coelacanth∅))):

rw - can is another one via Eno (Jaki Liebezeit on before & after science)
...and Rodelius and Möbius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am coelacanth∅))):

(as well as my first indication that Phil Collins might be cool after all!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31am Scяaps:

Just because you recommended Fred Lane to me, choggie, I am going to say you at least are going to be interested in Frith.... there's a lot of Frith out there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32am coelacanth∅))):

did Frith play with Patti Smith at some point?
was that a hallucination?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33am mariano:

Perhaps neither here nor there, but wasn't Frith the name of the rabbit god in Watership Down?
  12:34am rw:

I didn't know Jaki Liebezeit was on that record. I found Can through normal channels, I think. Probably from listening to weird radio late at night. Fuck. I haven't changed since I was a teenager!

This is gorgeous, this Delphine Dora.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48am TomDash:

Hey mariano - sorry I can't find it right now. it was off the double CD reissue of Periodik Mindtrouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52am mariano:

Thanks Tom, I'm sure that's good enough to go on!
  1:02am rw:

Yes. Everybody likes The Beatles. This is a cool version of Flying!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06am Scяaps:

like Juice B Crypts more every time. definitely better than La Di Da Di, reversing the trend downward of their albums...
  1:06am rw:

I'm not sure everybody likes the Stones. And this is a cool version of 2000 Light Years from Home!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13am coelacanth∅:

definitely have known several people who didn't like the beatles.
def known several x more people who didn't like the 'stones.
then again many people "don't like" things because they're not open to liking them.
- and yet others say they don't like something because they're so insecure that they're afraid they'll be considered part of "the masses" if they like the beatles...or the 'stones...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14am coelacanth∅:

(but i do think some people i've known genuinely disliked the beatles. mostly "jazz" guys)
  1:15am johnzo:

Not everybody does like the Beatles oddly... I believe Anthony Fontano “The internet’s busiest music nerd” of the Needle Drop did a “stinkpiece” video on people who say “the Beatles are for men
  1:17am johnzo:

I like the stones a lot but I do not condone marrying 15 year olds haha... just to make that clear. But the music is great. I heard a great mashup of the altamont tape on fmu called @why are we fighting” by flex unger. That shizz is my jam
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17am coelacanth∅:

"the beatles are for men"?!! hahaha...
i don't even care what the rational is for that one!
  1:18am johnzo:

Well I’m sure AF tore them a new one so it might be worth checking out lol... don’t think I’ve seen that one tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19am mariano:

It's inevitable, at some point someone's going to have a go at every sacred cow. I've seen stuff online claiming the Beatles suck, most overrated band in history, etc. I react like Judge Smails in Caddyshack when Dangerfield tells him his country club sucks, and he answers "S-S-S-SUUUCKS?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20am coelacanth∅:

oh yeah that mashup's rad!
i like the 'stones a lot...most of what they did up until the absurdly overrated exile on main st. then that album and goats head soup are good but not great. after that it gets very patchy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21am mariano:

"BUY Bushwood?!? Youuuu..."
  1:22am johnzo:

I mean I think technically they’re the best band... in the sense that they have the most good songs. I care more about songwriting than musicianship tho... not that they’re not phenomenal musicians just not technically the best. But 3 amazing songwriters in one group? Can’t beat that... & no offense To Ringo Octopus’s Garden is a very fun song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22am Scяaps:

I have a friend who hates the Beatles, every song (she says), but loves the Kinks. I just don't bring up the subject
  1:23am johnzo:

There’s no way to objectively say tho & I grew up on the Beatles so I’m biased. But I don’t listen to them that much anymore... go in phases I guess.
  1:23am johnzo:

The kinks are great too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:24am mariano:

Oh no, you don't like Exile? Maybe it's my age, but it always seemed to me that Tattoo You was the last true Stones album. But by that point I'd quit keeping up with the newer stuff.

Thanks Tom - I actually found the album on YouTube from the info you gave me: www.youtube.com...
  1:24am johnzo:

I mean I put the Beatles up near the top but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of bands very nearly as good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25am coelacanth∅:

mariano i have that "beatles are extremely overrated" conversation fairly often. a few times/year i'll say.
i cannot be objective because that was my introduction to rock & roll at the age of 4-5 and our family sat around and sang along with the whole album on weekends.
i do know they were extraordinary though.
  1:26am johnzo:

Exile’s a good one tho I haven’t listened to it in a while... at this point technically my favorite band is “whatever they’re playing on WFMU” cause I’ve virtually stopped DJing for myself haha... maybe that’s bad? Idk.
  1:27am johnzo:

Cool me too! I used to sit in front of the ole’ hi fi & lay on the floor listening to Beatles tapes
  1:27am johnzo:

*coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28am coelacanth∅:

right johnzo i didn't see your post while i typed that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29am mariano:

I'm like you @johnzo: a lifelong Beatles devotee, but I don't listen to them that much. Once a year or every couple of years I listen to a good bit of the discography, it's a special occasion. @coela: very much the same for me, I discovered an older cousin's Beatles albums when I was 9, and it was my first musical awakening. It honestly doesn't bother me anymore if someone slags them off though, no skin off my hump.
  1:30am rw:

I guess it's possible young people who grew up on non-rock based music wouldn't like The Beatles. Maybe oldsters too who grew up on Glen Miller. And coel, possibly super-nerd jazzers. Maybe I take it back... Naw, I stand by my earlier statement.
  1:31am johnzo:

I’m the same way Mariano... usually when I’m going through a rough patch emotionally
  1:33am johnzo:

I picked up a copy of heh Jude just for the novelty... didn’t know that was a official US release , figures it was some weird bootleg
  1:33am johnzo:

*figured
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34am Scяaps:

johnzo, of course the kinks are great. what i meant is, i can't believe she loves the kinks but despises the beatles, without something motivating her, which i'm not going to go into.
  1:35am johnzo:

Maybe she associates the Beatles with a pretentious ex boyfriend or something
  1:36am johnzo:

It can’t be that she hates fun... if she likes the kinks. It’s a conundrum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am mariano:

@rw: I've got some friends who are serious jazz musicians, and I've been shocked by some of their listening choices. A lot of it sounds like smooth jazz or new age to my unrefined ears, so maybe they don't have much room to talk, lol. @johnzo: yeah, the Beatles are good for rough times. Thing that gets me is that whenever I give them a listen, there's very often some nuance I hadn't noticed before.
  1:37am johnzo:

I think the vast majority of Beatles haters probably haven’t heard much or are merely contrarians by nature.
  1:38am johnzo:

True Mariano... & now they have YouTube videos where they isolate various tracks from different songs, some of which are not audible at all on the records
  1:39am BH:

yeah, there's a lot of good Beatles stuff that probably coincided with them getting into LSD and going to India a bunch..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am mariano:

Yeah, there's some really interesting YouTube stuff analyzing Beatles tracks.
  1:39am johnzo:

Why do I have a feeling there’s someone out there gritting their teeth & saying to themselves “do not comment! Do not comment!” Lol... I know you’re out there Beatles haters! Eh. Don’t really care tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am coelacanth∅:

i didn't say i don't like exile!
just very VERY highly hyped when i think it was a turn toward stale for the band.
the first record is mostly great. the 2nd one? eh. too much piano. too much overproduction and melodrama. that gospelly crap is crap. sorry! then they drag out that Robert Johnson song and don't even do anything with it. happy is good, not great. "sweet black angel" -patronizing, anyone?
etc.
it's like they had this amazing musician in the band who had so much to do with their best album, sticky fingers, and the 2's egos were like "oh no we don't need him we got this" but they'd already begun to dry up by then. they should've let Mick Taylor move in to a songwriting/arrangement role. (instead of ripping him off and not giving him songwriting credits)
  1:40am johnzo:

I like the Hollyhobs... tho I’m sure there’s much more obscure detailed ones that get into crazy minutia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41am Scяaps:

there's david thomas, who believes (if you can take him seriously) that the beatles will be forgotten in fifty years, because they are british, and only americans can make real rock
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41am coelacanth∅:

Scraps i knew what you meant. they're not the same but yeah similar enough that it's suspect.
  1:42am rw:

mariano, my son has music arguments (discussions) with a buddy of his who sounds like your jazz friends. I think they're listening to subtle shit that doesn't matter and doesn't make for interesting music. Purity of tone, for example over more important things. Not that purity of tone is irrelevant, just that... well, you know; they're missing the big picture.
  1:42am johnzo:

BH someone on YouTube was saying that George Martin was not a fan of George Harrison’s psychedelic Indian stuff... they didn’t list a source. But GM was kinda square compared to them. And older. Not that he wasn’t integral to their development...
  1:44am BH:

Rubber Soul and Revolver were really quality (except "Run for your life", we won't speak of that one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am coelacanth∅:

George Martin was not a fan of anything too out there that they did. that's why Paul was his favorite. (by far)
Geoff Emerick really deserves at least as much credit as Martin for all the innovations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am TomDash:

wow - seems like a spirited discussion going on here. Will have to check out later! ha...
  1:44am johnzo:

Shit man there are still plenty of people who think that Paul is dead... and that he’s Vivian Stanshall from the Bonzo Dog Doo Da Band which totally blew my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44am coelacanth∅:

(haha although Paul was Emerick's favorite too!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am mariano:

@coela: come to think of it, I rarely venture into the second disc of Exile. @Scяaps: wait, what now? Dave who?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45am coelacanth∅:

Tom your selections are fuel!
  1:46am rw:

Tom, you started it when you asked if anybody likes The Beatles. You KNOW that's a loaded question!
  1:47am rw:

Oh, yeah, and that Massacre track too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am Scяaps:

I can't really tell how much Emerick was really a part because apparently he hated Martin and took every opportunity to run him down.... or so I thought
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am TomDash:

oh I know I did rw! haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48am Scяaps:

mariano, David Thomas, as in Pere Ubu
  1:49am rw:

I gave my buddy a CD rip of The Modern Dance recently to listen in his car and I think I converted him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am mariano:

Ohhhhh.... wow. Wouldn't have occurred to me, it's so nationalistic. Then again I don't know that much about his views. What a weird claim to make though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51am mariano:

*Was responding to @Scяaps, forgot to add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54am coelacanth∅:

mariano, as a sign that exile is greatly overhyped i just typed "exile" and that album still shows up, 5 hits down on duckduckgo!
...and i'm amending my assessment! (and not assuming anyone cares!)
- all 5 songs on side 1 are great; then sweet virginia & torn and frayed from side 2; then turd on the run on side 3. that's about it for great songs on exile!
happy and all down the line are good. (not great)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56am mariano:

@coela: No argument there, wasn't really familiar with the hype aspect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59am mariano:

Thanks Tom, great gabbin' with y'all. Maybe continue the discussion at the next stop!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02am mariano:

Oh derp, another hour left, lol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05am coelacanth∅:

i went out with a beatles hater -but i never really bought it!
she's from australia and claimed the beatles copied everything they did from others before them -many from australia. she made many mixtapes for me, which i still love. one is called "stuff to make you hate the beatles"
bands that she figured the beatles stole from.
...i think she 1) wanted to be contrary 2) was a bit nationalistic
  2:08am johnzo:

As long as we can all agree that Paul is not Vivian Stanshall I think you’re all entitled to your opinions and they’re perfectly valid.
  2:10am rw:

Sounds so much like NEU!

The Ultravox, I mean.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14am coelacanth∅:

Scraps (@1.47) i never heard that Emerick hated Martin...though it'd be somewhat understandable.
by most (all?) accounts by the band and others Emerick, once he came on board, was the one who came up with the solutions most of the time. John never knew technical stuff, but he knew what he wanted; so he'd say things like "i want to sound like i'm under water" or "...on a windy mountain" and Geoff would figure out how to get the sound. Geoff's the one who close-miced the strings on elenor rigby. Martin never would've done that because classical music was his main interest and his main job at emi, and close-micing strings would be like bowing an electric guitar.

but Martin got all the credit.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:25am Scяaps:

coel, but who gets more credit, the one knows he wants a sound and can describe it, or the one who takes that comment and turns into a sound? Both, right; but for me, the wants-a-sound guy gets more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26am TomDash:

g'night rw! Hey fred, welcome. Coming to the final stretch...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27am Scяaps:

also, that's why john/paul/george gets more of the credit than Martin

exactly. they're the ones who had the ideas. maybe Ringo too. he certainly had input -evn in other's songs, occasionally; though he knew to be very subtle about how to suggest it!

there's a picture on the stickywebs of John propped upside-down on a chair, singing into a microphone on the floor. apparently that was one of his ideas to get a certain sound for tomorrow never knows.
it wasn't satisfactory so he described what he wanted to Geoff and that's when his voice was run through a lesley speaker -which is how we got the sound we all know in that song.

One thing I didn't know till fairly recently is that it's Paul who plays the guitar solo on Tomorrow Never Knows. He also made the tape loops.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46am Scяaps:

i hafta go lie down as usual -- cheers, everybody. great show, Tom

yeah Paul was playing with tape a bit. there's a sound collage he did that some act like is kind of a holy grail but paul wont release it, most likely because it sucks!
but it's cool he was doing that.
...both he and George played lead guitar on tnk so they're both in the mix
Paul did play lead on taxman though. George's song but apparently he wasn't happy with anything he was coming up with and handed it to Paul!
- but then on old brown shoe (one of my faves) George plays all guitars AND bass -and listen to that bass!

i remember photostadt from that very brief moment in history that wpix-fm was good, 1979.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51am mariano:

Yeah, that bass run during "When I grow up I'll be a singer..." is amazing. That's right, forgot Paul plays on Taxman. There's some other unreleased song as well, something along the lines of You Know My Name.

Thanks Tom! Maybe try an obscure one next time. With the listeners here, that might still resonate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57am coelacanth∅:

...but then, tomorrow never knows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58am coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59am coelacanth∅:
