Hi Kris. I’m guessing you’ll be out next week as well.

The stream was playing Monte Carlo by the French Connection. A solid tune.

Hey guys!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I probably will as well. I’ll be staying at my parents and we’re Jewish so no Christmas for us and bars are sad on Christmas I find.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s Hanukkah next week too so we’re going to my cousin’s house on Christmas Day for a latke party. My cousins are all nice people but they’re so boring.

Hey Kris, good to have you back, mate

Almost got you a new listener tonight Kris but he didn’t sleep well last night so he went to sleep earlier. He’s an old friend of Larry, Randy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
ParUbi:

I'm agnostic, so I've always wanted to have a solstice celebration in the dark of night with wailing and the clashing of stones against unknown surfaces
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Kris, My mom wants to come over on Christmas, which is great, just as long as I don't have to go get her and take her back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I would call my Jewishness cultural rather than religious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Franco you clearly know that’s the case already
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well no, Matt I don't. But if I keep saying it. ....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18pm
ParUbi:

How often does she need that ride?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm

I’m just messing with you but from the way you worded it it’s clearly happened more than once.

ParUbi, anytime she wants to come over.

Oh now I know what you're talking about. Great stuff, but not the hyper-obscurities that I fetishize!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Fair enough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm
Matt from New Orleans:

It’s really hard to cover an Otis song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm
Matt from New Orleans:

You should add that to discogs Kris
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m an idiot. I was looking at the wrong Mr Mann.

"96 Tears" is one of a few select dozen tracks that always always sound great to me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I was waiting for the accordion breakdown
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I saw him at Jazz Fest in my youth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Little Danny:

Accordion in the context of '50s R&B/rock 'n' roll is always welcomed here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Shirley Bergeron that is. I went to Jazz Fest with my parents at some point in the 80s and I remember hearing that song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm
Little Danny:

Did you grow up in the New Orleans area, Matt?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Nope. In NY. I had cousins down here that we would visit from time to time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Matt from New Orleans:

They left after Katrina and moved to Chicago.
  10:57pm
Doug Schulkind:

Wish I could position a 500-pound drummer at your front door, Kris. Ready to lay knuckles on knuckleheads.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Matt from New Orleans:

They held onto their house which sustained no damage for years before finally selling it but wouldn’t let me live there. I don’t talk to them any longer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Matt from New Orleans:

They didn’t rent it. It just sat empty and they tried a few times to get me to check on it but got the hint eventually and stopped calling me.
Avatar 11:01pm
Kris Holmes:

Doug, for real!!! Ugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Little Danny:

One of my all-time Ray Charles tracks.

@Kris: Do I remember you playing a Spanish-language version at some point?
Avatar 11:02pm
Kris Holmes:

Yes "El Tren"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Little Danny:

Do you know Bobby Bland's (also-great) version of this, Kris? It's even darker sounding...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Are you going to the Alamo City Soul club reunion Kris?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Not even sure how that even got on my radar?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Getting together is a good one
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Agreed. Forgot about that Kris.
Avatar 11:29pm
Kris Holmes:

Man, 7 people favorited this song on a show called The Modern World with Trouble
Avatar 11:30pm
Kris Holmes:

Which also leads to the musing that DJs that have the same name as other DJs is hellishly confusing.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
JtotheK:

Jimmy McGriff, nice one! Hi Kris, hope your week is improving. Seasonal Greeting, everyone.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:32pm
JtotheK:

b/w - Trouble spins some jams on her Modern World program! And her show puts me onto mellow ambient music all the time, too.
Avatar 11:33pm
Kris Holmes:

Jason, we got your Xmas card thank you & yes, this week has been better (although being worse would be a tough call)
Avatar 11:33pm
Kris Holmes:

wait, this Trouble is a girl? That's even more confusing!!!!

Someday I hope to find a copy of Gene Chandler 'Mr Big Shot' .
Avatar 11:38pm
Kris Holmes:

oh yeah some classic latin soul 45s in there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Matt from New Orleans:

I’m a shoes man myself, not really, like the song but overplayed on the northern scene
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:45pm
JtotheK:

Yeah area shop gets Gene Chandler 45s in ALL THE TIME and I've picked up multiple copies of "I Can Take Care of Myself" over the years but never seen Mr Big Shot. Except for a cheap reissue, which I bought. Oh and his record You Threw A Lucky Punch is a nice answer record, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Matt from New Orleans:

Clearly you’re not as lucky as the guy with two NM copies for sale for $400 on discogs
Avatar 11:47pm
Kris Holmes:

Matt, yeah Shoes is kind of rinsed, I don't mind it but don't feel the need to reach for it.
Jason: Gene Chandler on those pre-Mercury labels is never bad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
Little Danny:

Bland's read of Houston classic "Honey Child" is still my fave disc by him
Avatar 11:50pm
Kris Holmes:

LOL $400 is about $200 more than it's worth?
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:51pm
JtotheK:

@Matt - both copies are from Craig!
@Dan - Honey Child is a fave of mine, too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
Little Danny:

Now I'm thinking Bland's version is actually the first.

Hi Jason! There are some very good versions of it by the Sunglows and white boy Johnny Williams, too
Avatar 11:52pm
Kris Holmes:

Just picked up an extra Honey Child the other week!!!! So here it comes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
Little Danny:

Well hey now there's a real DJ for ya! Thanks mate, never tire of this 'un
Avatar 11:54pm
Kris Holmes:

Bland is the original. Sunglows is indeed great. Local San Antonio group Eddie & The Valiants currently do a great version live too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm

Thanks Kris. Enjoyed the tunes. Hope things keep getting better. Probably be here next week. Have a great night everyone.
