Happy One Year Anniversary! :-)

DJ GeorgyGirl:

That was pretty smooth ;-)
  4:01pm
Martinibomb:

Thanks! Well that seemed to work well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Were you trying to bypass the silence bump between shows?
  4:02pm
Martinibomb:

yeh exactly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

yay! smooth as silk, baby!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm

I didn't notice anything, which is a success story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Interesting ... ! :-)
So you connected just slightly before you hit play?
I might try that on Friday.
  4:03pm
Martinibomb:

yup and it didn't connect until you disconnected I clicked it about 30sec before
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm

Thanks Rich! Wow one year can you believe it?? went by way to fast. Had a blast with all of you. Super fun times making radio.

Or top three fave moments

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:20pm

I saw them live in 2008 - brilliant show! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - have we done you proud here at Sheena? :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
ParUbi:

It is a marvel that she had a show on WFMU-- two things/people I love that I didn't know had anything to do with each other
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
Rich in Washington:

Here's hoping Vicki's Do or DIY has a 2020 season.
Avatar 4:23pm
Mr Fab:

Another birthday boy! Tell you what, MB - today, you can play whatever you want, OK?

Oh right, we're freeform. But yeah, can't believe it's been a year already. We started with 4 shows, there are now 17 on the schedule. And you all - DJs and listeners - have done me so proud I can't even say. Really had no idea how this crazy contraption would take off. It's been amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
ParUbi:

I used to use Soleilmoon and Brainwashed to coordinate my off-mainstream music taste
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm
Rich in Washington:

I think this year, she had so many creative irons in the fire at once that she couldn't do her usual Summer show on WFMU.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
ParUbi:

It's nice to have this place as a resource now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
Rich in Washington:

That's cool ParUbi! I used to follow both pretty closely back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Super proud to be part of the Sheena Family :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
ParUbi:

There was also this cool record store near my sister's place in Portland, right across from Powell's
  4:26pm
Martinibomb:

I gotta start doing some art for sheena soon that's my new year resolution
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
ParUbi:

@Rich, yeah, I used to get their little catalog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Rich in Washington:

Thanks for all you do, Mr. Fab! I feel like we're part of a motley band of pirates, brigands, ne'er do wells.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
Rich in Washington:

Hmmm. I wonder what store that might've been, ParUbi. I recall there being a shop across from Powell's, but can't remember what it was. Soleilmoon used to have a shop in PDX as well. They're still in Portland, but no longer have a brick-and-mortar store.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - you are OUR Fearless Leader! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Rich in Washington:

The recently stopped distributing Death In June merch, so I wonder how they're doing, businesswise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

YAY for Sheena's Jungle Room!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
ParUbi:

I think it was called the Ozone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

oh, i remember that store!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:31pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh yeah. The Ozone! The dude that ran that had a radio show on KBOO, too. Then the Ozone moved to Burnside and shortly thereafter closed up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
ParUbi:

It was great! Always had obscure things in stock. Hafler Trio, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Rich in the Lower Columbia Basin:

Hi Granny!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Rich in the Lower Columbia Basin:

yeah, the Ozone was great.

Sorry I went quiet - just had a coughing fit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
Rich in the Lower Columbia Basin:

Oh wow! This is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:35pm
ParUbi:

I saw that Soleilmoon was listed as a hate group briefly for distributing DiJ
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Fantastic playlist today, MB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Rich in the Lower Columbia Basin:

Yeah. It was an unfortunate situation but I think they ultimately did the right thing.
  4:38pm
Martinibomb:

Thanks Gerogy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
solo mon:

Hi all! happy anniversary MB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Rich in the Lower Columbia Basin:

I sort of dig some of DiJ's earlier stuff, but find Douglas P's nazi fetish and repeated dismissal/defenses of it untenable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
Rich Gump:

That's all I have to say about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Mort Garson!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
ParUbi:

@Rich. I think so too. Knowing them from the other side, I was baffled and shocked that anyone would think that. But Douglas P has certainly been an irresponsible @#$% for playing around with that imagery
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
solo mon:

Spent a lot of money at the Ozone and it was called the ooze before that when it was in NW portland
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:41pm

IF you start a cult it should have crochet outfits
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm

The best cults have house bands.

And it should be an opensource cult where people can freely edit and distribute the *code*. hahah
  5:44pm
Martinibomb:

Babies love stray dogs?
Avatar 5:44pm

Every cult is headed by a man who preaches "free love." They always seem to get this harem of female devotees. Which is probably why they started their cult in the first place.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm
solo mon:

Im thinking the source family meets amway
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:45pm

Whatever happened to the cult that was selling candles and cutout records out of vans in the 70s? Maybe that wasn't a cult, but they seemed like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
solo mon:

Hey MB do you have bullfrog by bobby darin?

I wanna be in a scented candle cult!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
solo mon:

ahahah i looove this song! thank youuu
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
Rich in Warshington:

I remember walking around outside of a mall as a preteen and some van pulled up with a young guy and girl and they asked if I wanted to buy a groovy, psychedelic looking candle. I said no. They then asked if I liked music and handed me a handful of new records with cutouts on them. One of them was Bluejeans & Moonbeams by Captain Beefheart. They asked how much money I had, which was about a buck fifty. The girl grabbed the records back from me and the van peeled out and disappeared.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
solo mon:

@rich i think that was just my parents
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:52pm
Rich in Warshington:

But a week or so later, my older brother came home with one of the candles and a small stack of new cutout records, one of which was the Beefheart record. I thought it stunk, cuz I was like eleven.

Looks like I've been missing a great show but I got here just in time for Gal Costa!

I distinctly remember the other records, a Bill Wyman solo record, a Dr. John record, just cutout fodder. I think that's when I learned that cutout records were a thing. I didn't really get into buying my own records for a few years.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Rich in Warshington:

I used to like to sleep to the streaming channel Sleepbot, but for some reason, they'd have ambient artists who'd suddenly put some super disturbing sound and/or repetitive noises on. I still like Soma FM's Drone Zone. I sometimes like sleeping to Over The Edge episodes if I can't seem to disengage my brain. It sort of nullifies my logic circuit so I can drift off to sleep.
Avatar 6:26pm
Linda Lee:

I liked drone zone for a while. haven't been there lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm
solo mon:

Thanks MB goes great w your conspiracy interviews
Avatar 6:28pm

I liked done zone for ambient sounds for daytime, though. not sleeping.
  6:29pm
Martinibomb:

I have lived the conspiracy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm
Rich in Warshington:

I think I burned out on DZ for a while and then discovered Sleepbot, which is supposedly purpose-built for sleeping. Which is weird, because so much of the ambient tracks on there are just really unsettling. I just got kind of tired of waking up in the middle of the night thinking a pipe had burst, or giant armadillos are chewing my roof tiles off or something.
Avatar 6:30pm
Linda Lee:

that sounds aggravating, really.
nothing needed for sleep here, especially. i live in the country. dead quiet aside of ambient natural sounds. very nice. if needed I can take a little red-vein kratom. done.

@Fab about Orb/KLF I wasn't sure if maybe KLF had sampled it? I know Orb did for sure which yeh is his other project but it's such a great sample I wondered if it had been used before that?

Rich in Warshington:

Somewhere I have the actual audio from which the sample comes from 'what was the sky like when you were young'.

Rich in Warshington:

The Orb was KLF's Jim Cauty and Alex Patterson. It was post KLF, maybe also existing alongside KLF.

Mr Fab:

Don't know, but those guys operated under so many names, i was never sure who did what: KLF, Orb, Timelords, JAMMS, probly more...

a dronezone sleeper here! but yes, sudden changes in volume, surprisingly unsettling atmospheres etc. can be rather counterproductive. aphex twin's th1 is a good example of this: sometimes you will asleep with it, sometimes you will stay up and worry everything.

huomenta: It's weird what I'll sleep to. I sort of need a barrage of noise around me, probably from when we had lots of kids living in the house, people with different sleep patterns, etc.
