This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Explorers! let's do one last show for 2019
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm listener james from westwood:

Evening, Evan and all!!
Avatar 7:01pm hyde:

hello!
Avatar 7:01pm Flash Strap:

Hi James, Hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:03pm Flash Strap:

Tonight: a track from each show of the year. nothin' but gold
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm WR:

You've seduced me with Ras Michael, I hope the rest of the relationship matches the high expectations you've created.
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

hi WR - this is not in fact Ras Michael but he is coming verry soon
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm chresti:

Hello!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Count Ossie is likely the biggest influence on the Ras Michael sound though
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Chresti! wonderful to see you
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

love this Brainticket track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Doug Schulkind:

You know how I got my brainticket? I bought it from a scalper.

You've been a great audience. I'm here all week!
Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

get out the calipers, we need to measure this scalper

hi Doug!
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

so much soul in this Ras Michael track, god I love it
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

cool drums on this Ray Kinney, I think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm WR:

oh oh, I was so happy I wrote Ras Michael when yes I well knew it was Count Ossie. My brother had the 3 LP set in the 70s and I've not heard it since but the sound is firmly imprinted. thank you for it and the Ras Michael too.
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Ah my great pleasure! extremely cool of your brother, by the way
Avatar 7:21pm Flash Strap:

one of my favorite compilations of the year, this Canary release
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm WR:

It's fun scoping your playlist notebook page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm doctorjazz:

In feel a sudden urge to yodel!
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

one of my less messy ones, since I've already "done" all these songs, but you get a sense of the "method" from this
Avatar 7:24pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doc! feel free at any time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm chresti:

Walking is healthy
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

so true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm chresti:

..says the notebook
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

makes it even truer
Avatar 7:30pm hyde:

i forgot about the marathon Jungle. so good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm chresti:

yes. The notebook is wise
Avatar 7:31pm Flash Strap:

one of my favorite musical discoveries to have come to me as a prize to give away, this song
  7:32pm Quinn:

To me!
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

every week i flip to a new page in my book, which in this case is some kind of reading primer for families, and collage in all the scrap whites from the week's work and write my notes on top of that
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

Quinn! oh how grand!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm chresti:

I need to listen to the January 3 episode, I think we were in SF which means I didn't give it my undivided attention.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm chresti:

Do you use Yes paste?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm chresti:

Reading for 3rd and 4th year of high school, it says at the top. I love notebooks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm chresti:

I don't remember you playing any duds, Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm chresti:

This is gold!
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: Jan. 3 was a nice one, I thought!
I actually pretty much only use blick glue stick
Avatar 7:47pm Flash Strap:

Collage is so incredible, i loved doing that show
Avatar 7:49pm hyde:

the baroque show! i learned stuff that week
Avatar 7:50pm Flash Strap:

me too
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

i started listening to this Max Romeo track a LOT that week, and haven't really stopped since. one of his best
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

just a great, mad Perry production that's so much fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm chresti:

One of my favorites
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm chresti:

And the backing vocals..!
Avatar 7:55pm Little Danny:

Greetings from Austin
Avatar 7:55pm Flash Strap:

all-time great backing vocals, impossible not to join in
Avatar 7:56pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD in Austin! I didn't know you were off this week, I might have filled for you
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

not sure how i missed knowing that
Avatar 7:58pm Little Danny:

I think it got lost in the flurry of holiday DJ fill-ins. I'm not sure if anyone is scheduled to sub. If so, please go as long as you want!
Avatar 8:00pm Flash Strap:

i gotta split after this or i might just wing it
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

what an unbelievable piece of music Hum Dono is
Avatar 8:02pm hyde:

wing it! wing it! (note: i'll probably fall sleep at 9:30)
Avatar 8:03pm hyde:

a-sleep
Avatar 8:04pm Flash Strap:

A+sleep, imo
Avatar 8:06pm hyde:

this song is super cool
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

incredibly cool - Manzanita occasionally pulls out some of the most otherworldly, hip cumbia out there. not all the time, but every once in a great while
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

what a melody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm chresti:

You know, if you played songs more than once, I wouldn't mind.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

these 2 cumbia shows were a personal highlight i have to say, so much fun to dig into. more cumbia planned for 2020 for sure
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: I do a lot, I just try to be real sneaky so it feels new every time
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

i will probably play every one of these songs again, if i can manage it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm chresti:

Honestly, I wouldn't notice and if I did I wouldn't mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Doug Schulkind:

An inspired choice among inspired choices. You've got the magic touch, Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm chresti:

Inspired stream breaks, too.
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

honored, Doug, truly honored. honoured, even
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

ah damn more stream breaks, no thanks
Avatar 8:23pm Flash Strap:

still just as in love with bembeya jazz nat'l as when this show aired. got burned on a vinyl copy of this album though and still crying about it... had the wrong disc inside.
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

what a legendary guitar track. monster
Avatar 8:25pm Flash Strap:

whole rhythm section is insane
Avatar 8:27pm Flash Strap:

it's socialism train or barbarism uber, get with it
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

ah, what cool blurbling
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm Doug Schulkind:

Hum Dono is my spirit animal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, Flash, heading out now!
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

fond adios doc!
Avatar 8:50pm Flash Strap:

or should i say bon voyage
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

hefti in a very cool mode on this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Hefti is my bag.
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

hee hee that took me a minute. i knew it was there, somewhere
Avatar 9:06pm Flash Strap:

this Mary Lou Williams really sends me
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

a top alessandroni track for me
  9:23pm Ignore Function:

Great show tonight, FS.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

Hi IF! thanks pal!
Avatar 9:29pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Evan, Explorers
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

hi Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Doug Schulkind:

Gotta go walk the dog. I've been re-enjoying this music immensely, Flash.
Avatar 9:36pm Flash Strap:

a pleasure to please you my friend, and all my best to your soon-to-be-chilly & relieved dog
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm chresti:

Are there squalls over there, still?
Avatar 9:38pm Flash Strap:

not much going on here in NC, just chilly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Doug Schulkind:

Only squall alerts here, but nary an actual squall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm WR:

Welcome coelacanth∅. I'm busy washing dishes. Doug is walking the dog, you have to hold the fort down. (What the hell does that even mean? )
Avatar 9:40pm coelacanth∅:

squawking over here but no squalling
Avatar 9:41pm Flash Strap:

the fort is wriggling and attempting to escape, you have to hold it down
Avatar 9:41pm coelacanth∅:

hey WR yeah those forts must've been pretty flimsy
one little squall and that's it; airborne
Avatar 9:51pm coelacanth∅:

...i definitely recognise that collage work but is that lower image your own notes in preparation for a program Flash?
Avatar 9:53pm Flash Strap:

you got it C.!
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

this one, in fact
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm WR:

If you were really inside my brain you would be playing Civilization by Keith Hudson. But that's ok, probably better that we don't totally coincide in Reggae choices
Avatar 9:56pm coelacanth∅:

i wish i could zoom in on it! looks so disorganised but i think my notes for sound pieces also look disorganised to others -but i have a formula and it works, as you likely do
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

@WR: ah man for some reason I don't have "too Expensive" what's up with that? next time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm WR:

Also I am limited in the Keith Hudson albums I've heard.
Avatar 9:57pm Flash Strap:

that one's not my favorite at all but they're all good, he's amazing
Avatar 9:58pm coelacanth∅:

i think all my Keith Hudson records are comps. i should explore more
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm WR:

Thank you for the many great shows this year. I'll be doing some archive listening.
Avatar 9:59pm coelacanth∅:

so no one filling in for Danny? and you're away next week?
(didn't hear all that)
Avatar 10:00pm Flash Strap:

@WR: my great great pleasure, thank you so much for listening
Avatar 10:01pm Flash Strap:

yeah no one filling for danny tonight & I'm off next week (but back for the 1st thurs. of 2020)
Avatar 10:02pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Evan! enjoy your time away and see ya next year!
'night everyone
Avatar 10:02pm Flash Strap:

thanks to every explorer present and away, much love, good night. see you next year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm chresti:
