Welcome welcome welcome!!!
  9:13am Listener Robert:

I'm confused as all hell here, because this playlist page and John Allen's have the same animated GIF above the playlist.
Swag For Life Member 9:14am WR:

Fantastic start. When this hits the archive I'm going to put that first cut with shenai & percussion on repeat. I've yet to get enough Chinese oboe / shenai or whatever it may be called. Ah, now another tune featuring it. This will help wake me for sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Robert
It's a new edict by WFMU station manager Ken. We are all trapped liked slaves. Save us!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Webhamster Henry:

WFMU has clearly gone a playlist system where AIs determine the optimal engagement gif of the day.
Avatar 9:15am still b/p:

So I goes to check out Karawane, and listened to bits of recitations with this music accompanying. Which turns out to be right and good.
  9:15am Listener Robert:

Doug, I'm sure it's a cost-cutting measure. Ask Ms. Jones how much these ani-GIFs cost the station monthly.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:15am Brian in UK:

Not put up all the pictures, photographs etc on the walls since moving. Have some qualms (I know Rennies can fix that) as there is a large print of Shephard Fairey's take on Aung San Suu Kyi that I really like but odd things are going on in Burma (was it ever thus). Think that it must be hung, whatever.

After the show, I dash in to work for my half-day (my typical Friday), then I am off until January 2. The benefit of having a University as my employer. Wow wow wow!
  9:55am bigplanetnoise:

@Doug - what will you do with all that free time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Gina Bacon:

That's a nice break, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
Just download more music. What else is there to do?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am KimSorise:

@Doug - most definitely. I do remember, however, when I used to fight against this time off. Recovering from a journalist's mindset that there are no days off; it took about 3 years of working through extended breaks to understand their necessity. Now 15 years in education, I appreciate every single one. We are off until Jan 6.
  9:57am bigplanetnoise:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

The Torsion Springs was the name of my first band in high school.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

I apologize for all the clicks and pops in this next old record. I wish there were more.
Avatar 10:05am Listener Gregory:

The name Volta always sounds to me like it refers to a river in Siberia, which is confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

When you listen to them again, is the experience Revolta?
Avatar 10:06am Listener Gregory:

JtotheK: If you're going to actually replace that spring, be super careful. They are under a huge amount of pressure and have a habit of knocking the head off of people who remove or install them. Or so I am told.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Stanley:

When I was in Kenya (warning: tales of a younger man coming up), I read in the newspaper of an incident on Kenyan Airways where a flight had to be diverted because a woman passenger got out a charcoal burner and statrted cooking up dinner!
  10:07am Jeff g. via app:

Tra-la-la-volta everyone!
Avatar 10:09am still b/p:

Interesting connotational divide: Warm feelings for desirable number of clicks in that context. Not so warm for "number of clicks" in internets compyootah marketing-voracious context.
Avatar 🥁 10:10am βrian:

Speaking of twists, that's apparently what Volta means, loosely.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:11am dutchtheo:

I think more buzz is one of the reasons i like the african sound more than the slicker afrocuban.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Gina Bacon:

Tonight's looking good.
Avatar 10:16am Listener Gregory:

Is someone cracking a whip on this cut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Is it true that John Williams stole liberally from Holst's The Planets when composing the Star Wars theme, or is that apocryphal?
Avatar 10:17am Listener Gregory:

@Brian in UK: Nice!
Avatar 🥁 10:17am βrian:

Avatar 10:19am Listener Gregory:

@KimSorise, Extraneous Drivel was the name of my first band in high school, so be gentle.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:22am JtotheK:

@KimSorise - that sounds like an ideal project over the break! I go thru LPs a few times a year and anything that hasn't been listened to in a while ... I ask if it's likely that I'll listen again in the next year or so and if not ... trade to local record shops.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Doug Schulkind:

Good greetings, doctorjazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Stanley:

βrian: there's a chain of Cornish Pasty shops over here that have managed to turn this once highly toothsome and revered pie into the blandest thing imaginable.

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:24am JtotheK:

Now, sorting 45s...I'm not quite as diligent. But I did (finally) go through stuff procured over the past year out of cheapie bins that looked interesting ... but turns out was not interesting. Got rid of a big stack of duds and came back with 5 solid 45s (including Gene Chandler 'There Was A Time') so I'm happy.

@JtotheK - it's always a work in progress. The 45s are a different story, but I have started on those as well.
@bogplanetnoise - doubles, rock noisier gems, old DJ gig items. I DJ'ed for a roller derby team for about 9 seasons so I amassed lots of hard hitting jams about "hard and fast chicks, rolling wheels" etc. I am done with that - it takes up space.

Avatar 11:04am northguineahills:

@Brian: The ones that are married, usually have the whole fam in my experience if they are married, except the skeevy ones (some ex-cops, and old-school Longyland types)
Avatar 11:06am northguineahills:

It's hard to multitask w/ an aural interview, I like printed interviews, so I can listen to music and read...
Avatar 11:06am Listener Gregory:

At first I thought this guitar lick was just repeating over and over. Now I am hearing the secret message it has only for me.
  11:07am Gina B:

Wow, thank you for the kind words, and the warm welcome! Hooray!!!!! ❤️
  11:08am bigplanetnoise:

Thank you so very very very much! Thrilled to become a part of the amazing Drummer family! ❤️

I think a lot of men don't like to acknowledge how much power of effect that their spouses have over or on them; or they might not realize it
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:09am Brian in UK:

Shame bpn is on overnight here, but there are the archives ofcourse, to see which Byrds track is on the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Bob and Gina
Best Xmas present ever! Welcome welcome welcome!
Swag For Life Member 11:10am WR:

Great description of Bob's presenting of his selections on BPN.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you're here, Marie! And HEY-O, thedunkel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am chresti:

Congratulations mauri, I was just reading about a tamale making machine, is that considered a service product design?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Not sleeping is an option. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:12am Brian in UK:

Marie, far be it from me to contend that many men are looking for someone to mother them when thet get hitched.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

Big Planet Noise programs are archived here. Get used to this page, because it will become a second home (if it isn't already): wfmu.org...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:13am Brian in UK:

@doug, I like sleep and I like to think that sleep likes me.
Avatar 11:14am mauri:

the machine itself is product design but the way the process from manufacturer to the customer is service design.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am chresti:

ngh-I guess the ones that are married have no other way to remember what their family looks like if they're in their office all the time.
  11:14am bigplanetnoise:

Thank you again, Sir Doug!!!
Avatar 11:14am mauri:

thanks chresti :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Sem:

Congratulations, mauri. Creative work, I trust.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am chresti:

Ah, thanks mauri:)
  11:17am Gina B:

Thank you, Doug! ❤️
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:17am Brian in UK:

Doug, when changing steams is there a medical or folding money involved?
Avatar 11:18am mauri:

thanks sem. see you at the northwest passage!
Avatar 🥁 11:18am βrian:

Being hopped up on coffee and decongestants, I'm finding this very odd.

  11:19am Andy S.:

Enjoying the show immensely, as always, and shared your Facebook post. Best wishes to you and the family for a happy & healthy holiday season.

Normally you don't want a burning sensation with your stream, but Big Planet Noise is scalding.

Hello there, Andy S! Always a pleasure, Sir!

Disc jockeys around heaven's throne!@??!???
  11:20am rw:

Looking forward to WFMU in heaven. And shaking Hank Williams' hand too!
  11:21am Marie:

Hey Brian, I don't see it as a mothering thing----I think it is more like they have formed such a deep attachment that they are deeply affected by her (and then there is all the day to day stuff of householding and child-rearing)--and they can't control her--I think that is part of why some middle eastern cultures make women subservient.
  11:21am rw:

WFMU DJs all get a free pass, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

If you know me, you know I LOVE songs about records, DJs and jukeboxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Doug Schulkind:

@rw
A discount coupon at the very least.
Avatar 11:22am Listener Gregory:

Hep me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

I think I'm gonna start calling Gina Bacon "Shorty."
  11:24am Gina B:

That works for me! They used to call me Peanut (including the grade school principal).
Avatar 11:24am Listener Gregory:

This sounds like Shorty Bacon stepped into a George Jones session.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I hope he wipes off his boots before coming inside.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:27am Brian in UK:

Marie, was it ever thus. Yes, about cultures, never understood the side door at the mosque for women. That said, Western cultures have the same issues whether innocent or deliberate.
Avatar 11:28am Listener Gregory:

I like my Shorty Bacon crispy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Uncle Michael:

Is Arsenal hiring him, too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Doug Schulkind:

String sections are almost always a good idea. Prove me wrong.
  11:41am johnk77:

they can make rehearsal
more complicated?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Uncle Michael:

Almost always? Yes. Often not? Also yes.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:41am Brian in UK:

Dug, do you mean that they transferred his trasero.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:42am Brian in UK:

Backing vocals get my vote, never fails.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

But often, the worst string section additions are the best.
Avatar 🥁 11:43am βrian:

I prefer a horn section to accompany me on my daily walks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

Billie Holiday with strings? I LOVE it. L-O-V-E it.
Avatar 11:43am northguineahills:

@Brian: It's a big leap for Arteta (he's never been the head manager for any team, let alone an EPL big 5. But the Gunners are desperate....
Avatar 11:44am northguineahills:

(if Leicester City keeps its form another season, it will be the EPL Big 6)
