That's the thing that's always gotten me about contemporary Christian: it all sounds so bland and brainwashed. The 60s/70s Jesus freak stuff isn't the worst of it, but the stuff nowadays, it's like they listened to adult contemporary and decided it was too racy and needed a lobotomy and a chemical castration. Christianity used to produce some epic, era- and culture-defining music, and did so for centuries, usually blazing the trail in new musical developments. Now, CC artists basically imitate whatever's popular after giving it the same lobotomy-castration combo.

@JakeGould: I remember at least some evangelicals when I was a kid railing against John Denver because of Rocky Mountain High and then appearing in Oh God!, with George Burns playing God (imagine that, a Jew playing the father of Jesus!). Especially because the villain was a televangelist (brilliantly played by Paul Sorvino). Of course, these were the same people behind "The Smurfs Are Evil" and "Tolkien teaches kids about witchcraft."

Chick Tracts were a thing - for reals !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm

@Jake: Yeah, there's the belief that the Pope is the successor of St Peter, praying to Mary (a female deity?!? Tut tut!), veneration of saints (or as Pentecostals see it: idolatry/paganism), needing a priest to absolve your sins, transubstantiation, all kinds of other stuff they find objectionable.
@ultradamno: I've seen some really funny parodies of Chick over the years. I have kind of a soft spot for them, they're so over-the-top absurd. Pure spiritual pornography.

@mariano: Thanks for the summary. People endlessly yammer about Judaism and Islam being “weird” but Christian sects and their beliefs are so thinly divisional it makes no sense to me. Anyway, Karen Lafferty seems to be the first person I am hearing tonight that has any talent.
  7:03pm

Anyway, I've had in mind for years the idea of doing ticket-book style tracts like Chick Publications, but for Odinism. And I don't mean ironically. And I would acknowledge Chick as inspiration...and I bet he'd be glad for it if he could see them.

@JakeGould: Anyone who thinks Xtianity doesn't have its weird side needs to have talk with me about some of the things I've seen over the years.
@Kat: a mass is basically a ritual of ceremonial magic and divine cannibalism, in which (if you really believe), bread becomes God's flesh and wine becomes his blood. Metal AF if you ask me, lol!
  7:09pm
Listener Robert:

What the Catholic and Orthodox Christian churches don't acknowledge openly is that they are doing magick. They may not achieve transubstantiation, but by getting people in the mood where they're willing to make it happen, especially when they chant together, they're probably calling down SOME kind of magick -- spelled with a "k" in the Crowleyan sense.

@Gnomon, I would have Odin, Freya, and eventually others walking among us today, talking to this one "seeker" type, giving them an excuse to be explaining things. There'd be no definite effects of magick visible in the tract, except for Odin's ability to do quick changes in apperance.

Like in one he'd be driving a taxi in New York City with a bumper sticker deceptively saying, "Read Holy Qu'uran / broaden your knowledge." Then he'd pick up the seeker and take him on a wild ride. And he'd turn around and look at the guy in back and have one eye, and then again a brief time later and have both eyes, to show his timelessness, and that the myths don't necessarily run in any consistent chronologic order, so "before" and "after" are all mixed.

@Fox, I definitely mean to read it some day.

Anyway, Odin would take the seeker to the observation deck of a skyscraper and show him someone in an office thru a telescope, and say, "You can see him, but can you tell what he's going to do next week? Somebody gave me a device that let me peer into men's minds, but I turn out to have hardly any use for it. I can tell what he PLANS to do next week, but he can always change his mind."
