"They said jazz is dead. But no, jazz isn't dead. The musicians are dead. They are the ones are dead. Jazz will never die. But when musicians get so, they get so passive and everything and they can't play (or) improvise according to what's happening in the universe. Then of course they're dead. And they make the music dead. And they make the music dead 'cause a dead man can't play live music. You know that. He can only be dead." – Sun Ra, April 21, 1971

Happy birthday, Jeff! 78 was a big year for me: I was 9, and my mom and I moved back to New Orleans from Honduras after being there 7 years. Also the year I discovered the Beatles and Monty Python. And an uncle of mine who was really into Zappa and Beefheart and Mahavishnu would let me hang out in his room and listen, learned a lot from him. Hey @Mod Mokka, enjoy the ride!

In 1978 I graduated High School, failed to hike the Appalachian Trail, and took way too many dangerous motorcycle trips.
The Richmond Va station WGOE let me stand in on their softball team (the "GOENADS' - I kid you not) and we won. It was a great
year to be 17 in America.

The one-two punch of Pere Ubu's Modern Dance and Dub Housing was a memorable '78 ear-boxer. Learned about kraut-rock from interviews with David Thomas and John Lydon that year and it took the next four years to find Can, Neu, and Faust LPs
