Hello Boss and couch lovers everywhere.
Just preparing for a belated Xmas with family, trying to hone my pizza making skills today, then much scoffing tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53am Doug Schulkind:

I will be serving shrimp, Brian in UK. By boat, if you get my drift.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:57am Brian in UK:

Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
Would that be drift fishing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58am Doug Schulkind:

I'm not fishing for compliments, if that's what you mean.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:02am Brian in UK:

I will put it in whiting. Oh no, not the fish jokes.
Avatar 9:03am fleep:

Good morning, Doug, Brian, Drummers, fish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Doug Schulkind:

My nickname in high school was Orange Roughy.

Welcome to the grouper, fleep!
  9:05am Listener Robert:

Happy Wrestling Day.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:05am Brian in UK:

Hey fleep, if you got any sunshine your way please send it eastwards. Or westwards for that matter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am Sem:

Hello, Doug, drummer some regulars, and inadvertent listeners.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:07am Brian in UK:

What-ho, Sem. Hope the brioche turned out well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, Listener Wrestler! Welcome advertant Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Sem:

Indeed it did, Brian. Scarcely a crumb remained. Of the scalloped potato made with double cream, it is only a faint memory, and an alarming spike on a cholesterol chart in Emergency.
Avatar 9:11am fleep:

Brian, it's about 8° C and the sun isn't up yet. Why am I awake? Oh, right, a cat stepped on my head. Yo, Sem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Doug Schulkind:

I made four more music beds this week. It was a good week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

Meanwhile, these shimmering guitars should be dissolving the last of the cobwebs from your cerebral cortex.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:13am Brian in UK:

fleep, oh yes the cats nose in your ear at six am. We have the same pleasure in this house.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Sem:

HIya, fleep.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:14am Brian in UK:

Sem we will have something similar but with celariac.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:18am Sam Segal:

Morning, Doug and Doug-Faithful!
  9:19am Jeff g. via app:

The dog claimed my spot on the bed this morning when I got up early to pee. So hello.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

Sam Segal! The man who serenaded me off to sleep last night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff g via app
Did the dog remember to take off your leash?
  9:20am Jeff g. via app:

Geez this drummer. Could be in a Threadgill band.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Doug Schulkind:

"Could be in a Threadgill band" is my new favorite compliment.
  9:26am Listener Robert:

Just to muddify, Urban Dictionary gives Wrestling Day as the day after Boxing Day, and when siblings start wrestling over shared toys; World Wrestling Day is May 23, commemorating the first world championships in Vienna in 1904; and National Pro Wrestling Day, like everything else in pro wrestling, is disputed, with many places claiming a variable weekend date in February, but the Official Wrestling Museum proclaiming March 31, anniversary of Wrestlemania.
Avatar 9:27am fleep:

Thanks for pinning that down, Listener Robert
  9:29am Listener Robert:

I was just making it up when I wished you all a happy Wrestling Day, but then I Googled it.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:31am Brian in UK:

Is Boxing Day named for when one gave the servants/staff the day off to see relatives.
  9:32am johnk77:

very cool set

Avatar 9:33am still b/p:

We dress in spangly trunks to visit the nice neighbors on Wrestling Day and hit them with folding chairs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Sem:

Heh.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

Every time I hear Hank (yes, we were on first name terms) the description of him as 'thin as a rail' resonates.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Sem:

Thinking about Hank reminds me that whilst listening to the automatic Drummer Stream when there is no regularly scheduled program, I have the feeling that it is the elevator music in an infinite Tower of Song.
  9:37am bigplanetnoise:

Coffeejambalaya, please???
  9:38am Listener Robert:

Darn, I missed Williams Lake, BC's Jan. 2 holiday, Wrestling Day, but I promise you this'll be my last mention of wrestling days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Doug Schulkind:

With extra hickory, just the way you like it, bigplanetnoise!
  9:39am Gina B:

Morning, Drummerpeople!

  9:41am Gina B:

Hooray! Hooray!
  9:41am Gina B:

Checking in from Brooklyn this morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

I would swear this Titus Turner version was later than '52, but no. There it is in the 30 August 1952 edition of Billboard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Doug Schulkind:

Oh Gina, I miss Brooklyn so bad (even if the Brooklyn I miss doesn't quite exist anymore). Tell Brooklyn I love it!

Howdy, dutchtheo!!
Avatar 9:43am still b/p:

Would be innerestin' to know what Hank's happy favorite covers of it woulda been across the decades if he'd still been around.
Swag For Life Member 9:44am WR:

Ah, this set reminds me to check to see if the new Dr John album has been released yet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

Muscle Shoals horns in full effect.
  9:47am bigplanetnoise:

Gina - ham & egg on a real hard roll, please. Missing the smaller things.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

A bacon, egg & cheese on a hard roll from Frank's (on Smith Street) was part of my regular Friday drive in to WFMU every Friday morning. There's nothing remotely like it in Pittsburgh.
  9:51am Mr C:

North Jersey has the market cornered on egg sandwiches.
Montclair and Nutley!
Swag For Life Member 9:54am WR:

Bagel BLT with fried egg was my week day starter until I foolishly took that blood test and cholesterol was identified as my nemesis.
  9:54am bigplanetnoise:

Unfortunately, Music City is unfamiliar with any such hard roll offerings...
  9:55am Gina B:

I am off to find the closest bodega!
  9:55am Gina B:

(soon)
Swag For Life Member 9:55am WR:

Toasted everything bagel, I reminisce as I finish my oatmeal.
  9:56am Gina B:

Thanks, Doug...and thanks Jeff Moore!!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:56am Brian in UK:

Hey WR join the Statin club. It is often inate, so not always just dietary.
  9:57am Gina B:

I could use a nice NJ pepper and egg.
  10:02am bigplanetnoise:

Pepe e uovo su un rotolo duro!
  10:03am Gina B:

That’s the stuff!
  10:04am Gina B:

I’m trying to eat all of the things while I’m here. Dumplings, bagels, pizza, baconeggonnaroll....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Johnny Hodges on alto. One of the greatest sounds in all creation.
  10:05am Jeff g. via app:

No one is that smooth anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Splain it, splain it, splain it to me!
Swag For Life Member 10:09am WR:

Brian in UK, I do have a statin prescription and some doctors have told me that diet changes are not effective but I'm being extra cautious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Oxidized:

Doug, is there a rundown of the GTDR show/schedule changes on the WFMU site anywhere?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome, WR! Please have seconds and thirds and fourths.
  10:11am Gina B:

Oh, man!
  10:12am Mr C:

Top of the mark Jimmy right here..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Oxidized
There is no explanation of the changes in print, yet. The Drummer schedule will reflect them next week here: wfmu.org...

The changes are:
BIG PLANET NOISE joins the Drummer Stream on Monday evenings, 9-11pm (ET)

Sam Segal's If You Lose Your Horse moves from Monday evenings to Wednesdays, 10-midnight (ET)

Larry Grogan's Testify! moves from Wednesday evenings to Thursday afternoons, 3-5pm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Doug Schulkind:

Good morning, Mr C!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Doug Schulkind:

I played an hour of Jimmy Scott a few weeks back and I didn't spin this track. WhatamIfuckingnuts?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Oxidized:

Got it, thanks.
  10:15am bigplanetnoise:

So very excited to become a part of Drummer!
  10:16am Mr C:

BTW, I can tell you, egg sandwich culture does not exist in LA!
Swag For Life Member 10:16am WR:

In a nut shell, oxidized, Big Planet Noise will now be on GTD Monday 9PM. Sam and his horse move to GTD Wednesday 10 PM and Larry Testify moves to GTD Thursday 3 PM.
  10:17am Gina B:

I’m so happy about all of this, too!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Doug Schulkind:

I can't imagine the feeling inside Leon Thomas must have been bursting with in the studio singing this with Mr. Armstrong. A magnificent thing.
Swag For Life Member 10:18am WR:

Satchmo did two versions? I have the one on Flying dutchman and this sounds different so not rerelease.
  10:19am Mr C:

Obviously a master plan.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

@WR
I believe this is the one and only version. From Armstrong's finally recording session in 1970.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Doug Schulkind:

Our man Larry Grogan has written about the Louis Armstrong/Leon Thomas collaboration, here: funky16corners.wordpress.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Doug Schulkind:

Buddy Cooner on guitar behind Brother Cole.
Swag For Life Member 10:28am WR:

Ok, I've stopped commenting on BPN when music sounds different than I remember, guess need to apply that to other genres.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Doug Schulkind:

@WR
Never stop commenting!
Swag For Life Member 10:32am WR:

Don't worry I have plenty other drivel to natter about besides "this doesn't sound like I remember "...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Doug Schulkind:

The Natty Drivels, live from Jamaica!
Swag For Life Member 10:42am WR:

Heavy dub from I Wrong and U Right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Who's the fool who potted down James' mic on that number?!
Avatar 🥁 10:55am bobdc:

Why, it's Oberlin professor Gary Bartz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Wait, whut? Gary Bartz is at Oberlin?! Did I know that and forget it?
Avatar 🥁 10:57am bobdc:

www.oberlin.edu... A friend of mine (trumpeter of the Heptatonic Jazz Quintet) has a son now studying there with Bartz. This kid has improved a ton since going off to college there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

The late lamented Wendell Logan was head of the Jazz Deptartment when I was at Oberlin. He brought in the old school sax master Candy Johnson to run the jazz ensemble when I was in it. Later, I studied under the wonderful Hugh Ragin. Gary Bartz is a beautiful continuation of the tradition there.
  11:01am Jeff g. via app:

Oberlin gets all the good ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

The University of Pittsburgh just hired Nicole Mitchell, who is doing tremendous things. (She brought Roscoe Mitchell and Amina Claudine Myers here this fall.) Mitchell replaced Geri Allen who replaced the jazz department founder Nathan Davis, but died after only a few years here.
  11:04am Jeff g. via app:

Here’s a set of music I would never play for myself but that I love when it is played for me.
  11:06am Mr C:

Outside the box Gamble and Huff!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:07am Brian in UK:

This is proving to be quite a fundamental show.
Swag For Life Member 11:09am WR:

I had forgotten about Joe Lee Wilson. Like many I learned of him from the Shepp recordings. I have maybe one of his own albums but really like his voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Doug Schulkind:

@Mr C
This performance by Billy Paul is a vocal version of a legendary jazz instrumental by a largely unknown Philadelphia D.B. Shrier. I will be playing the instrumental original on my fill-in show this coming Sunday afternoon as I am subbing for the Stork Club.
  11:10am Mr C:

Really?!?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Can I get a little love for my playlist art today? Mr California Raisin is entertaining his ass off for you!

Fun fact: The man behind the lead voice of the fictional singing group The California Raisins was founding member of the Electric Flag, George Allen "Buddy" Miles Jr!

Victor Ntoni on bass here with Dollar Brand.

G'morning, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Doug Schulkind:

"Shrimp Boats" is a classic pop tune written by American composers Paul Mason Howard and Paul Weston. Interestingly. Originally sung by Weston's wife Jo Stafford.
Swag For Life Member 11:46am WR:

Good choices Captain Doug. Nice haul.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Everybody goes home with shrimp today!
  11:49am ?:

What's an Isipingo, anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

I believe an isipingo is a kind of berry.
  11:51am Mark R:

I can see why Harry named his group that, then. I would've gone with Harry's Berries, but that's probably too commercial (not to mention terrible!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:52am Brian in UK:

Thanks Boss. Happy and Peaceful New Year everyone.

It is also a part of the South African city Durban.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Sem:

Echoing BiUK ^. See ya round!
Swag For Life Member 11:52am WR:

Wikipedia tells me Isipingo is a town in South Africa with a complicated history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

It had been a "whites only" neighborhood that the apartheid government reclassified as an Indian settlement. It used this publicly to justify the relocation of millions of blacks to the horrid township ghettos.
Swag For Life Member 11:55am WR:

I'm sure I'll be bumping into all ya'll in the playlist chat in the coming days so will save the New Year cheer for later. Cheers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Uncle Michael:

Thanks for the music this morning, Doug. See you all in the next room.
