The story of the song's popularity, iirc, is that it was a fluke: the Guy Lombardo Orchestra happened to be playing it as a filler piece during a live NYE radio broadcast as the countdown happened.

@Daisy - ah, I see! Stupid old ears of mine. A friend once tasked me with delivering an envelope with his demo tape and publicity pack to 4AD headquarters in 1991 before a trip to England. Took a long time to find it (London was hard to navigate for tourists before Google Maps), was basically a house in some suburb, and they were closed. But I dropped the envelope through the mail slot. A month or two later my friend said he got a polite rejection letter from Ivo himself. He said he didn't mind the rejection since he was so stoked to have a handwritten note from the man himself.
