Favoriting January 2, 2020: "Cool and Strange Music Magazine Issue #1 as a Setlist" (Vol. 1)
In celebration of the first 10 issues of Cool and Strange Music Magazine now available in PDF form from https://oglio.com/. Today, I’ll be using Issue #1 (from Spring 1996) as a set list. Page by page and picture by picture, I'll be playing music by each artist mentioned or printed in chronological order (If I HAVE them. A couple were unattainable to find in time.) This theme will probably be revisited over the course of other shows, as it will not all fit into one hour. Most of these LPs were found at thrift stores over the past three decades, but some came from the actual record collection of magazine creator and friend Dana Countryman. To start I'll be playing the actual copy of Anna Russell's "Into Darkest Africa" that was scanned for the cover art :) (The playlist photo of this, comes from discogs however.)

Thanks for playing Esquivel! cheering up music in the morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm
Rich in Washington:

I finally bought her trombone record. It's every bit as weird as her puppet records, imo. Trombone is such a weird solo instrument. I just wish I had enough trombone material if only so I could do a show entitled 'tromboners!'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm
Mr Otis F Odder:

Excellent Bob Thompson cut and ranks as one of my favs by Bob.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:15pm

Wow. I've never seen that record. What a delightful cover as well!

You have the Voodoo Trombone Quartet I'm assuming?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm
Rich in Washington:

A friend and I were once musing how there are so many 1920s records that had this obligatory trombone glissando in them. Once you notice it, you start hearing it all the time. It was the bass drop of the early 20th century.
Avatar 12:20pm
ARB:

There's something about the slide, the lapsteel/slide guitar and the trumpet both make me feel kind of melty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm

Let's bring it back. Trombone's giving more bottom to bluetooth speakers in the 2020s!

yeah, I'm not familiar with either Fascinato's or Elliot's work outside of their more famous LPs. This is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
Mr Otis F Odder:

I see that BC. That Fascinato and Dean Elliot you don't hear often (both on my want list) opposed to Elliot's Zounds (which I still have the copy YOU gave me when you visited, Reno maybe... or could've been Seattle or Montreal)! Time flies huh!

Dana Countryman:

Wow-- talk about a blast from the past! I truly did not know what I was doing, when I put the first issue of the magazine together. It was done on my first computer with minimal design software. This first issue was xeroxed, as I couldn't yet afford offset printing. It was hand-collated and hand-stapled together by myself, my best friend Keith and my dad. It was truly a " 'zine" to start with, then became an actual magazine once we had national distribution, advertisers and subscribers.
Anyway, this is a cool concept show, so thanks BC Sterret!
