Weird malady thing: I have what used to be mild misophonia related to a particular sound. We have a dog that is ill and is making that sound with a regular frequency, which is making the misophonia pretty intense. There is a particular sound in one part of Calling Jesus that approximates that sound that literally makes me crazy.

It's pretty amusing to hear people talk about anything "shutting down" with a little over a cm ("half inch") of snow. What specifically changes in life when that happens? Walking, bicycling and driving all happen on unlceared roads with 1cm of snow.

Unless you have snow plows, sand trucks etc. I think it’s reasonable to freak out over small amounts of snow, if that means just staying home. Everyone driving on the snow packs it into ice, that happened here in Portland ME one year when the plows didn’t get out in time for evening traffic. Chaos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09pm

I lived in Nebraska for five years, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's how to drive on snow and ice. After six minor fender-benders my first winter there, that is.

If you don’t get regular snow a half inch is a good excuse for a snow day, everyone needs one.
  5:12pm
Netochka Nezvanova:

A snow plow and sand trucks for a cm of snow? Come on, man! That's a bit bourgeois. Just walk, bike or drive over the ice.
Haha you guys are making me think Americans need to learn to drive better!! I've never heard of any of this.....and no Nepalese or Bulgarian is going to get in a car accident bc of small amounts of packed ice on a road. I guess wealth makes even 1 cm of snow scary, though....this is an interesting conversation. And it has a great soundtrack.
What happens there when the sun comes out? :P
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
coelacanth∅:

what melinda says makes sense; and i love an excuse to stay inside all day... still i can drive a 28-year-old rear-wheel-drive car through a few inches of snow &/or ice and not crash or get stuck.
  5:14pm
Netochka Nezvanova:

Actually I take it all back: I'm staying in anytime it's below 5 degrees and just listening to Earthlogoff all day!

Americans tend to be in a hurry, staying home is a more fun (perhaps bourgeois) way of taking a break from that than creeping along on an icy road where someone else might be driving stupidly and crash into you.

@Nenotchka: It's of course a pretty big country with a variety of different climate zones. Americans from the North and Midwest are as comfortable driving on snow and ice as anyone else from snowy climates. Besides, there are lots of places in the world where an unexpected fraction of an inch of snow would bring things to a complete standstill. I spent part of my childhood in Honduras, where temperatures in December would qualify as a heatwave in more temperate climes, and every so often when it goes down to about 60, you'll see people wearing ear muffs and bubble jackets. I can't imagine the pandemonium if there were a freak snowstorm in the city where I grew up.

@Carmichael: As a former Chicagoan, no snow is a big selling point. I was in charge of driving a van load of family members past Mt. Hood over the holidays. There were a few moments there that reminded me just how lucky I am.
  5:27pm
Netochka Nezvanova:

When I worked in Malaysia and Laos, local people would wear HUGE NorthFace jackets in "winter" when the temp "plummeted" to.....15! At night!

Yes, it reminds us of the power nature has on our psyche and our emotions to see how differently humans from various geographies are affected by weather. It's incredible, really. But I'm still gonna try and scare an American from POrtalnd or Atlanta with a piece of ice now when I next meet one :P
