Hi Sem. I've been boning up on tipping etiquette in NYC, ahead of my upcoming first visit. Seems a minefield. I suppose those dollar notes are good for that though.

They round everything physical to .05CAD in Canada.
"On March 29, 2012, the Canadian government announced that the 1¢ coin would be retired.[1] The Royal Canadian Mint stopped producing 1¢ coins in May 2012, and in February 2013 the Bank of Canada stopped distributing them, but the coins remain legal tender. Cash transactions are rounded to the nearest 5¢, while non-cash transactions (using cheques, credit cards, or debit cards) will continue to be rounded to the nearest 1¢."

What about paper checks? A lot of places no longer accept them in the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm

I haven't seen a paper check here since the 1990s.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:37pm

There was a recent kerfluffle about no-cash stores that were forced to accept cash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm

i go to a cash-only bar, but there's an atm in the corner. $1. for beer, a shot or a barely over regulation neat; $2. for a decent mix drink or 3 if it's a double that's really more than a triple. Minimum purchase requirements are allowed in the US, from what I know. And I think it was finally made legal to permit surcharges for credit transactions, but I'm not positive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
coelacanth∅:

last i knew there was either a law against requiring a minimum purchase; or the credit card companies were allowed to make the call, which always was no minimum obviously -since it's in their best interest. (even though it fucks over the small businesses)
maybe that's changed, not keeping track. i know businesses that have a minimum and i respect that; but i've been in there when a customer gave them a hard time about it.

I think separating church and state means that people don’t associate church with state and therefore don’t become disillusioned and drift away, as they have in some European countries. At least that’s one theory I’ve heard. Also the country was founded on a tradition of breaking off and starting your own thing, so it makes sense that there would be all these splinterings.

I'm really amazed not only by the vocab she picks up, but the seemingly thoughtful intonation and timing of her delivery.

(She likes to give advice, BTW.)

40 years ago i was sadly disappointed when i heard the newest album from one of my favorite bands, the clash... but suddenly those in our circle and extended circle where more open to "punk rock", so i guess it served an important function.
...there are some good songs on it. the arrangements aren't very inspired, like what came before.

The Clash is what got me ready for my second daily shifty of waiting tables. Fourteen-hour days didn't seem so bad with their help.

"punk" was good for that! i remember going to apply for a job and feeling my usual "why would they hire me?" but listening to the sexpistols (who i didn't even like all that much) and going there like they'd be fools to not hire me.
they hired me!
