I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Les Rallizes Dénudés! I still wonder whether that nonsense name might be an anagram
Avatar 12:19pm
Mayuko:

@fred I guess the rhythm? Both Yura yura teikoku and the mops tracks were in Japanese traditional dance music rhythm.

That looks like one hell of a road in the playlist pic!

I don't know why exactly, just got my shoulders itching to move. Traditional is probably more physical and translates well

melinda:

hi Mayuko and all! I like your playlist colors.
Avatar 12:26pm
Mayuko:

> Les Rallizes Dénudés My guess is it's just weird/wrong translation. Kinda like that fashion brand Superdry極度乾燥しなさい that I see all the time here in NYC, which always make me think wtf (though in their case it must be intentional...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm
fred:

What does the Japanese wording for Superdry means?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm
fred:

I read that a member of Les Rallizes Dénudés lived/studied in France for a while. Made me wonder whether it might be an anagram with lézard (French for lizard) in it, or whether he met really rich people here, who tended to call parties "rallies" (I attended an upscale college for a few years, due to a court ruling I hadn't heard about)
Avatar 12:38pm
Mayuko:

@fred I guess 極度乾燥 is not wrong for Superdry, but it really sounds weird to me especially combined with しなさい. There's a little more natural way of saying something being dry I think!
Avatar 12:38pm

@Rickwaukee Probably what I should have done!

Hi, Mayuko and vertigo group. 9 Eyes has a lot of neat stuff, including some macaques keeping warm in a hot spring. www.9-eyes.com
Avatar 12:46pm
Mayuko:

@fred I think I read somewhere they were being "Ralli-ru" which is a Japanese slang for being high on drugs when they came up with the name. So it might just be their attempt of a JP/French pun. haha!
Avatar 12:47pm
Mayuko:

@Ken Yeah! That website is pretty great.

hi! this fishmans song is great!
  12:49pm

Fishmans is reminding me of a 70s hit that featured the vocals of a woman seemingly in the throes of passionate lovemaking but I can't remember the title
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm
fred:

@Mayuko: It's a great story, whether true or not. Confusing as many people as possible seems close to what they were doing

@Rickwaukee I'm curious! Though Fishmans songs/lyrics usually sound really stoned, doesn't seem too capable of lovemaking.

JosephB:

Superdry 極度乾燥しなさい is like the reverse of the gibberish English you often see on clothing items in Japan -- gibberish Japanese for an English brand. Throwing random Japanese on stuff seems a growing trend right now (although that Superdry brand has been around for a while).
  1:03pm
Ike:

So it effectively comes across as something like “Its Mega Driest!” maybe?
  1:04pm

@Ike I would translate it as "dry it totally" -- it's an imperative command, which is weird

  1:24pm
Ike:

“Nazis Sell Eel Udders” is fabulous.
Avatar 1:25pm
Mayuko:

@Joe B You're right. It does make me wonder why they'd do that. I saw a bunch of gibberish Japanese in Hong Kong, and still do in Chinatown. I guess they have some trust in Japanese products. But not sure when it's an English brand, if it's irony or a genuine interest in Japanese culture or what.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:29pm
fred:

When in doubt, just assume they don't care and are just out to make as much money as they can
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm
Sem:

Liking this a bunch.
Good afternoon, Mayuko, fred, the ike, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
fred:

@Sem: I subscribed to conjunctions, I don't like it wholeheartedly, but it does challenge me, which is good
Avatar 1:36pm
Mayuko:

@fred it is hard to assume people's motivation. Sometimes I see Japanese/Chinese character tattoos that are kind of like 極度乾燥しなさい, which is funny and also makes me feel a little sorry. However the best tattoo I've ever seen says 首(neck) on his neck, so I do hope people keep getting Japanese tattoos.
Avatar 1:36pm
Mayuko:

Hi Sem! Happy to have you here!!
Avatar 1:39pm
JosephB:

Back when I taught ESL students here in LA, every time a student came in wearing some shirt with an English phrase I would test them and see if they knew what it meant. Many times they had no idea. I didn't mean to be tough on them, I just thought they should know. Once a guy came in wearing a shirt that said "Don't push me 'cuz I'm close to the edge," and he had never heard of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Definitely a teachable moment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Sem:

@fred: no lack of variety there, and no doubt every style. Short wikipedia piece describes an uber-ambitious mission statement for Conjunctions, hope you find plenty to ponder.

I can't get used to seeing the date "2020"
  1:46pm
spodiodi:

i hear you, rbrt. cool story, JosephB
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm
coelacanth∅-:

Joseph some people need someone to be tough on them. -what the hell are they doing wearing a phrase they don't understand!
like all these kids i see wearing velvet underground or ramones tshirts...the ones that carry skateboards but never get on them. we all know they don't listen to those bands.
Avatar 1:48pm
Mayuko:

@Joe B They definitely should know and I think you were indeed being helpful! Some English writings on Japanese clothing are truly ridiculous. But how does one get a Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five shirt without knowing? I guess it wasn't exactly a band t-shirt type of thing, just a quote?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
fred:

@Sem: plenty to ponder there, including what I should dismiss. Not that I'm in a position to do so, but it's a very literate publication, and my not wealthy background sometimes rears its head
Avatar 1:50pm
Mayuko:

@rbrt Me neither! by the time we get used to it 2020 will be halfway over!!! :'(
  1:50pm
rbrt:

:'(
Avatar 1:52pm
JosephB:

@Coel @Mayuko It was just a t-shirt with a graphic with that phrase written over it. Not obviously a band shirt. We ended up watching the video to that song and discussing the lyrics -- much more fun than the textbooks we were given! I never saw him wear the shirt again, though.
  1:54pm
rbrt:

they're just kids being kids? best time in life to do silly shit
Avatar 1:55pm
Mayuko:

@Joe B That's very cool! And kinda funny he stopped wearing it.
I don't think I knew you used to be an ESL teacher - as a former student I'm forever grateful to all the ESL teachers, you guys are real unsung heroes!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm

I think my parallel chat with Sem was enriched by this talk about Melle Mel T-shirts. I feel I was talking about the same thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Sem:

You're a thoughtful reader, fred, it's your perogative to accept or dismiss material for whatever reason, very literate or otherwise. In the end it is art, and art engages you or it doesn't. It's not meant to be an obstacle course.

Ah, reading Bashou. Have you previously read much of him in Japanese, beyond little bits you probably got in school? I read a bit over 30 years ago. Very little bit.
