Ahhh...not too bad. My aunt leaves on Tuesday, so it will be just me and my old man. I just left there. I kind of had it our with him. He tends to think his opinion is fact and if you state a differing opinion you are putting him down. Pretty horrible way to live. I usually keep my trap shut, but I have my limits! Anyhow...nothing I can't deal with. It's just a shame, He's so judgmental and angry all the time. He has been this way for a while, way before the stroke. The stroke definitely hasn't helped. Life goes on. But, I digress from my digression, I'm here to sooth the savage beast with good vibes!
  6:45pm ignatatus666:

Hi Paul
Long time caller
First time listener
In reference to the Emo reference
The Dischord bands at the time of Egghead embrace ignition etc. were coined Emo by the old time Straight Edgers. They wanted to make sure no one mistook these records for Hardcore or straight edge. Many of the early Straight Edge bands evolved into that Emo genre. Then somehow the Emo genre became a completely different scene so the Dischord type bands dropped the Emo label. ( the reference)
Avatar 6:46pm northguineahills:

hence, why many people differentiated said bands as either emocore or screamocore….
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Mr. Pumpy:

I thought elmocore was all about sesame street and puppets and shit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Mr. Pumpy:

Spirit! Nice...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Mr. Pumpy:

Nice segue into the cap'n, Paul Bruno!
Avatar 6:53pm Franco Twinkie:

Someone on WFMU, I can't remember who, pledged to play Captain Beefheart on every show.
  6:53pm choggie:

whenever I turn somebody new on to Captain beefheart, I always turn them on to Clear Spot first.
  6:53pm JakeGould:

When I first heard the word “emo” being used to describe a genre is was literally just a Dischord records thing with the “Rites of Spring.” Then I heard it used to describe “The Promise Ring.” And then — somehow ” “My Chemical Romance” is emo? I barely get that.
  6:54pm choggie:

Best produced BH album
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Devon E. Levins plays the Enno on Tuesday evenings.
  6:55pm ignatatus666:

Emocore and screamcore came much later
Kids referred to the Smashing Pumpkins as Emo
I booked screamo and emocore bands like 10 years after. What I’ll never accept is kids that label their music as post punk or post hardcore. Either you is or you ain’t!!
Avatar 6:58pm Franco Twinkie:

Choggie, You are right, but The Spotlight Kid, which is probably the worst produced Beefheart album is my favorite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:58pm mariano:

Sorry to hear about the tension with your dad, Mr Pumpy. I have plenty of relatives like that, it can be a chore.
  7:00pm JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: And Scott Williams is definitely into Eno.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:00pm coelacanth∅:

hey Mr.P
...@6.48 haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Mr. Pumpy:

Yeah, mariano...thanks. It sucks hard. Especially when you love the person and they are painful to be around. I don't talk much...or about much, because it is like walking on eggshells. Bummer. I feel bad for all those who have to deal with that. I'm good though...take it in stride. I feel worse for him than me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm coelacanth∅:

Franco if said person pledged to Bill Mac's show they got their wish...only he's not on the schedule
  7:03pm JakeGould:

@MrPumpy: Don’t sweat it too much. For perspective, my dad always had financial stress but never took it out on others in the family. Then after he had heart surgery, I was a kid and he sent me out to buy a bottle of vitamin C. I didn’t know there were different types, so I bought a pricier bottle with rosehips in it and he flipped out.

Hospitalization can really just bring frustration to the fore. Weather it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...EnoCore would be nice! I think so many bands are EnoCore being Eno has made is mark in so many ways when it comes to music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm chresti:

My dad got very agreeable and friendly towards me once dementia set in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:04pm coelacanth∅:

Mr.P it sounds like your's is a version of my father.
- a curmudgeon already that got worse after a stroke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...thanks, bruv! You are right, and I try to be as understanding as possible. Just the same, I do appreciate hearing perspectives of others. Thanks for sharing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Mr. Pumpy:

@chresti...good for you! @coelacanth...nail on the head!
  7:07pm ignatatus666:

Your Dad sounds like my son. No matter what’s on the table he can’t be wrong because he’s a scientist. I just change the subject and hope he learns
  7:07pm choggie:

FT, I'm gonna revisit spotlight kid...
Avatar 7:08pm Franco Twinkie:

I was having a hell of a time with my mom. One thing led to another and now she is in an assisted living situation. Now we get along great!
  7:10pm PJ:

Re Emo: i lived in or near DC for 20 years, went to hundreds of shows there, and never once heard the term “emo” used by anyone until mid-to-late ‘90’s, when it seemed to be a thing with some zine writers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm coelacanth∅:

iggy @6.55 i agree about those labels, "post" this or that.
why do people buy into that crap?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm mariano:

Ignatatus666: I hate that, when someone thinks that their academic or professional qualifications in a specific field make their word more valid or even authoritative on any subject whatsoever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm chresti:

My dad often thinks I'm either my mom or his girlfriend from the bar he used to go to
  7:13pm JakeGould:

@PJ: The Dischord connection is very real, “Emo, which began as a post-hardcore subgenre, was part of the 1980s hardcore punk scene in Washington, D.C. as something different from the violent part of the Washington, D.C. hardcore scene. Minor Threat fan Guy Picciotto formed Rites of Spring in 1984, using the musical style of hardcore punk and combining the musical style with melodic guitars, varied rhythms, and personal, emotional lyrics. Many of the band's themes, including nostalgia, romantic bitterness and poetic desperation, became familiar tropes of later emo music.”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Mr. Pumpy:

@chresti...if he owes one or both of them money...good for you! I hope you don't mind my jest, all I can do is laugh after a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm listener 126464:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Mr. Pumpy:

@ignatatus...bummer. It's brutal. All it takes is admitting there are more sides to something. One can be passionate and say they believe something to be correct without eschewing all possibilities of another angle!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Mr. Pumpy:

Franco...I'm happy for you. Unfortunately my father will never go that route...which I get, but it's so stressful.
  7:18pm JakeGould:

Sad reality if aging is getting older means you can’t just use your brain to hide who you really are anymore. Sounds cold to say but lying takes effort, the truth just flows through most people… Unless you are a sociopath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm coelacanth∅:

i used to go out with a research biologist at sloan-ketering (sp?) very brilliant in her field, apparently, but refused to let me help her when she couldn't figure out how to use my camera. turned into a big fight. i shouldn't have suggested that i show her.
...and not smart enough to know that she didn't understand people well at all. (herself included)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:19pm coelacanth∅:

this sounds a lot like a kinks song. (the verses)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...this is why I feel bad for the old man. I don't know when he decided he knew everything and everyone else is wrong. It happened within the last 10-15 years. He certainly wasn't always like that and didn't raise me to be that way. I think there may be a correlation between that behavior and him watching so much cable news...no joke!
  7:21pm Andal:

Really enjoying this set so far. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm chresti:

I like your bed music PB.
Avatar 7:22pm Franco Twinkie:

I wonder what kind of horrible old shit I'm destined to be? I have lots of potential!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm Mr. Pumpy:

@coelacanth∅...I don't get that. I'm not an idiot ( I don't think!) and I'm really into photography, but I'd still welcome any pointers, especially from the owner of the camera. I guess a lot of it comes down to insecurities. I've had those kinds of fights before with significant others. It blows
  7:23pm PJ:

@JakeGould: I was not part of the “scene”, but I did go to tons of shows in that time period, and I honestly don’t recall anyone using the term “emo”. Could be that I was not paying attention, or that I was not in the right circles (more likely), but it just sounded funny when I first heard it in the ‘90’s - isn’t all music emotional?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Franco...ha! I know, probably a bunch of old codgers looking in at us like a TV show right now thinking, "Don't get ahead of yourselves you miserable-old-fucks in training!" I hope not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm chresti:

Could be, Mr Pumpy. Was/is he a drinker?
  7:25pm Tasha:

Are you sure you are not an AI creation?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Mr. Pumpy:

@chresti...funny you should ask. Big time drinker until just about 10-12 years ago when he was forced to quite. Definite possible correlation there too. Probably the double whammy between that and cable news. Sheesh...the fella never had a chance, come to think of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm chresti:

My dad was until about 5 years ago
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm coelacanth∅:

Mr.P yeah, it was sad. we were very into each-other then these little things started to turn onto full-on crazy.
she also had a double standard about terminology, so i had to consider my words very carefully. no peace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Seems like we need a channel that looks just like regular cable news but the content puts the elderly listener at ease and into a malleable mood. What could possibly go wrong with that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm listener 126464:

  7:31pm ignatatus666:

Lots of back and forth here I haven't been able to read! Everybody playing nice? Enjoying the show?
Avatar 7:34pm Franco Twinkie:

Well Paul, I'll save you the trouble. In 1968, I Got A Line On You was huge in Los Angeles. And in 1972 Clear Spot got lots of AM radio play on KRLA. I remember happily doodling away in art class and hearing To Much Time on heavy rotation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm chresti:

Good idea Ken.
Avatar 7:34pm northguineahills:

Yeah, my parents have been watching faux news since its inception, they've never been the same since...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm coelacanth∅:

jeez -the alcohol connection too.
my father used to drink over a pint of hard liquor in a night, several night/week for decades. he was funny and was known as a life of the parties. then when my older brother's alcohol problem became unavoidable he quit. i'd say cold turkey but i don't think he had withdrawal symptoms. (as i wouldn't either)
he'd already quit smoking a few years before that.
he gradually became a grump after all that.
  7:36pm ignatatus666:

I let it pass. Very rare I’ll bark back because he did not have a great upbringing. So I just let 99% go. I’ve had to prove him wrong several occasions especially when he knows he will get better directions from me then from Waze or better recipes and sources then YouTube. 2 for me 1000 for him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm coelacanth∅:

haven't heard this Gwen McCrae song maybe since it was a radio hit!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm chresti:

Music,... old wc Fields movies, puts my dad in a good mood.
  7:48pm JakeGould:

The thing about cable news and even AM radio is many people who — honestly — are inherently conservative just listen and watch that stuff all day. On the “left” nobody really just sits and listens to the liberal/left media with the same immersive passion. Like when “Air America” (the radio network) was created, I appreciated it but there was no way I would ever listen to that endlessly.
  7:48pm Mod Mokka Matti:

Nobody beats The Biz...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm coelacanth∅:

iggy @7.31 -right...
the way it seems to me, the term "post-punk" suggests that punk was a fashion, and that fashion has ended. total bullshit. it wasn't always called that but it's existed for at least 60 years and still does.
wire (for example) was not "post punk" it was either punk or it wasn't.
- at the time it was called punk.
Avatar 7:49pm northguineahills:

@Jake: Yep, my Mom has it on 24/7, and even my father has AM radio on his car all the time.
  7:51pm JakeGould:

I sometimes listen to NPR stations just to laugh at some of the callers. But it’s like a handful of days at most a week and maybe for 2 hours and its done. Endless conspiracy and hate-mongering as audio wallpaper is terrifying to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm coelacanth∅:

my sister listens to "leftist" radio fairly obsessively.
not as blatantly fabricated but just as bad as fox "news" if you ask me -as far as creating a closed-minded, one-sided perspective.
  7:54pm JakeGould:

@coelacanth∅: Oh yeah, but the ratio of left-leaning people listening to that stuff is far less than on the right side of things.

Thank you, DJ Paul - It's been a great mix to listen to whilst getting some gardening done today!

Jake, one thing I find particularly distasteful about NPR is their week end programming targeted at my age group. As if all the dockers wearing shmoes need to catch up on the world of everything they ignored during the work week. Total middle brow crap.
