Bienvenue! As I gear up for my Paris excursion this weekend I thought I'd get in the mood and rock some fave 60s French jams. Lots of ye-ye action!

Ye Ye Girls is one of the genres I listen most frequently to but hardly ever play in my sets, mainly because my French pronunciations suck so bad!
Avatar 1:22pm
Otis Fodder:

I am thankful that we have so many wonderful French comps available from Girls in the Garage to Swinging Madamoiselle to Ultra Chicks +++
Avatar 1:22pm

haha totally! I'm not even gonna try and name the tracks---just the artists!

was it from a shop called Exotica or something? I think I visited it once.
  1:26pm
Martinibomb:

@Rich I keep meaning to work on my french my wife is pretty great at it and does lots of french songs at karaoke.
Avatar 1:27pm
Otis Fodder:

There was a shop Disquivel (before my time) run by others ... but the shop in question is Le Pick-Up and the owner Denis (who is regularly at the WFMU rec fair almost every year annually) put those together, with artwork/direction by Monsieur Vic.

Michel Polnareff.... new to me. It would not be Sounds Spectacular without a few obscure gems?

Heheh Ungawa indeed
Avatar 1:29pm
Otis Fodder:

My French is getting much better but that's it. Any other language on the show I try to get it right but should just go by what Google Translate voices, so funny and wrong often. Ha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm

The french I learned messes with my spanish.

I type "how to pronounce" into youtube all the time haha

Ursula1000:

I always think of that Steve Martin sketch from his Wild And Crazy Guy comedy album when he's trying to learn French...hilarious
  1:31pm
Martinibomb:

that's the one thing about radio I feel like I suck at the most
Avatar 1:33pm
Otis Fodder:

I love that Steve Martin album. Haven't heard it in years. Need to listen again.. and watch THE JERK again, it's been like a decade too long. He hates these cans!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm
Rich in Washington:

I fondly remember Steve Martin's comedy specials, which usually coincided with the release of his records. What a time, when a comedy record charted.
  1:35pm
Martinibomb:

steve martin rules! I always loved that he wrote for the smothers brothers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Rich in Washington:

he's great. I love how he just dropped out of acting and comedy and does banjo workshops and events.

Gern Blanston!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm
Franco Twinkie:

Les Cactus reminds me of some truly demented ice cream creations I saw in Italy. One was this banana wearing a slice of pineapple as a sombrero called Les Mexicaine.
Avatar 1:37pm
Otis Fodder:

Steve Martin and Richard Pryor (craps all-time fav) standup albums are tops here.
Avatar 1:37pm
Otis Fodder:

This is 'THE' Parisiennes track to have. So fuzzy good and groovy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
Rich in Washington:

I think The Jerk was the first R rated movie I ever saw in a theater. My mom took me. That was awkward.
Avatar 1:38pm
Ursula1000:

haha what an experience!
Avatar 1:39pm
Mr Fab:

You think that was awkward - mom took me and my brother to see "Life of Brian." How' s THAT for a first R-rated movie?!
Avatar 1:39pm
Otis Fodder:

No way... Rich! My step-mom took me to a double feature of Animal House and The Jerk at like age 10. My folks were pretty cool that way. I didn't understand much I'm sure.
  1:40pm
Martinibomb:

I got my mom to go see John Waters serial mom cause kathleen turner was in it.. boy that was the most awkward viewing I ever had with a parent hahah
Avatar 1:41pm
Otis Fodder:

I love Serial Mom. One of my favs next to Polyester.
Avatar 1:41pm
Mr Fab:

Anyway, hallo all. If folks are diggin these sounds like I know they are, they should check out GeorgyGirl's YeYe Girls special from last July for more Gallic grooviness.
Avatar 1:41pm
Ursula1000:

saw John Waters do his xmas show spoke word thing here in NY --so good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm

I think that's the quintessential Ye Ye song. Love it so much.
  1:42pm
spodiodi:

my mom wouldn't even let me watch Three's Company
Avatar 1:42pm
Mr Fab:

I used to only like April march's version, "Chick Habit," but the original has grown on me.
  1:42pm
Martinibomb:

@Ursual he did a Valentines day one here a few years ago that my wife and I really enjoyed. That's the best way to spend valentines with John Waters!
Avatar 1:43pm
Ursula1000:

April's version is pretty ace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm
Rich in Washington:

I think in my mom's case, it was hard for her to get away to see these movies, so she often had to take one or more of us kids in tow, as my dad hated going to movie theaters.
  1:44pm
Martinibomb:

Have any of you read about this Vinyl shortage that's about to hit because of a fire at a lacquer manufacturer?
Avatar 1:45pm
Ursula1000:

yeah pretty crazy
  1:45pm
Martinibomb:

Good thing you got your new album out!
Avatar 1:45pm
Mr Fab:

Yes, I was surprised it was only one of two plants in America?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah. That's sure a drag. A pressing plant's one thing, but lacquer production is pretty vital.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Rich in Washington:

Was also reading that infuriating article about nationwide music distribution and how it's being bungled by one gigantic company. Portland's Music Millennium even gets a quote in it. Sad and stupid.
Avatar 1:47pm
BC Sterrett:

I love the movie scene where Anna is singing this song
Avatar 1:48pm

My pal Dennis just acquired a nearly functional Scopitone Jukebox and he's setting about getting it up and running. When he does, there's going to be a big coming out/premiere party for it. Hopefully soon.

I tried to collect every version of Girls to Watch Music By, but it's a bottomless pit. Never heard this one!
Avatar 1:53pm
Otis Fodder:

I've only seen one working machine here in Montreal, parties a few years back with some great classic vids. Otherwise just caught clips on VHS (soundies too through Something Weird) and online of course, thankfully now we have a good bit online.
  1:54pm
spodiodi:

sounds fun, Rich. love jukeboxes
Avatar 1:54pm
Mr Fab:

Wow, haven't seen "Anna." I did recently watch a fantastic film by/with Serge G that's like an album-length music video. I think Sheena super-fan Linda posted it on the Sheena FB page.
  1:54pm
Martinibomb:

@BC BWhahaha!!! I have totally done the same thing. I think I managed a 4hr set once of just music to watch girls by.
  1:55pm
spodiodi:

and just learned about the Scopitone - very cool. never seen one or even heard of such a thing before
Avatar 1:55pm

CLAUDINE!!! Wait, am i listening to "Friendly Persuasion"?

I did a party once w/ nothing but versions of Spinning Wheel
  1:55pm
spodiodi:

merci
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm
Rich in Washington:

It's exciting, Otis. I'll be sure to keep you all posted. It's gonna be spectacular. It's in great shape, externally. It just needs some minor restoration and fine tuning on the inside. Dennis is a film collector and I think he's either got a line on getting Scopitone formatted reels or already has some.
Avatar 1:56pm

Thanks for the selections selector. Bon voyage on your Pan Am intercontinental jet-set flight to the city of lights.
