Favoriting February 21, 2020: Zines!!
There's a whole LOT of reading with this episode . So much zine talk here that you'll get sick of words like "zinsters". Now that I just used THAT word, I got to hit myself in the head.....damnit! A special appearance by https://ftmelo.podbean.com/

wish I had the sheena zine ready for this episode

About 80% of this show is from two of their "AudioZines" discs.

Mr Fab:

my Raymond Pettibon 'zines are worth a pretty penny now.
Avatar 6:10pm
Don-O:

I'm planning Space Age Ash Tray #3 in time for LA Zinefest. However, I'm currently working on the back cover for my perzine, so I gotta get THAT out of the way first.

God! I was looking at one of those inserts inside of an old SST release and thinking how much money they'd be worth now if I had sent away for those Pettibone zines.

i should go through my zines. I have almost never thrown anything out over the years.

I wish I still had my Negativfanboyland issues (Bob period and revamped Don-O period). So many moves, so many giveway purges to pals.

That's how Don-O and I met. Zines. 25 years ago? 28 years ago? 300 years ago?

only once, my first wife, bless her, had thrown out a large stack of flyers, zines and various ephemera after we had a water heater leak take out the contents of a closet. She was like "They just looked like some kind of photocopied garbage!". She honestly didn't know.

The contents of A Big 10-8 Place which I'd stored because it didn't fit on a record shelf. "Who the hell puts a baggie of grass in the record album?".
Avatar 6:17pm
Otis Fodder:

I wish I still had stuff like Roommate Stories or old issues of Factsheet 5 (especially issues where my stuff was reviewed in). It all went to good homes in various cities I lived in (zines + tapes) but last move to Canada it was everything I could fit into a vehicle, once again.

I have carried around several things though. OG Neg-land 4 SST tapes and my 10-8.. but I don't have the bark anymore.

I did get over to a zine fair in San Fran in 2011 and picked up a good dozen Murder Can Be Fun issues... including the infamous Disneyland issue (that goes well listening to OTE's Piddle Diddle show... that Don-O passed to me years ago, go Don-O!)

I still have a lot of my SST cassettes! I think my whole child rearing years I was strictly cassette and CD until I could take my record gear out of storage when my kids where more teachable.

@Martinibomb: It IS a bit mindblowing that the owner of Reading Frenzy is now a city commissioner. Loved that place.
Avatar 6:22pm
Don-O:

I'm surprised that I still have my zine collection (well, 95% of it that is). Speaking of which, I got to review issues of Say What?! by Rev. Groovy G (I think) for my Zine Hall Of Fame section of my site.

Nice, I haven't seen your Zine Dump area. A lot I don't know/remember... but I do have an almost complete collection of Organs & Bongos from Russell in Seattle and the first Tiki News from John T in Montreal. www.donosdump.org...

I LOVED Dishwasher. Pete's writing encapsulates the antidote to capitalism's efforts to curtail people's freedom and abuse their autonomy.
Avatar 6:31pm

This sort of zine show could a podcast on it's own. Endless room to cover. Is there a show/podcast dedicated to the zine scene of the 80s/90s?
Avatar 6:32pm
Otis Fodder:

Oops short correction, for Tiki News.. was thinking of John T from Montreal who did Mai Tai, another great zine of that caliber.
Avatar 6:34pm
Don-O:

Oh! Organs & Bongos. THAT was a lovely title. I got an incomplete set with the anniversary with 'Best Of's from the early stuff.
